The South San Juan Wilderness is also located in the southeastern end of the San Juan Mountain Range. It was designated as wilderness by Congress in 1980, and it is 158,790 acres in size, and is characterized by steep slopes and wide U-shaped valleys that contain beautiful trout filled streams as well as high peaks and cliffs. Elevations rise as high as 13,300 feet. The wilderness contains thirty-two lakes. The Conejos, San Juan, and Blanco Rivers have their headwaters here. There are close to 180 miles of trails, and some of the most exemplary backpacking in the state of Colorado. The Continental Divide crosses the heart of the Wilderness for 42 miles.
On this episode 2 start at the Duck Lake trailhead and hike 4 miles into the wilderness to solo camp at Duck Lake. There, I see waterfowl, bald eagles, elk and deer. The next day I hike over to Rock Lake where I fly fish for a while and find spawning rainbow trout.

Great video. I watch a lot of backpacking videos on UA-cam. Excellent footage. Good commentary -- I like the intro & wrap ups. I appreciate you talking about finding the trail & campsites. You do not need the music. Let the wildlife & your footage speak for itself. Keep up the good work!

Great video! The south San Juan’s are beautiful. I’ll be heading through there later this year for a backpacking trip and then later in the fall for a back country Elk hunt, so your experiences have been a great recon for me. On you fly casting start with less line and try to keep the rod tip between 10:00 and 2:00 - with a pause to let the weight of the line load up on the rod. You’ll pick it up in no time. Take care!

Thanks for this beautiful vid, nice wildlife and fishing. Surprised to see snow gone already looks so dry out there. Hope it will not be a bad fire year again. Maybe low altitude there ?

Nice video. You saw some great wildlife and still life as well. It's nice to know there are still places in this world where we can go out and be alone with nature.

Good video. Wish I was younger to take advantage of this wilderness like you do. Also wish they would let us crippled old farts use bicycles but that's the way she goes. Keep it up.
