    It was all so easy to do for the late , great Mr Garth Hudson. He had the talent , skill and abilities to play 3 different melodies simultaneously , without getting mixed up ...WOW!!!! He added 17 chord progressions to The Band's repertoire for God sakes ! The most advanced and brilliant musician of the Rock era .... incomparable !

      Yes, I was thinking of them too during the discussion of American rock bands. Probably the closest to the British bands mentioned.

    I sometimes wondered if Garth was the steady influence in The Band that kept things on the rails. It always appeared that three-fifths of the band were self-destructive and that Robbie as the creative 'leader' couldn't control them. That seemed to come over in The Last Waltz interviews, in which Garth hardly featured. Perhaps it was in the editing but that was always my impression. How sad that the boys are all gone now.

    Garth Hudson actually joined the Hawks in late 1961! He had previously played mostly Saxophone in bands locally in Ontario, don’t forget about that skill he had too. The BAND were a unique combo in many ways at the time, two Keyboards and one guitar usually it is reversed . The only other band at the time , 60’s like that I can think of is Procol Harum . But the BAND had 3 lead singers , sometimes 4 if Levon let Robbie sing! Anyway RIP GARTH.

    1st Match of 6 nations this year, the Stade De France sang the Marseille... (The French National Anthem) with zero accompaniment. Most powerful anthem ever.

    • @PaIaeoCIive1684
      @PaIaeoCIive1684 День тому +1

      That's a top anthem for sure. Only one to stir you more -- especially if you listen to it with the English translation -- is the mighty Russian anthem. The versions by the children's choir and massed army choir on YT are epic!
      P.S. The UK national anthem sucks both in terms of tune and lyrics. It's a dirge, and even if you're a royalist the words are terrible and dated. New anthem urgently required (though not one for modern (woke) audiences, please).

    The heyday of Rock music was 1967-79. During that period the best bands from the States were (in my view) The Doors, The Band, The Eagles, Steely Dan and Lynyrd Skynyrd. British groups like The Stones and The Who have become legendary simply by carrying on for so long. Let's not overlook the great (Small) Faces either!

    I can match Howard Jones. Was taken to IoW and can remember most of it. But on the long long car ride north I was puzzled by my car mates moaning about the Doors performance. This puzzled me because I couldn't remember them playing. Exhaustion wiped them out of my memory.

      I've heard that Doors set on CD and it's not as bad as people claim, featuring two epics; The End and When the Music's Over plus solid versions of Light My Fire and Break on Through.. among others. The fans were suffering from a cool wind and the lacklustre stage lighting, bathing the band in a single red light. Jim hardly moved throughout, apparently. It's certainly a lot better than an LA gig CD from around the same time where Jim is insufferable and got triggered by audience comments, ruining the performance by getting stroppy.

I was there to see Taste, Family, Joni, The Who, Free, Jethro Tull and Jimi. All of whom I can recall vividly. Weird thing is I remember the Who set, which began about 2am I think, but not the Doors who preceded them. Perhaps it was the extra volume woke me up!

The Hendrix and Who sets were good, I recall (saw the film) and Joni, just with her and guitar mostly, was OK too. You were so lucky to grow up in a golden age for music. Mine, late 70's to early 80's, was OK but the scene peaked in the early 70s. Cool!

    Could you not say that THE BEATLES set that template for a Rock band as a whole to be marketed and presented as THE ACT? Before that it was always a solo Star , Elvis, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis etc…with a backing combo. George Martin actually saw that he was going to keep The Beatles as they were with 3 lead singers, Lennon or McCartney dominating but all 4 getting the spotlight. Absolutely the best Bands were British…modern era from 90’s on doesn’t really count.

    About the Americans/British bands segment: your thoughts on The Replacements, specially from Let it Be onwards? The thing The Replacemnets didn't obtain in any shape or form was the grandiosity of those British acts. And they sabotage any chance of that, probably out of fear of not being able to compete on that level. But, besides that, they were up there

    • @stevehoran5595

      I would say absolutely not. Listen to Up On Cripple Creek, for example. It rolls, man, it rolls. The other day I saw a snippet of an interview with Levon Helm where he said he cut the tempo in half so he could give the backbeat some wallop, some funk. I'm not into flinging around categories because I've witnessed too many stupid arguments about who was the first metal band. I've heard the Band described as Americana or proto-Americana or whatever, FWIW. To me, the Band are like the Band, they're pretty unique.
      Who invented "rock"? I guess Deep Purple are as good a guess as any as they were a hard rock band who were influenced more by European classical than by blues music, without going prog. Though Ritchie Blackmore could play bluesy stuff.
