No, I still have the XM3s for travel which continue to be great, and AirPod Max for home I found on Amazon perfectly refurbed for under $400. Sony app is really fun though.
I don’t think will bother have xm4 but reach for my bose qC 45 or bose 700 as my daily driver. When wanna jam out to music I use my favourite sounding wireless headphones Sennheiser Momentum 3.

The XM3s were the best I’ve owned for air/train travel. Can’t wait to try these now. And many, many congratulations on the recent addition to Team Ellis. 👍🏻
Hilarious: music lowers when talking to yourself. Really made me laugh - you are so matter of fact honest. Again, and I say this to you every time I comment, you are just soooo comfortable to listen to. Thanks Mark.
The Review I was waiting for, thank you Mark. I’m a classical and Jazz musical listener so sound ideal for me. Hopefully purchasing soon. My 65th birthday looms in July ( hint hint family!!). Thanks again for a brilliant review.
Just got mine through Amazon. The one thing I think (besides the excellent noise cancelling) that sets the XM5’s apart from all other headphones is the outstanding comfort. I was going to buy the Air Pod Max until I tried them on and couldn’t believe how terribly uncomfortable they were. Despite the exceptional sound of the AP Max, I didn’t like the burlap like ear cup fabric, the excessive weight and wonky headband. The MX5’s blow them away and are significantly less expensive. Way to go Sony!
@@advocado7373What do you mean? I've not seen Air Pods Max cheaper than $470 or so, whereas XM5s are $400, and I'm pretty sure I've seen them a few bucks off a time or two. Plus, that Sony XM5s have an actual case, as well as support for a 3.5MM headphone cord. I'm headphone shopping at the moment and while I am interested in the AirPods Max, well, I think I'd rather wait untill they revise them ... though I'll probably just stick with my current AirPods 3rd gen, my Beats Studio 3s, and whichever Sony set I decide on since I use those for gaming. My AirPods are my everyday, and my Beats for travel. I'd hate to travel with the AirPods Max, I think.
the non-folding thing actually seems pretty helpful! one thing that annoys me with the xm3's i have is when it starts raining, so having to fold it for the case takes quite a while and you basically need to stop what you're doing, if you don't need to fold it to get it in the case that's way preferable
Well I had a choice between the XM4s and XM5s and chose the XM4s - The noise cancelling on both headphones is great but as I travel quite a bit I decided the XM4s would be more convenient and space saving than the XM5s. It's whatever works for you because they're both excellent headphones and I'm very very pleased with my XM4s.
I bought the XM3 model about 4-5 years ago and they have been simply awesome. The only technology I own that actually works as it should. Thanks for the vid as I am now looking to upgrade. I do prefer the look of the previous models.
Worth pointing out that the "talk detect" feature was also in the XM4's and it sounds like they havn't really changed anything, because it was annoying as hell on those, too.
The auto optimizer makes the XM5 almost annoying enough to throw at the wall. If you stand completely still, then you'll never notice how annoying it is, but if you walk down the sidewalk and a loud car drives down the street, they'll auto adjust the ANC to cancel more noise, and then they'll try to go back to the less aggressive ANC, but they'll overshoot and go to the point of nearly being off. Unless they can allow users to turn off the auto optimized ANC, these are not any better than the XM3's imo. When the ANC isn't searching for what their AI thinks is the right amount of noise cancelling, they are truly the best headphone I've ever touched. But not being able to lock the ANC in 100% mode is a major downfall. It's not something that you can turn off, as of firmware 1.1.1. Right now you're stuck with their under equipped AI.
I’m about to return my pair for this exact reason, but I don’t know if keep them and maybe in the near future an update to turn off the automatic adjustment will be released. I feel like I wasted $400, all I want is solid ANC cancelling, and these are not
@@draeonacs3160 Yea, it's so frustrating. WTF Sony?.. If you haven't already, log into the Sony App and do their customer feedback questionnaire regarding the XM5's. The more people that hammer them with the truth, the more we can push them to release a firmware update that allows a 100% ANC lock. It's such an easy thing to fix too..
