It blows me away with your creativity and ability. There are so many technically talented drummers out there that don't know how to write creatively. You are what everyone should strive to be. Can't wait to hear more from you
What you're doing is making me realize how bad I need to get to work on keeping that freaking left foot going separate and nailing the right foot and hands. Cuz you're incredible
This is Eden 2.0. Am I the only one who enjoys the original from "One" better? The amazing solo at 5:56 with the hi-hat double tap that NO ONE covers correctly. Anyone know of a proper solo cover?
@@Skeletal33no not weak at all, just a little different, I love both, the song is just heart crushing no matter eden or eden 2.0, both are great songs, and I love the fact it's a different vocalist, because elliot gives that song a somewhat different character than dan does and that's why I listen to both versions
Jamie Postones...you are amazing, no better than that incredible. Very talented drummer and overall musician. I am sure he has had some jazz influences in his playing from his hi-hat foot independence but still great song and drum parts :)
I understand the point your making about the bass and drums becoming less "important" so to speak in newer bands of any genre. In my opinion, TesseracT has increased the importance of the rhythm section by giving them the freedom of creating a groove for the music. They do keep time but it isn't the constant same-old time rhythm they actually make the music progress forward rather than just keep it simple. I'm not into much of the "djent metal" either but TesseracT is an excption in my case.
I've been really stuck on the album version of this song this week. Something about the intense syncopation mixed with the epic melody that I can't get out of my head. I'd say the song is confusing, but not the hardest to play if you have decent independence. I tried to half-learn the guitar part of it, and it really helped me learn the time signatures used.
That stack 1:53 is sublime and the Zildjian heritage is unmistakable in that ride 2:06 - 2:26. I urge everyone to learn to stamp out 1/4 notes with their left foot whenever they're not hitting the hi-hat. Does wonders for time keeping and keeps the pulse going when playing polyrhythmic stuff. It also allows you to stick offbeat "choke" accents with your left hand every so often.
I understand that is your opinion but you have to realize that he is using each limb independently which is the hardest thing someone could attain on drums. Even though he is following the guitar/bass lines, he is still complimenting them musically and that is what makes TesseracT drum parts very difficult to decipher and mimic. His overall talent is amazing and you can't change and/or disprove because that is a fact.
One of his main Chinas is a Holy China. The one at 4:22 is a china stack of some sort. However, I can't see the two cymbals that make it up to tell the sizes.
His only real competition is Joey Baca of The Contortionist, but I'd still personally say that Jay is the best. Jay and Joey outshine Matt Garstka/Matt Halpern/Thomas Haake in sheer versatility alone although all of those guys are still incredible drummers, the best of our time.
Mike Johnston has a pretty nifty Meinl crash stack set up if you've ever heard it. Like I said man there are so many possibilities. Just go to a store and try stuff out.
I'm sure you could find your own combination in you went to a big music store with a big stock of cymbals. Not that I see an issue in using what he does but you might surprise yourself with an even better sound. Try things out!
absolutely amazing and talented drummer. this guys writing when it comes to drums are honestly spectacular and he's def my biggest inspiration... he's thousands of miles better than those over rated drummers like george kollias and all those others who fancy themselves on fucking blast beats. technicality > speed
djent is totally a genre You're a fucking imbecile. George Kollias plays what's best for his genre of music. It would sound stupid to play what Jay here is playing to a death metal song that calls fro blast beats. Use your fucking brain.
honestly, if you practise trying to keep it going enough, it just kinda goes on autopilot when you're playing, and when you do it enough, you'll find that it just kinda sounds empty without it ha.
Good try there jay.. but I still feel I could do better. Haha. Ill have to come see you guys again. . Been awhile since I seen you at your studios. Daryl
I play drums aswell, and i can approve of this being hard to play. but the difficulty of drum patterns are in my book not important. i'm not much into this "djent-metal" or whatever it is called either. but i do feel that most newer metal bands, have made both the drums and bass sort of "slaves" to the rythm, and to me that is not the sole purpose of the rythm section of a band. he's a very skille drummer, no doubt about that, but he doesn't use it in way that inspires me.. at all actually
Not sure why everyone is commenting on the left foot. He is just keeping time with it...not sure the song needs it either, but great drummer of course.
