I'm the guy who made the most prominent current models for both Helryx' and Artakha's canonized mask designs, and I can definitely understand your sentiment. To me there's just something so creatively fulfilling about creating custom pieces of designs we never got or even redesigning pieces I never liked growing up. In a way it's like I'm able to express exactly how I might view the canon or story of bionicle myself without being bound to what's available to use, and in ways that just wouldn't be possible otherwise. To me that just kinda fits the whole idea of the bionicle legend in a way. Everyone has their own personal canon and that's how it should be. P.S. when takanuva meets Toa Helryx it specifically mentions how he's never seen her mask before, which would be ironic if it were shaped as a Pakari...
I know that well, I was just using it for example because it's what the submission wore. I actually almost mentioned it myself, but decided not to bother. When you consider characters like Darkness and Ravager whose faces look like that on the models, but aren't necessarily supposed to look like that in the story, it still doesn't really matter to me.
Don't worry man, your Bionicle reviews are some of the best in the net. You could have never done those but instead you blessed us with that content. It's thanks to you that I could really appreciate the pros of G2, which I were still gonna buy, every single set, but I can say that I remember those two years of sets quite fondly now :D
The creator of the Artahka moc that won the contest actually posted an updated set of instructions for the legs as he didn't originally take into account that the people that wanted to build the moc might've not had sturdy sockets to build it- so he reinforced the leg design to make sure all is good. The creator of the Helryx model however keeps saying that it's "user error" and that the moc has no flaws as far as durability is concerned.
Honestly the whole "spoken word" aspect of the Bionicle community is part of what makes it so compelling to me. It truly is its own mythology and has dozens of myths and legends spanning hundreds of thousands of years. So the fact that most people don't have all the answers and can build it up in their own minds builds on that aspect.
HE'S BACK. I remember watching you, in the time before time. Your Bionicle reviews remain to this day some of the best I have ever seen, they kept me entertained for a long time.
It’s a pity I didn’t discover your channel 7 years ago. I really appreciate the awesome way you pose figures and work with lighting, creating actual scenes from the story. It’s a shame G2 hasn’t lived to this day making it impossible for you to review new sets. Even if you never return to bionicle again I still wish you awesome times and best of luck!
I hope that for the 100 year or whatever thing lego is polling on ideas right now ends up being bionicle because it’s iconic and great. G2 seemed to be more of a hero factory reboot over what bionicle was to me. Something about it seemed like an uncanny valley situation to me which I can’t explain.
I was searching for your channel recently and just noticed the name change. Man its been so long, I remember you before puberty man. Those old old videos have a special spot in my heart and has helped me become who I am. This channel showed me my love for all things engineering and construction and since I'm graduating this year, I'm going to join a carpenters union, then go back to college eventually to get my engineering degree. I just wanna say thanks man. Thanks for being there for me when my parents weren't.
i mean drinks and bottlecaps quite normal compared to magnetic balls that you roll onto magnetic cards so that they transform into dragons and monsters
Ayyy, good to see you doing some bonkle stuff. Hoping to maybe see some reviews down the line! Loved all of the ones you previously did. On another note, I hope Bionicle wins the contest. I'd 100% get the D2C that'd come out of it, whether it's a modest and cute diorama, or a huge 300$ GSR.
I’m aware this is a Bionicle video. However, the resurgence of this channel’s activity, the B-Daman spiritual successor in Bottleman, and me getting a job again, I decided to get Assault Dragren off eBay! I bought him earlier today and he shipped out same day! Can’t wait to get him.
In regards to the canon contests, the way I approach them is that I don't take the models necessarily as canon, but rather the art. The art for both Helryx and Artakha so far have made both characters look way better (ie improved the proportions/stature of) than the models in my opinion, so if or when I ever get around to building them, I'll be able to take some liberties with the way that they're both built (whether that be improving the building techniques used, altering the proportions to better match the art, etc). Having the art take priority over the model in terms of canonicity is enough of a middleground, I think, to have a wiki page but still encourage creativity in each person's own interpretation. (As for the masks, I personally have no qualms about 3D printing since it's just plastic at the end of the day, however I don't yet have access to a high quality 3D printer that can visually match the consistency of "real" Lego, nor the correct color of paint needed, but hopefully as tech improves/cheapens/gets more widespread, this won't be as much of an issue) Really relaxing video dude! Felt nice to put this on in the background and watch the build, hope you're doing well c:
Nice video, spot on for the most part regarding the happenings/ canon contests and such. I myself regard the relatively new contests as a slight bit odd, TTV despite being one of the largest fan sites doesn't necessary have authority over the entire canon as doesn't Farshtey or Faber. Universe building in a narrative and design sense is usually a collaborate venture not singly helmed by one individual, or ironically acknowledged by the actual IP owner anymore save for little easter eggs. Also apparently Greg got fired/ let go recently so honestly just have fun and choose what you want to be cannon yourself and make an alternate universe or something. I'm gonna go print some things.