I literally just bought a pair of WH-1000XM4’s on Monday (12-4-23) at Best Buy for $230 (US dollars) and then thanks to UA-cam channel GYMCADDY, I found out that the WH-1000 XM5’s were on sale at Target for $250 until Thursday, so I IMMEDIATELY went on the Target app and bought them (apparently the in store price isn’t the same because they were not labeled on sale when I had gone in there Monday when I was looking at headphones) and then drove the 40 mins back to Best Buy to return the XM4’s. I am now debating whether or not to switch back to the XM4’s because of this ANC BS!! I don’t feel like these are as strong ANC wise as all these reviews are saying they are, unless I am missing something or doing something wrong. This so called “adaptive sound control” is ANNOYING AF! As someone who was sucked into the Apple ecosystem 21 years ago (can’t believe it’s been that long) I can say, that is something they would do. It’s just like with my AirPod Pro 2’s (or any Apple headphones/earbuds for that matter) how they don’t have an adjustable EQ….they basically say “this is how we think music (or whatever else you listen to) should sound and we’re so good at it, we don’t need you going and changing anything about it.” It’s an ARROGANT THING FOR EITHER COMPANY TO DO (Sony with the adaptive sound control BS and Apple with the lack of EQ adjustments). The only thing that’s a “positive” (if you can call it that) is, IT CAN BE FIXED VIA A SOFTWARE UPDATE (COUGH COUGH 😉 😉 SONY)
Still on XM3 now. The noise cancellation is good enough for me, just the mic not so good. Probably won’t buy a new one in several years to come. BTW if you feel like to maximise the battery lifespan like I do, charge it with USB2 or something like that. No more than 5W.
The review I’ve been waiting for! Watched a few others from folks that got the headphones early on - wasn’t impressed (lookin at you Linus tech) Always know this channel brings the best
happy to hear no more creaking ... Had the XM4/3s and they had unbearable creaking in the earcup that was like nails on a chalkboard with the slightest movement! Great review as always.
The creaking was the main reason I returned my XM4's, they were perfect but the creaking drove me nuts. At this point the XM5 seems to be a no brainer of a choice.
Been using XM3 for over 2 months and I absolutely love them! The XM5 must be one heck of the headphones! Would love to see a comparison against Airpods Max. Love the content!
I been using XM3 for past 4 years and love them. I can tell you XM5 are even better than XM3 for sound and comfort. I did a blind buy for XM5. I love XM5 true to original sound quality.
I have tried both from the shop and the earcup size is definitely noticeable! Xm5 feels a lot more comfortable but due to my ears being a little big, it still gets a little uncomfortable if worn for extended periods of time (around 6-8 hours)
I almost bought the XM5 from Amazon until I read some reviews that said there were a lot of glitches and wasn’t as comfortable etc. so I bought the XM4’s instead.
Mark as always great material describing a headphones from consumer perspective! I have to admit that i was going to swap my XM4s for XM5s but after watching it I decided to wait a while cause maybe it does not make sense. I listen Tidal via LDAC so using max potential of Sony's headphones. I also think that comparing them to Air Pods does not make sense cause on iPhone Air's will always be better :). I was using my XM4 on iPhone 13 Pro and was disappointed, those headphones needs LDAC! :) On Samsung Galaxy, listening them is different story. Anyway waiting on compare video between those and XM4s. All the best and thanks for review !
@@PixelSplash999 Yes Christopher I do agree, however LDAC is as close to hi-res as possible if we will take all current codecs. 😉 Let's forget about hires but if you will compare how xm4 sound with aac and LDAC, there is huge difference specially in bass management department.
I have the MX3s and I have never experienced the noise issue although one of the hinges has become problem. After 2 years there is not even a scratch. The material is very durable.
I often feel discomfort on my XM3, mainly my left aswell. It seems these pads squash down further and I think I might have more discomfort. I can see the pads are larger/wider but it does not seem enough.