75ShadowShooter it does make it more challenging to play a piece with your left foot going on, especially with already challenging songs such as eden. I think its better than him just blast beating tbh, because at least some limb independence is needed (i am fully aware of the song bleed)
dystopic panopticon on its own, it’s simple. But paired with the right foot, especially whilst there are bass drum hits that are in quite unusual places and there are quite a few doubles etc, it makes it a lot more difficult to keep perfect timing with the hats. Really difficult if I’m honest, I’ve always struggled with that sort of stuff.
mmmmh.. i don't like the fact that the drums are basicly following the guitar the whole way through... not the role of the drummer, nor the bass in my perspective..
Dude, what's the point of music if the instruments don't marry each other? Drums and bass aren't SLAVES to the rhythm, they fucking define it! Haven't you heard of bands/musicians that make drum tracks first and map the rhythm around that? The bass kicks and snare and just about everything inbetween accent the guitars, or you could look at it the other way round with the guitars simply playing to the drummer's groove...you cant split the two, what the fuck is a drummer "supposed" to do iyo?
Not aiming to inspire, just to do what I enjoy and I enjoy this immensely.
It blows me away with your creativity and ability. There are so many technically talented drummers out there that don't know how to write creatively. You are what everyone should strive to be. Can't wait to hear more from you
Dont mind me just going to leave a reply on an 8 year old comment. Awesome video btw!
What a chad
What you're doing is making me realize how bad I need to get to work on keeping that freaking left foot going separate and nailing the right foot and hands. Cuz you're incredible
Yup! Still blows my mind…
That left foot on the hats is madness
2023!!!! Still here baby!!!!
The piano in the background near the end is so simple yet add so much to the song
This is Eden 2.0. Am I the only one who enjoys the original from "One" better? The amazing solo at 5:56 with the hi-hat double tap that NO ONE covers correctly. Anyone know of a proper solo cover?
So do I mate.
Definitely. 2.0 is weak
@@Skeletal33no not weak at all, just a little different, I love both, the song is just heart crushing no matter eden or eden 2.0, both are great songs, and I love the fact it's a different vocalist, because elliot gives that song a somewhat different character than dan does and that's why I listen to both versions

Even though this isn't what I normally listen to, Tesseract, you are so amazingly talented and make phenomenal music. Keep it up!
Ingenious writing. Flawless execution.
Killer job Jay!
I Agree with Jay...... Loving those beats man.....
Love how Jay uses cymbals to add depth and groove to these tunes. Him and Tomas really know where to nail that odd-places splash.
It is a stack china set-up. It is two different Sabian cymbals.
17" AAX China
10" O-Zone Splash Cymbal
Jesus. That was some damn good work. Props bro.
My favorite drummer so far
freaking love it dude... wow is all I can say to this video. Would love to make a song with you if you have the time. wow again, good work
Even though your not aiming to inspire, I want to play your style of music it's just amazing and great drum tracks for TesseracT :)
awesome vid and an even more awesome track.
Dat hi-hat.

I've actually played around with different stacks for years. The Meinl Filter Chinas work well stacked.
You have really great cymbals
That stack 1:53 is sublime and the Zildjian heritage is unmistakable in that ride 2:06 - 2:26. I urge everyone to learn to stamp out 1/4 notes with their left foot whenever they're not hitting the hi-hat. Does wonders for time keeping and keeps the pulse going when playing polyrhythmic stuff. his left foot is just out of this world. i wouldnt want to compete with that beast!
Amazing dude!!!
yup
Fantastic
speechless man!
One of his main Chinas is a Holy China. The one at 4:22 is a china stack of some sort. However, I can't see the two cymbals that make it up to tell the sizes.
freaking awesome dude!
that left foot. i have no words.
well yeah hes keeping time with the hi hat! ^^ check my cover of eden, not as good as the man himself of course
did you mean that left hand?!?!!?!?
that too!!
Jesus christ fr tho
just straight notes, what‘s so complicated about it?
That left foot independence =O one more to the list "to practise"
Every time I see this video... just :O
And again... Best Djent drummer.
So what about Matt Garstka?
And Thomas Haake
His only real competition is Joey Baca of The Contortionist, but I'd still personally say that Jay is the best. Jay and Joey outshine Matt Garstka/Matt Halpern/Thomas Haake in sheer versatility alone although all of those guys are still incredible drummers, the best of our time.
THIS IS GODLY!
SABIAN RULES! amazing cymbals sound!
thats great!
Mike Johnston has a pretty nifty Meinl crash stack set up if you've ever heard it. Like I said man there are so many possibilities. Just go to a store and try stuff out.
AWESOME !
awesome man :)
Talk about independent limbs... I could never do that hihat stomping.
Awesome.
