A shame SNK failed to make use of all of the AOF characters and treated them like complete jokes... Some characters like John and Micky were great but in SNK's view, the popular rule and those that weren't popular aren't worth their time. I guess SNK never considered that having underrated fan favorites are just as good as the popular ones.
The issue with Mickey & John is that they're hopelessly generic- just plain guys in regular, drab clothes. They would have to be completely redesigned to make something more out of them. Though they made HWA JAI of all people look cool in KOF, so they could do it if they wanted...

Reworking him into a viable include would be easy enough if SNK had room for an AoF secondary character - KoF secondary characters like Kensou and Maxima are not even announced for KoF XV, with the former being almost guaranteed to sit it out at this point. So what chance does John have?

Because you are not supposed to play as other characters in the story mode. And the bonus stages is only for story mode, which means only for Ryo and Robert.
Clark is mostly about wrestling moves and doesn't have projectile. Now, John 's "flying attack" special move is like a choper's blade, which is also the case for Heidern's special attack. Though one is vertical, the other is horizontal.
