The CRAZIEST CBS BROADCASTING CONTROVERSY of the 1969 NFL Season

- In 1969, CBS changed their mind on which game they were going to show in Hawaii not once, not twice, but three times, switching from Browns/Cardinals to Vikings/49ers to Rams/Lions and then back to Vikings/49ers. Safe to say, chaos ensued

I lived in Hawaii at the time. Public expectations re:programming availability was quite different back then. Up until the mid-1970s, network news broadcasts weren’t show here until about 5:00 am the following day, as tapes were air flown in. Live programming back then was limited, as Hawaii was dependent on Intelsat satellites, making live transmissions too costly to carry on full time. It was not uncommon even for sporting events to be televised here a day later (like the Thanksgiving Day games) or even a week later (like CBS Sports Spectacular). On the local TV guides, the “tape delay” disclaimer was very common.
Helmets on the right show the NFL standings for the Capital//Central/Century and Coastal divisions in 1969
Giants and Saints actually traded divisions from 1968.
Oversight: Note that the Capital & Century (Eastern Conference) aren't on adjacent rows and likewise the Central & Coastal (Western Conference).
The husband would be better off spiking the pizza into the ground.
Or pulling a Walter White and tossing it onto the roof.
Just for that Justin Bieber reference, "WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER!"
Don't forget that 1969 was the last year before the merger of the AFL.and the NFL.
This is very similar to what happened in 1996 in Seattle with the Fox affiliate KCPQ & which Stanley Cup Playoff game they wanted to air in the 12:30 PM PT time slot. I should point out that KCPQ was contractually obligated (along with every other Fox affiliate with the exceptions of the Tampa & Philly markets which showed the Lightning-Flyers series) to show Game 6 of the Boston-Florida series in the 9:30 AM PT time slot. However they could pick whatever Western Conference playoff game they wanted for the 12:30 time slot. Initially KCPQ selected Game 6 of the Vancouver-Colorado series because the Canucks were the de facto NHL team for the PNW as we were years away from the Seattle Kraken becoming a thing. However at the last minute an executive at Fox Sports told KCPQ to show Game 6 of the Toronto-St Louis series instead simply because of the fact that Wayne Gretzky & Brett Hull were playing & Fox wanted maximum ratings. In fact, every single Fox affiliate around the country showed this game screwing over hockey fans in Denver from watching their team play on free TV. For those wondering what happened to the Vancouver-Colorado game, it got aired by ESPN instead of Fox at the last minute as ESPN originally had nothing to show in terms of live sports that evening as the Chicago-Calgary series that they were going to show concluded a few days before. As for how both the St Louis-Toronto & Vancouver-Colorado games turned out, both games were decided by one goal with the Blues beating Toronto 2-1 & Colorado going on the road in a very hostile GM Place (where fans threw beer bottles on the ice after the game in the NHL's version of Bottlegate) beating the Canucks 3-2.
Just to let you know I do like the history you bring to the comments.
I seem to recall that Hawaii received network programming on a one week tape delay at that time as the film had to flown in.
That's a hell of a lot of switches! If I were KGMB's PD, I would've stuck with Rams/Lions.
The player who couldn't make up his mind in 1987 about crossing the picket line can't believe this story.
You just earned a Cognac!
In Hawaii, games start at 7 or 8 am (depending on if it's daylight savings or not). There are a lot of bars and restaurants that are open showing games with breakfast buffet specials.
That was also the year Brett Favre was born. Coincidence?
Your case was in the setup of the NFL divisional alignment of 1969
Wonder what time was Church masses in Hawaii?
Two Bieber references in one sentence 😂
The helmets are arranged by NFL standings per division. Division winners on the left. From top to bottom the Capital, Central, Century, and Coastal divisions.
Were you craving pizza when you made this video?
I’m always craving pizza
It's the arrangement of the NFL divisions as they would have been in 1969.
Maybe there were no satellite "pickup points" available to KGMB on Sep. 21 or 28.
At the risk of litigating the past, the station could have tried to show the Rams and 49ers in alternating weeks against each of the other teams. Granted they couldn’t show every other team, as the Rams and 49ers played each other twice that season, but it would have been a good way to see the other good teams, especially the Browns and Cardinals.
3:32 Well, I'll say this. There are worse Bieber songs to get stuck in your head.
I'm not gonna say the Y word...
Wasn't Three Times A Lady the number-one song 45 years ago this week?
Yes it was, and that’s actually where I got the idea (listening to a playlist on Spotify of the top 40 songs this week in 1978). Great call
These were the divisions in 1967. I remember reading about The NFL Capitol Division were Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington and Saints, The New York Giants switched for the 1968 season. The NFL Coastal Division the Rams, Colts, Falcons, and 49ers. I can't remember if the Central divisions had a different name. But you had the Vikings, Lions, Bears, and Packers in one division and The Browns, Steelers, Cardinals, and Giants in the other division. After the NFL/AFL merger a few teams had to go to the AFC to balance teams to 13 until the 1976 Bucs/Seahawks expansion. Also fun fact in 1976 the Buccaneers were in the AFC West and The Seahawks were in the NFC. The next year they switched only to have the Seahawks go back to the NFC in 2002.
Sunday video
All the division races were wrapped up early, so there was not any interest from that perspective. Also, postseason home field was on a rotation, so no seeding either. Perhaps the biggest late season interest was the long winning streaks by the Rams, 11 straight out of the gate, and the Vikings, 10 straight after a 1 point loss to start. Since the Vikings beat the Rams in week 12, perhaps they had the only thing of interest yet, going for their 12th straight win.
The helmets are the NFL standings for 1969 by division.
December 14, 1969.
Is KGMB still around to this day
Pretty much all of the Big 3 stations are still around
Yes. Same call sign and network affiliation. Note that it was owned at the time by Cecil Heftel who served in the US House of Representatives from the late-1970s to the mid-1980s. One of the more famous media outlets he also owned was Chicago's WLUP-FM 97.9 during the years of Steve Dahl & Garry Meier.
I wonder if these issues went on in the AFL?? Other than the Heidi game in '68, you didnt have these issues with NBC.
The helmets on the right are the 16 team in the nfl with in 1969
Like college freshmen changing majors every semester.
Change of plans
It’s get what you get. And don’t throw a fit. Getting bored with all the broadcasting stuff. How about some actual football. Like the good old days on here.
I sure when the season starts, we’ll see all kinds of dumb decisions and odd (good odd) coincidences videos. Maybe even see news topic series like sullenberger of the week or stones like chuck or something
The NFL nearly as big a deal and wasn't so overexposed back then. There were fewer fans around, and fewer ways to watch a whole game beyond local news coverage and syndicated highlights shows. And people weren't so outraged if they didn't get to see a whole game.
Now, baseball on the other hand...