I'm sure you could find your own combination in you went to a big music store with a big stock of cymbals. Not that I see an issue in using what he does but you might surprise yourself with an even better sound. Try things out!
His independence is incredible. How!?!
Yeah, no shit
That was beyond confusing to look at. Wow.
Respect.
It's a 17" AAX China and a 10" O-zone splash from Sabian.
absolutely amazing and talented drummer. this guys writing when it comes to drums are honestly spectacular and he's def my biggest inspiration... he's thousands of miles better than those over rated drummers like george kollias and all those others who fancy themselves on fucking blast beats.

Use your fucking brain.
djent is totally a genre Try Matt Halpern of Periphery. Fucking phenomenal polyrhythms drummer.
Its amazing how human beings can manage this split brained feat of total limb independence at all. wow
honestly, if you practise trying to keep it going enough, it just kinda goes on autopilot when you're playing, and when you do it enough, you'll find that it just kinda sounds empty without it ha.
DO THE WHOLE ALBUM. I'd buy that dvd
The danny Carey of nowadays prog. Beautiful and elegant time keeping
i completely disagree, music is not defined in such boundaries, this is an excellent play through
WHATEVS TO ALLL THE NAYSAYERS THIS DUDE IS FREAKIN AWESOME!!!!!!!
Anyone know what kind of china he plays on at 4:22? Such a beautiful sound :)
Sorry for the stupid question, but does anybody know how to place the splash above the crash, like he does?
+BOBO AKULU
Do a Google search for 'Cymbal Stacker'.
That's just amazing...O.O Least said...O.O
You're towards on Mike Portnoy's steps! Keep walking!
0:38 love that hi-hat
I can't figure out the time signature. This rocks
what kind of drumming does inspire you?
Drums and bass ARE the rhythm.
Whats the stack on the right?
wicked!
Good try there jay.. but I still feel I could do better. Haha. Ill have to come see you guys again. . Been awhile since I seen you at your studios.
Daryl
Maybe we listened to him too much... i also remember his voice over this track! lol
It looks like theres a rocktagon on top of the right crash. Like stacked. Im not talking about the splash
Dont forget the third leg for the hit-hat tempo
What kind of pedals are those?!?
Looks like Trick pro 1V bigfoots. I have just recently bought the dominators from trick, absolute monster pedals!
man, 1:52 grooves so hard
I play drums aswell, and i can approve of this being hard to play. but the difficulty of drum patterns are in my book not important. i'm not much into this "djent-metal" or whatever it is called either. but i do feel that most newer metal bands, have made both the drums and bass sort of "slaves" to the rythm, and to me that is not the sole purpose of the rythm section of a band. he's a very skille drummer, no doubt about that, but he doesn't use it in way that inspires me.. at all actually
1:53 is pretty sick. Glad there no vox :D
Its weird ... i feel like i can still hear Dan's vocals...
I like the fact that the vocals are very much integral but at the same time it's not tightly coupled either.
fucking awesome!
*mind blow*
Not sure why everyone is commenting on the left foot. He is just keeping time with it...not sure the song needs it either, but great drummer of course.

Fucking sweet
they are called the frustrated ones. :DDD
i like the constant high hat. that was a freaking yummy video.
wonderful ! very hard to play
good drummer !
the mirror in the background didn't help one bit
What is the staaaaaack
Those heel toe technics
Dat bass
Мать его, это очень круто... у музыканта походу 4 полушария в мозге.
if there was such thing as a drumming octopus, jay would beat it in a drum off.
Now that I know that, I'm gonna rip it off!
For one second I thought his right hand on the bottom-left video was hitting the snare drum on the main video xD
Forgetting Dan's vocals is just The Impossible
Check out my cover of the full version of Eden! Not as good as the man himself of course.
I miss the groovy part in the beginning
it does but its not
Who: The whole touring act of periphery and Lance Bass?
Why: Jealousy?
His lack of fantasy is shining through...
It's a playthrough of your own song, as in not a cover because you wrote it...
I'd say he likes playing triples with his feet :D
mindfucked
"I DON'T LIKE THE GENRE OF THE MUSIC THIS DRUMMER IS PLAYING IT BUT FOR SOME REASON I'M LISTENING TO IT BECAUSE LOGIC". Shut up.
mmmmh.. i don't like the fact that the drums are basicly following the guitar the whole way through... not the role of the drummer, nor the bass in my perspective..
What the f*ck is "Playthough" ?
Obviously nickleback can afford the time to make youtube accounts and troll....
Justin Bieber fans