I have my mdr-xb650bt for more than 5 years (still no battery issues what so ever) and it started to feel uncomfortable on my ears before I noticed that the pads were open from the middle. What I did was making myself some pads from old socks (it works but it doesn't cut some of the surrounding sounds as it used to with its original pads) as I don't really have money. You might need to check your ear pads as it's how I found my discomfort. I now ha the mx5 but because my previous sony headphones broke or the battery has problems, but because I need to block sounds from drill and other construction noises as I live in a house in renovation.
@@MarkEllisReviews By way of comparison the XM4 looks too fat. It would fit in a backpack next to two apples or an 800 page pulpy romance novel. Not my style.
I've heard that folding hinges have more chance to break over time, not necessarily with the Sonys, but with other headphones, like the Beats Studio 3s I picked up this spring. Also, I do have a pair of Sony headphones, the WHH-910N, I've had 3 years and loved other than the driver squishing my ears/ear fatigue, and someone dropped them wrong and that folding hinge did break. They still work but ... I'm replacement shopping. I told an audiophile friend of mine who has all sorts of stuff, going back to decades-old headphones and equipment, about the Sony XM series about a year ago when the 5s were brand-new. He picked up the 4s for no particular reason other than that might have been all they had at the store he was in, and he loves them! He said the thing with the 4s is in his view they don't color the music in an obvious way like some other headphones do, like Bose. It sounds like the XM5s are similar, if not more ... uncolored? He said he liked how the XM4s do the higher notes with just a bit of roll-off, which kind of helps when listening to hissy old recordings and the like. They're also only $280 at the moment, rather than $350, so I'm debating snapping them up. I WAS drooling over the XM5s, but ... for that price, I'd be stupid not to get the 4s, right?
so glad that sony fixed this issue of XM4s (8:11), but i've seen that someone was compalining about sound quality, saying that XM5s are worse even than soundcore q35...
Love these Sony headphones. Can someone please tell me why when changing between different audio sources, the volume defaults to high volume??? l'm listening to say some music at a reasonable volume level, then change to a different source, the volume goes to high.…??? Very annoying, I wished I could understand why.!!!!
Hey, can someone inform if the anc is now 100% lockable. Or if the AI which controls it inproved. This is my main question now regarding if I should buy the new xm5 or buy the xm4, baring in mind my main preocupation is the auto AI ANC "problem" from reviews online.
I have a question regarding the "speak to chat" - is that a feature you can switch off? It would be quite annoying if you couldn't, especially if you use noise cancelling so you don't need to hear people speaking around you.
@@고구마호박-q1s Comparing to default Sony Xm5 EQ, AirPods Max sound much better. But you can customize eq on Sony and then it will sound pretty decent, sometimes even more interesting than AirPods max. But comfort on the Sony xm5 is much better than on AirPods, and even Xm4. Much less clamping force and weight. But a little bit annoying headband
Got the APM for 350€, the XM5 for 250€ and the XM4 for 180€ and as an apple user it’s hard to decide between the APM and the XM5 I have to say! The XM4 just don’t fit to me in terms of build quality, that’s user preference.
Where are you shopping, cause I NEED THESE KIND OF DEALS haha!! I’m across the pond in the states anyways so it probably wouldn’t work for me anyways. The fact you got the AirPod Max’s for 350€ is impressive. I actually just bought the XM4’s on Monday for $230 and then thanks to another UA-camr, I found out the XM5’s were on sale until Thursday at Target (a chain store here in America) for $250 which I think translates to about 232€ according to google lmao. So I immediately bought the XM5’s yesterday (Tuesday) and then drove back to Best Buy and returned the XM4’s immediately after picking up the XM5’s haha. Now I’m considering going back to the XM4’s though because of this STUPID adaptive ANC BULL*HIT!! I honestly don’t know WTF Sony was thinking with this crap. I can’t speak for anyone except myself but, I want FULL ANC IN ANY AND ALL CONDITIONS!! It shouldn’t be left up to some AI program or whatever they’re calling it, to decide how much ANC I “need”!! At a regular retail price of $400 WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DECIDE HOW MUCH ANC WE WANT FOR OURSELVES!!! C’MON SONY, WORK ON YOUR GAME!!!
