  • Stephen Street made his name working with The Smiths in the 1980s, and has become one of the most prominent and sought-after producers in Britain, having collaborated with Blur, The Kaiser Chiefs and Babyshambles.
In this extensive interview Street discusses his time with the Smiths, the personalities and approaches of the band's members, his work on their second album 'Meat is Murder' through the singles 'Sheila Take A Bow' and 'Girlfriend in a Coma' to their final landmark LP 'Strangeways Here We Come'.
He also discusses his work with Morrissey after the band had split, as both songwriter and producer, on the album 'Viva Hate' and the singles 'Suedehead', 'Everyday is Like Sunday' and 'The Last of The International Playboys'.

this series was tremendously insightful and I thank you from the bottom of my void and empty heart. I produce my own music and the knowledge of how a smiths single came about, from johnny marr instrumental to morrissey lyric to stephen street's production technique -- VERY IMPORTANT. i've had a block in my writing process from guitar to ableton but now I realize stephen was truly INSTRUMENTAL *wink wink* in the smiths' work, especially with their later sound no doubt. One wonders why he isn't considered the 5th smith? Morrissey made a huge mistake in moving away from him. Much appreciated again. Will be looking much more in depth into stephen's work.
Signed, the world's biggest smiths fan
