Just binged this show. Pachinko is phenomenal! ✨Beautiful story, told well and w/a great cast! 👏🏽
The drama is good -- loved it. But had to read the book as well - and the book is so good (100% better than drama because it is told in time-sequential order) and the characters are clearer to decipher. Cried so much I was ashamed of myself -- reminded me of the AfroAmerican slavery situation in the US. Definitely a must watch.
Wonderful acting by Min Ha Kim. Fabulous.

Prostitution. That is exactly what the imperial Japan forced Korean girls to do during the colonial period. Around 200,000 Korean girls were forced into sexual slavery/prostitution. Chinese, Dutch, and South East Asian women were also the victims of this horrible sexual slavery.
What's more heartbreaking to me is most of Japanese people nowadays are not even aware that their country invaded other countries.
Right, in their history they were the victim.
After watching TV drama series Pachinko, Recently I finished Pachinko audio book. It got me a lot of thinking, sobbing and empathy. Such an incredible heart moving story.
that weeding scene had me cry like a baby ..the acting was incredible..what a show!! i can not wait for the second season.

This is a beautiful story but I got distracted by that baby's glaring eyes when the camera panned in. 🤣
The intermingling of the past and present in the narrative through the woman lead is similar to that of the then famous Japanese series "Oshen". Watched it when I was small, and watching Pachinko now takes me back to my "Oshen" days 😀

They were called comfort women. One of several atrocities by the Japanese.
Yea, they tricked them! There's a documentary by ASIAN BOSS, they were basically tricked by saying that they were looking for young women to work for wealthy elites as maids, cooks, or in shall shops. And bc the were young teens, they would convince the parents, who were also broke and couldn't feed them, that they had jobs and would be fed well there so they would let them go. But once they arrived, they set them up in a debt model for housing and food so they had to "work off" the debt they incurred. They weren't all vulnerable ppl, but horrid ppl exploited the ppl who were financially vulnerable the most.
It's not correct Korean women were prostitution. Korean women were SEX SLAVED. It certainly was not prostitution. The anchor woman said wrong. Many Korean women demanded for personal apology still who are still alive. It's called comfort women. This cbs anchor woman said it wrong!

I was educated in England. 프레자일 발음도 맞아요. 사전에도 두 개의 발음으로 되어 있어요. 영국에서는 스케쥴도 셰쥴이라고 발음해요.
그게 뭐 그리 중요헙니꺼? 인터뷰어가 100% 알아듣는데... 미국에 나도 1.5세로 와서 반평생 살았는데요 발음, 억양 전혀 중요하지않습니다. 얼마나 의사 표현을 잘하냐, 얼마나 자신감있게 영어를 하냐 못하냐가 중요하지요. 미국은 다민족 국가라서 발음,억양갖고 뭘하는 사람 없습니다. 인종차별 하는 인간들 빼놓구요.
Even I as an a fluent person I am shocked by how good her pronunciation.