Why is everyone saying the xm5 noise canceling is so good and even better I just got mine yesterday and was so disappointed when I turned them on and there was absolutely no noise canceling I even returned them because I thought I got a bad pair but even after I had the same problem I literally spent almost 500$ and I'm so disappointed i dont know if I just got 2 bad pairs but I'm going to stick to xm4
Okay … after hearing your list of tunes you use to test headphones, I took note of them to create an Apple Music playlist. But the first tune you mentioned has me scratching my head. Unfinished Sympathy appears to be a band with many songs. Which one do you listen to? Or is Unfinished Sympathy a tune that is not appearing in my search? Oh yeah, and about your initial XM5 Review. It was really insightful and very helpful. I wonder why you throw so much shade on touch controls 😂. I love that feature. Thanks for taking the time to create the best review of seen. I’m a Bose 700 user, and I like them. My son has the XM4s, and he loves them. I’m hesitant to buy Bluetooth headphones. Based on some cagey statements from Apple engineers and a couple of other tidbits I’ve heard outisde of Apple, I kinda suspect we’re within a year of a different wireless audio protocol to support higher quality sound.
That’s crazy and I was complaining how here in Greece the xm5 is 420€ and the xm4 is currently on sale for 279€. I’ll pick up the xm4 if it’s even further discounted cause I’m cheap 😅
My Xm5 arriving today. I bought them because I am a lunatic. I have several headphones, including the XM4, and while most of them have much good about them, none still get it all done with high marks. Amazing really when you think where we are with technology and something so simple as headphones. But, my Apple iPhone can be very frustrating at times and you know the marketing is designed to make you want the next one. Anyway, we will see how I feel about this new headphone. I sense that you were not blown away. Maybe there is not much left for these things to accomplish, except for weather resistance. Where is that feature?
Not blown away, no. Impressed, but you’ve hit the nail on the head, really. Weather resistance would be nice, but it’s not a feature I personally yearn for. Look forward to hearing how you get on with your XM5s.
Just hooked them up. Particularly comfortable. Sound and quiet very good but not noticeably better than 4 to these old ears. Calls much better and that is important to me, so that alone worth the change. Otherwise your comments right on.
I got my XM5s a few days ago. Here’s my thoughts so far (semi audiophile whose owned quite a few different headphones). Pros - Excellent noise cancelling - Great sound quality - Look great (I have them in grey/silver, apparently the black version attracts fingerprints over time) - EQ in app - Touch controls are great - Good mic quality for calls and suppresses background noises for the person listening Cons - Uncomfortable after an hour’s use which is largely disappointing.. hopefully this’ll get better - Can’t workout in them, they get wet with sweat & feel hot around my ears - Feel heavier on the head than other headphones - I wish I could hear my own voice a little clearer when I spoke with them on my head, it’s a little muffled sounding. Conclusion: Not worth the £379 retail price. May be returning them & sticking with my Bose Quiet Comfort II, which is disappointing considering the NC & sound quality on these XM5s being top notch but, comfort is very important.
A tip. There are headphone covers on Amazon which are made of a material which doesn’t seem to get anywhere near as sweaty as wearing XM5’s or 4’s with just the vinyl or leatherish material. These look like black fabric donut covers, with one hole bigger on one side than the other. You place one over the headphone speaker and the hole lets the sound through, while the material sits on the vinyl. They are very cheap and you get two pairs. I think they are great! Remember to place the small hole over the headphone so the larger hole can let in the music. Enjoy!
I got XM4s in Jan at Doha airport for duty free. £213 back then so you should be right, particularly when people will sell* theirs to buy these, so secondhand in excellent condition will be a scoop. PS they are amazing.
Thanks for a great review, been waiting for you to get hold of these, as have you, I’m sure. Respect for not watching other reviews, that must of been hard. I’m still waiting for for newer apple based cans. Might get the SkullCandy Cruser Evos for the craic, in the interim. What’s you opinion?
Hi Mark, I'm a recent subscriber to your channel and I like your reviews. My friend has the WH-1000XM4's & I like the feature that when you temp remove the headphones the music stops until you replace them. Does the WH-1000XM5's have this feature. Thanks & keep up the good work.
