I’ve never served, but I actually had the unique opportunity to walk aboard the USS Nimitz while docked at the NAS in Coronado, CA back in 2004 (I was 17 at the time). I was out there with a church group rebuilding homes burned in wildfires the year prior. The pastor happened to know a high-ranking CO stationed in San Diego at the time; I believe a Rear Admiral (Lower Half), and so he was able to get us all a special guided tour of the carrier. What an unbelievably impressive ship! I’ll never forget it.
Btw, that’s definitely a terrible to thing to hear. I can’t even begin to imagine watching a guy meet his fate first-hand like that. That would truly be a very haunting experience. And your bunkmate, that’s another terrible tragedy. I assume he was a just a normal, young guy who was otherwise healthy and fit. Sad.

My brother was on the Kennedy, saw a guy get sucked into a jet intake,,it spit him out in pieces no bigger than a fingernail. A ship was tying up to the pier ahead of us one day and a guy got his foot caught in a bight in a mooring line and he got pulled through an 8 inch closed chock before someone could get a fire axe to cut the line. He was alive and screaming the entire time. His right leg folded back against his side and his whole body went through the chock, leaving his insides and most of his skin laying on the flight deck. Seagulls were swooping in and eating everything. There was nothing anyone could do. Pretty fucking horrible.

Because the line is so long, you lay it down and then turn it around to run it along side itself untill it’s all laid out. If you google “mooring line faked out” you’ll see the loops ➰ that form on either end. These are referred to as bytes

It's early in the morning around 3:00 AM. They're launching an EA6 aircraft on a catapult and one of the aircraft handlers steps directly in front of the port side (left) engine intake. He is immediately "ingested" by the port side engine. His clothing gets snagged on something inside the intake (probably a pitot tube). His cranial (flight deck helmet) comes off his head and F.O.D.s the engine. This abrupt power loss to the engine and the fact that he is snagged on a pitot tube saves his life... He suffers a broken collarbone and a blown eardrum. I joined the Navy right as desert storm was kicking off. Ended up a Yellow shirt at Air Ops T-line and Aircrew on the UC12B TurboProp.. This was the first safety flick we were shown. Message Received. I've launched my fair share of these jets and the intake is just above your head and not much bigger than a man. You can feel the draft from the intake from about 5 to 10 feet away at idle. When there's water on the ground you can see little vortices that look like tiny tornadoes wandering around like they're looking for something. This is one of the aircraft that has the nickname "Man Eater" for a reason. The A-7 Corsair is another one. Better keep your head on a swivel.

Air Force here. Fully fueled up B-52's have their wings flex very low (hence the wing tip landing gear). When loaded like that, the engine nacelles are only about 2 feet off the tarmac. Air crew did a start up and I saw one of those funnels you mentioned form and fully ingest a 10' radius puddle under the plane in about 30 seconds. Wish we had cell phones to film with back in the day because at that point in my life it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen first hand. Side note, with empty wing tanks you'd barely reach the wing tip standing on your toes with your arm straight up. Those wings can flex a lot.

as someone else said (also I know you posted this a year ago)
"They're launching an EA6 aircraft on a catapult and one of the aircraft handlers steps directly in front of the port side (left) engine intake. He is immediately "ingested" by the port side engine. His clothing gets snagged on something inside the intake (probably a pitot tube). His cranial (flight deck helmet) comes off his head and F.O.D.s the engine. This abrupt power loss to the engine and the fact that he is snagged on a pitot tube saves his life..." (by johnb9825)

Too many silly comments going on as to why he survived. Bottom line is that in front of the first rotating stage of the fan of the J-52 engine is the stator. That is what saved him. True his cranial came off as well as his flashlight and fodded out the engine giving way to sparks out the exhaust but he did not hang up on anything.