I get that greg enjoys making more bionicle canon, but the longer you refuse to let bionicle die, the more you risk letting it live long enough to become the villian instead of dying a hero. Most stuff in this life is beautiful because its temporary.
I have an idea that you can do with this Makuta set aside from building Takutanuva: attach the shadow hand and wings from the Ultimate Duma combo model it to make Makuta’s appearance from the second movie.
Man, your childhood's traumatic. If I were in your shoes, I would have chosen against combiner builds because I'm an idiot and I wouldn't want to break my figures apart. Well, I never got too much of BIONICLE in my childhood, anyway.
Honestly it would be nice to talk more about the bionicle media that was on film or tv. You shortly mentioned the netflix show and it would be cool to go more into that, but honestly even talking about the movies and how things changed between them would be interesting
TTV getting Greg to “canonize” fanmade character designs is the Bionicle equivalent to DidYouKnowGaming getting Nob Ogasawara to name scrapped Pokémon designs. Yeah, it’s a cute what-if idea, butit shouldn’t be taken as gospel
If I were honest to myself, I would have asked to look for other stuff to be interested in. Gunpla takes more time than usual model kits, but on another note, you could have continued unboxings/reviews on Shinkocchou Seihou Figuarts instead. Finally, LBX made a unique revival by releasing episodes of the original series on UA-cam because of a mecha musume series based on LBX called LBX Girls: Soukou Musume. Problem on LBX Girls is that it's aggressively obscure for no localization (The original game did not sell well in America because the 3DS is a dying console), but the entire concept of it is so interesting. I mean, in Soukou Musume, the main female cast of the first two games (Amy, Jessica, Asuka, not sure if Laura will come in soon) are now playable, but follow a completely different cast using the original cast's tier 1 LBX (Achilles, Emperor, Harlequin, Hunter, Kunoichi), traveling Japan to stop a revived Mizel. And we get new characters every week.
Finally, for content, making content between channels every other week is fine. One week main channel, next week sub-channel. As this is your sub-channel, find something to get your hands on at random for a change, besides sticking to Bottleman and LEGO. I think it's time you pick up an LBX and a CCM, cause the line came back for a short moment.
I think I got an idea. Talk about what you wish to continue, what you wish to cut, and what you want to get into in terms of reviews in the Takanuva Let's Build. Also, open up LBX Let's Builds; there are those remastered LBXs to try out and compare to older kits. And if you still wish to continue BIONICLE is all up to you. I don't say I hate it, it's just Greg canonizing random stuff at this point in a series whose direction has been severed is already crushing our souls. I just hope you don't stop reviewing Figuarts Kamen Rider, especially Shinkocchou. Shinkocchou Kiva came home after years, and I can't be any more grateful.
Um... If BIONICLE wins the second vote, why would LEGO _not_ make a BIONICLE set? What would their justification be? "Oh hey, you know that vote we asked you to participate in? _It didn't matter._ We put BIONICLE as an option, by our own decision, and it won twice, but we're actually doing Space because screw you." Why? Why would they?
For the same reason they denied the first IDEAS project. "We know devoted AFOLs want it, but does it work as a mainstream product?" If they conclude the answer is no, they won't consider it viable.
What if they take the top 3 themes and incorporate them as a multiple build set? The set is going to be $200 US after all. We could get Tahu teaming up with some medieval knights to fight pirates.
I honestly think that with all of the effort that you put in to the 2016 reviews that you've done, it would be a waste to not at least upload what you have made, even if you don't do the rest. Granted, that's just my opinion, and I'll accept whatever you do.
You should try and find (and get into) a new and ongoing line of toys/models for review, something like gunpla, which is strong and not going anywhere. It's tough to continue squeezing the content out of something like bionicle at this point, there's just nothing left to do with it.