Great review, but I'd like to see how much rigmarole is involved if you regularly switch sources from phone to tablet to TV to laptop. This is by far the biggest weakness of the XM3s, and the XM4s only made a token attempt at improving the situation. It seems like Sony are hoping to convince you to buy a separate set of headphones for each device!
I’m a bit torn. They sound great, but ambient mode not really being any better than the XM4 is a missed opportunity for Sony, particularly with all the work from home types using these more for calls than in the past. If Sony really wants to, they might be able to be correct this with a firmware update. Sony doesn’t tend to be revolutionary in software upgrades to existing devices though. The AirPods Pro (I don’t have the Max) and NC 700 tend to be very good on calls in how well you can hear yourself, the Sonys continue to be weak and muffled, which takes some getting used to. I agree with other commenters with ANC being “weak” - versus my NC 700, the Bose nearly completely wipe out sound from a TV a room away, but the XM5 clearly let through at least the voices. They seem to do well against things ANC traditionally does well against - more constant noise like lawnmowers and, presumably when I fly next, airplane engine noise. But this does make me worry about whether they’ll reduce the annoyance of crying babies for instance. Since these are less compact, I’m more likely to continue to travel with my XM4s, but I’ll need to do more side to side comparisons of ANC “strength”, which will be the deciding factor.
I know these are not sweat proof, but I’m looking for a pair of over ear headphones to lift in the gym in, do u recommend these or have a pair in reccomendations?
@@MarkEllisReviews I am enjoying them. I love the design I was concerned about the 30mm driver compared to the 40mm in the mark 4. These do sound very good.
I purchased the XM5 and already had the XM4 and honestly not worth the upgrade . Spent about 3-4 hours last night comparing both and yes did notice a bit better NC on XM5 but sound is almost the same.
What's your top three headphones for sound quality? am very picky with sound quality and am nervous whether these will be worth the extra money. I am from Australia and want some quality headphones for music and study. At the end of the dayI really don't need wireless.
"Have you been waiting for these?" Nah, I only got my XM4s six months ago and although I loved how much the design had changed, when I saw that these cannot be folded my reaction was FFS, Sony! I reckon I will wait until these have been around for a while, if I see a good deal on them then I will upgrade.
Hello! I just sold my Bose 700s and bought the XM5s. Question, since I am new to the Sony atmosphere (I've owned the QC Bose family up to the 700s since 2014). The volume slider is becoming a little annoying for me. The sensitive to up the volume or lower it is super low. With my 700s, I used to slide it up to max volume with one-two upward swipes; it takes me like 10 swiped upward just to increase the volume. Is there a way to fix this? The app is extremely confusing, where is the level for NC at? thanks!
@@MarkEllisReviews they've just come down in price here in Amazon Spain, from 449€ to 355€ (I guess they're more expensive here to begin with because of the required 3 years warranty). At that price, even if they're more expensive than the xm4, I'm considering trying them. Thanks for your great insight into products!
i just got mine, coming from only airpods pro for over a year, i can't get over the mids and highs being so much less, i really wanna like them but its unfortunate bc other than that they're good
I bought the XM5 but already returned them. In my opinion it’s a good headphone but not extremely better than the XM4. The reason I returned them is comfort. After a hour wearing them the headband causes pain on the top of my head. I’ve not experienced this with the XM4 and AirPods Max.
my experience with XM3 was horrible. The lack of sweat protection may easily ruin it if worn outside in hot weather. The moisture causes horrble sound effects.
Wow great impression! But what about sound without using nc? I think it's better with nc off... And what about sound with wired connection (with headphone ON, of course)?
These look like a solid upgrade but I am still more than happy with my XM4s so will stick with them. I don't think the XM5s are worth the extra money - especially as you can get the XM4s for £229 on eBay brand new!
Me too. I usually hang around it on my neck for a while whenever im not using it. Or need to talk to someone for a bit longer. Also the fold design sets them apart from the other competition
i also love xm4 foldable, i heard in another review only difference xm4 vs xm5 was mic for calls that improved nin xm5. But bow this video says noise cancelation better also.. ok good to hear, but i prefer foldable and general look of xm4. my backpack front pocket is big enough/perfect for foldable xm4.. would not be able to carry xm5 on my backpack when needed.
Hoped that these had better materials but they creak already out of the box My xm4s’ , after 1 year have become close to unusable. Every time I move my head they just creak and seem like they’ll break. These are no different AirPods Max still are on a whole other level in terms of build quality (and also sound being way richer)
@@MarkEllisReviews Not at all dull but jaw dropping. You should have watched other reviewers, who showed the XM5 practically elimates all background noise of the mic during a phone call. Can you test and confirm that?

Wow, thank you!
That Linus review is an abomination
happy to hear no more creaking ... Had the XM4/3s and they had unbearable creaking
in the earcup that was like nails on a chalkboard with the slightest movement! Great review as always.
The creaking was the main reason I returned my XM4's, they were perfect but the creaking drove me nuts. At this point the XM5 seems to be a no brainer of a choice.
The design of these is gorgeous
Been using XM3 for over 2 months and I absolutely love them! The XM5 must be one heck of the headphones! Would love to see a comparison against Airpods Max. Love the content!
Cheers, Alek! Stay tuned!
I been using XM3 for past 4 years and love them. I can tell you XM5 are even better than XM3 for sound and comfort. I did a blind buy for XM5. I love XM5 true to original sound quality.
Wow, The ear cups looks so much wider than that of XM4’s,
is there a lot of difference between those two in terms of comfort?
I have tried both from the shop and the earcup size is definitely noticeable! Xm5 feels a lot more comfortable but due to my ears being a little big, it still gets a little uncomfortable if worn for extended periods of time (around 6-8 hours)
Yay someone who uses Massive Attack in their sound tests. I love Mezzanine!
There is only £50 pound between the mx4 and the xm5 still don’t know which one to buy for the price goes back up
Big question: I have the XM4s and love them...will I really notice that much difference if I was to buy the XM5s ?
Depends what aspect you're referring to, really! I've got a comparison on the way this month - stay tuned!
Xm5s are great. Better anc. Much lower background noise while anc activated. And sound is at least 20% better. Bass didn't git worse
Shame about ambient mode but sounds like a decent purchase!!
Thanks!
Just ordered. Seen a lot of reviews, but yours is the first that mentions that there are no creaks.
That really surprises me!
The XM5 case is wider and flatter but is it bigger in volume than XM4? I think a flatter case is easier to pack in a backpack with books and a laptop.
I agree, Paul. I have no idea why it’s collapsible.
@@MarkEllisReviews By way of comparison the XM4 looks too fat. It would fit in a backpack next to two apples or an 800 page pulpy romance novel. Not my style.
@MarkEllisReviews that helps save space when it's in your bag empty!
Already pre-ordered it. Australian released date is not till july 1 though
Would like to see a comparison with the Apple AirPods Max. The AirPods are falling in price and in Australia are not far off from the XM5s
It’s in the works 😉
I’ve been using XM3s for years and they still amazing. New one probably blows my mind! Can’t wait.
Come back and let us know!
@@breadyegg Still testing XM5s but NC is already insane. Huge improvement over XM3 (they are still damn good)
omg which mic do you use to record your videos? It's stupendous!
I really like them. I did have the XM4s but I had to return them because of the popping. There's been no issue with the 5s.
so glad that sony fixed this issue of XM4s (8:11), but i've seen that someone was compalining about sound quality, saying that XM5s are worse even than soundcore q35...
Love these Sony headphones. Can someone please tell me why when changing between different audio sources, the volume defaults to high volume???
l'm listening to say some music at a
reasonable volume level, then change to a different source, the volume goes to high.…???
Very annoying, I wished I could
understand why.!!!!
If you compare between 'WH-1000XM5' and 'AirPods Max', which one do you think is better in sound quality?
AirPods Max are better. 🙂
You’ll have to wait and see ;)
@@mattpergolski4759 Do you heard both of them? What is the difference between them?
@@고구마호박-q1s Comparing to default Sony Xm5 EQ, AirPods Max sound much better. But you can customize eq on Sony and then it will sound pretty decent, sometimes even more interesting than AirPods max.
But comfort on the Sony xm5 is much better than on AirPods, and even Xm4. Much less clamping force and weight. But a little bit annoying headband
@@peterkravets Thank you for your comment =)
Ordered a pair hoping that there will eventually be aftermarket earpads like with the XM4s
good review... but with the current xm4's prices, i will probably get this when the xm6 comes out 😅😂
Got the APM for 350€, the XM5 for 250€ and the XM4 for 180€ and as an apple user it’s hard to decide between the APM and the XM5 I have to say!
Search ‘Massive Attack’ ;) And thanks for the kind words about the review!
I just checked out the prices here in Finland: XM5 costs whopping 499 EUR and XM4 only 249 EUR. I wonder if the XM5 are really worth double the price.
Nope.
That’s crazy and I was complaining how here in Greece the xm5 is 420€ and the xm4 is currently on sale for 279€. I’ll pick up the xm4 if it’s even further discounted cause I’m cheap 😅
I got xm4 about a week be4 xm5 released a bit gutted but considering the price am more than happy with xm4 .
In Germany 419 € and xm4 289 €
I have both :)
great Review as always Mark. Love my XM4s not sure if I will splash ouit on these just yet
i am in the same boat. might just keep XM4s
Just pre orderd one , compared to the bose qc 35ii do you think I'll be blown away?
You'll be very, very impressed.
Now noticing connection problems. Will keep you advised.
@@Bruceneuman We're still waiting, did you disconnect yourself permanently? 😂
I got my XM5s a few days ago. Here’s my thoughts so far (semi audiophile whose owned quite a few different headphones).
Pros
- Excellent noise cancelling
- Great sound quality
- Look great (I have them in grey/silver, apparently the black version attracts fingerprints over time)
- EQ in app
- Touch controls are great
- Good mic quality for calls and suppresses background noises for the person listening
Cons
- Uncomfortable after an hour’s use which is largely disappointing.. hopefully this’ll get better
- Can’t workout in them, they get wet with sweat & feel hot around my ears
- Feel heavier on the head than other headphones
- I wish I could hear my own voice a little clearer when I spoke with them on my head, it’s a little muffled sounding.
Enjoy!
You have a good ear based on your track choices and your feedback. I wish you'd review some more high end headphones like Audeze LCD X or something...
One day I will - promise!
I’ve been waiting for these so I can buy the XM4s on a hopefully good discount.
That's a solid strategy!
The XM4’s are brilliant.
I got XM4s in Jan at Doha airport for duty free. £213 back then so you should be right, particularly when people will sell* theirs to buy these, so secondhand in excellent condition will be a scoop. PS they are amazing.
I got the XM4s on Amazon uk flash sale for about 165£. That price will be back again.
Haha - thanks for holding on! As for waiting on Apple…. I just wouldn’t. If you fancy those SkullCandy cans - get ‘em!

It seems like Sony are hoping to convince you to buy a separate set of headphones for each device!
rigma balls
Super review, very informative.
Thanks!
when will we start seeing competition, bose 800 coming?
I don’t even care about this product, I just want to listen to Mark’s voice 👂
Thanks for doing the review! Can you please consider doing a comparison between the the Sony WH-1000MX5 and the Bose QC45?
Thank yoU!
How can the WH-1000XM5 feel so much lighter, if they weight 250 g compared to 254 g (WH-1000XM4)? That's something I don't get.
Maybe the reason for the foldable empty case is to fit better in the airplane compartment in front of your seat.
They released yesterday and are sold out everywhere around me
I’m a bit torn.
Since these are less compact, I’m more likely to continue to travel with my XM4s, but I’ll need to do more side to side comparisons of ANC “strength”, which will be the deciding factor.
great in-depth review! :)
Thank you! Really enjoyed making this one?
I know these are not sweat proof, but I’m looking for a pair of over ear headphones to lift in the gym in, do u recommend these or have a pair in reccomendations?
I have just got mine.
Enjoying them?
@@MarkEllisReviews I am enjoying them. I love the design I was concerned about the 30mm driver compared to the 40mm in the mark 4. These do sound very good.
But was that the 2012 remix/remaster of Unfinished Sympathy? 🤔🧐 lol
15$ earbuds will do 😄
Spotify playlist with all those tracks???
"Have you been waiting for these?"
Nah, I only got my XM4s six months ago and although I loved how much the design had changed, when I saw that these cannot be folded my reaction was FFS, Sony!
I reckon I will wait until these have been around for a while, if I see a good deal on them then I will upgrade.
Xm5 vs airpods max ? Which one would you recommended ?
Wait and see.
The app is extremely confusing, where is the level for NC at?
thanks!
U press the button on the headphones.... BOOM noise cancelling :) Also if you swipe up, then hold, the headphone volume will increase quicker.
Do they get more warm than AirPods max ? Or similar ?
Similar.
Which are More louder XM4 Or XM5?
Hi there, if you already own the xm4, would you upgrade to the xm5 or is it not worth it? Thank you.
How does it sound wired to a lossless source?
Are they 200€ better than the xm4? Right now you can get the xm4 for around 250€...
Nope, they’re not that much better.

Great video, I will wait for the XM4's price to drop, lol
Good plan.
Bose qc45 for £100 from cex grade A or should I save up for these I got a voucher from cex so I dunno
I can't use transparent mode on Apple products because of how loud it is, and there is no way to control it.
I bought the XM5 but already returned them. In my opinion it’s a good headphone but not extremely better than the XM4. The reason I returned them is comfort. After a hour wearing them the headband causes pain on the top of my head. I’ve not experienced this with the XM4 and AirPods Max.
Yea, same here. The headband is too narrow and digs into my head too.
I thought you’d throw a hissy fit at the new larger case Mark. You waxed so lyrically about the XM4 one. 😂
The XM5 case is great!
Decided to go and get a pair of xm5 getting them for £180 as I got loads of vouchers at cex
Question, do you know what the best sound quality headphones are? For $400 or less? It does have to have noise cancellation but needs to be wireless.
Try the shure aonic 50, not sure if it has noise canceling though.
my experience with XM3 was horrible. The lack of sweat protection may easily ruin it if worn outside in hot weather. The moisture causes horrble sound effects.
Damn was hoping for an audio sample recording of the headphone mics
Wow great impression!
But what about sound without using nc? I think it's better with nc off...
And what about sound with wired connection (with headphone ON, of course)?
It’s better with NC on. What is the point of using NC headphones with nc turned off? That’s retarded
These look like a solid upgrade but I am still more than happy with my XM4s so will stick with them. I don't think the XM5s are worth the extra money - especially as you can get the XM4s for £229 on eBay brand new!
Wrong.
I personally prefer the xm4 shape/design. I won’t change to the new ones. Nevertheless, thank you for testing.
Xm4 I like the look better.
Hoped that these had better materials but they creak already out of the box
My xm4s’ , after 1 year have become close to unusable. Every time I move my head they just creak and seem like they’ll break. These are no different
AirPods Max still are on a whole other level in terms of build quality (and also sound being way richer)
That's really odd, mate - mine are completely silent!
You missed out on testing the microphone noise cancelling. It is a significant highlight of the XM5.
Sounds like a pretty dull test I’m afraid, mate.
@@MarkEllisReviews Not at all dull but jaw dropping. You should have watched other reviewers, who showed the XM5 practically elimates all background noise of the mic during a phone call. Can you test and confirm that?
@@azuremain sound like others have already tested and confirmed it’s the case, from what you’re saying 😊 I’m glad they have, but it isn’t really what I do - as noted in the video, my test is “is this clear enough for a decent conversation”. Is the cup more or less spacious than the XM4?
I don't need a lot of the extra stuff, I just want the best sounding wireless headphones with a nice, comfortable cup and good battery life. (within this approximate price bracket)
