If you haven't watched it yet, you should watch their live show from 2001 live from Central Park on UA-cam. These girls were still looking good, and sounding great.
The Go-Go's were an American all girl rock band formed in 1978. They had a lot of great hits such as "We Got The Beat", "Vacation", "Head Over Heels", "Turn To You" etc.
They started as a punk band without knowing how to play instruments or write songs. They became the first all female band who played their own instruments and wrote their own songs to have a number one album. Their debut album was number one for 6 weeks. It's an amazing album. They are real trail blazers for women.
I saw them play in 1984. I was 11 years old & it was my 1st ever concert. My mom had to take me to the show. I’ve listened to a lot of great music between then & now, but the period between 1981 and 1985 was so damn good.
Their debut album Beauty and the Beat hit the top of the album charts, maybe even #1. Still one of my favorite albums of 1981. They started out as punk then moderated their sound. Got hot while they were opening act for The Police.
"Head over heels" is my favorite song by them. When they came on the scene, I remember someone making the comment that Belinda was rocking the "Campbells Soup Kid" look. Which makes sense only for those of us of a certain age :) IIRC, Jane played Joan of Arc in "Bill and Ted's excellent advanture"
This was co-written with Terry Hall who released his own rather radically different verion, that is worth listening to. The Go-Go's made this video for about $200 and were hoping to be arrested so it would look interesting in the video. This why they jump into the fountain at the end (they weren't arrested unfortunately!)
Go go's "Vacation" Lead singer Belinda Carlisle also has a great solo career. My favorite songs of her solo career are "Mad about you" and "Circle in the sand" ❤💜
As someone who grew up with the 80's music, I loved the Go Gos. They have quite a few songs. Vacation may have been their highest song (I'm not sure). If you play them, I will come!!!
The Go-Gos were a very underrated band, IMO. They hold the particular distinction of being the first and only all-female band to write their own material and play their own instruments to have a #1 album on the Billboard charts. They were recently inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame, too.
Great song, this was a HUGE hit in the new wave/alternative dance clubs, always packed the floor. Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely need to play Vacation, We Got the Beat and Head Over Heels.
If I remember correctly (and forgive me if I'm wrong here, but this song is more than 40 years old lol), Jane Weidlan was dating Terry Hall of the British band Fun Boy Three at the time and this song was a reaction to the rumors swirling in the British press. I saw them live in '84 and they were amazing. Great musicians, all of them. Especially Gina Schock on drums!
Oh, super close CheryItwin2012. Jane Weidlan and Terry Hall were together, but he was married at the time. When his wife found out about the affair, Terry sent the song lyric's to Jane. And she created the music to go with it. So I grew up thinking it was about like kids in school gossiping about each other. Turns out to be adults gossiping about an affair. When I found this out, it blew my mind.
The Go-Gos sometimes get mixed up with the Bangles, (and Bananarama), but that because they are 80s girl bands, not because they sound the same. The Go-Gos were going for full pop energy in 1981 and 1982. They were a perfect fusion of new wave and surf pop and California girl chic. They hid all the darkness behind the scenes and pushed the clean good girl image. "We Got the Beat" changed pop music forever with its Joan Jett anthem riff.
A perfect pop song. The Go Gos had plenty of 'em! Have you checked out Joe Jackson yet? Close your eyes and pick anything from "Look Sharp" for some more power pop new wave rock and roll with monstrous playing and killer hooks. One of the all time great debut albums!
Any MTV viewer remembers this so well from the 80's....was an instant hit and got alot of both air (tv) and radio play. Fun, catchy, memorable, popular, happy are all words I'd use to describe their music, especially this tune. They aren't my favorite band from that era, but I LOVE this song, and have it on my playlists 💕 Also, the part of the song you said didn't need to be included is called a bridge. Most songs have it, and it's the part most folks, especially if not musically inclined, can't remember the words to. 99% of songs follow the structural pattern of verse, verse, chorus, bridge, verse or chorus, then chorus to end (most simplistically).
Oh jeez! This throws me back to my childhood in SoCal, cruising to the beach in convertibles, listening to this. And we all looked like that, too (roughly). Nice memories when I hear this.
I would argue that the Bangles were bigger, they had 8 top 40 hits vs Go Gos had 5 top 40. Both bands reunited in later years with some degree of success. Both are worthy of listening to.
But the GoGos predated, the Bangles bye four years or so, and also had the biggest number one album which you know other female rock band has done. But I like both.
Of the two all-female rock bands the GoGos consisted of five members just like the Beach boys and had that same California beach sound and the Bangles which consisted of four members just like the Beatles had that same psychedelic sound.
From the late 60's to the late nineties musicians just played music. Meaning their was no thought to what genre to classify themselves. That's why they were so good. They never said let's make a metal album, etc. They never pigeonholed themselves. Music companies classfified them. The Bee Gees never set out to make disco music. They just made good music. It was the music companies that said it was disco. So when you hear Powwer Pop,Punk Pop, it's music companoes calling them that not the bands.
Every time i hear this still I immediately start jumping. Vcation wasa big hiot too ! Belinda Carlisle also later did a solo song called "Heaven Is A Place Called Earth" that is song is included in their concerts these days. By the Way The Go Gos is a reference to "Go Go Dancers" from the "Mod period of the 1960s who did background dancing on TV or in Dance Clubs in mini skirts and white boots.
Yeah, I wanted to be a Go Go when I grew up. But really, check out "We've Got the Beat," "Vacation," "Turn to You," "Head Over Heals," and "Get up and Go!" Part of any good 80's soundtrack.
Saw them open for the Police back in the early 80's. we used to come up with alternative perverted lyrics to the current songs played on the radio or Mtv at the time. can you imagine where we went with this tune?
Besides lead singer Belinda Carlisle having 6 solo Top 40 hits, Jane Weidlin (the girl that sang the little solo part you liked in the car) had a great solo Top 10 hit called "Rush Hour".
I saw them at Pine Knob in Michigan back in 1980, I believe, and Belinda’s monitors weren’t working (before ear pieces) so she couldn’t hear herself and was off key. She was visibly upset, and I felt so bad for her.
Terry Hall (Fun Boy Three) wrote this when he was 21 with Jane Wiedlin (Go-Gos). I also love Fun Boy Three's version ua-cam.com/video/QhVhK-VVeXo/v-deo.html
Seen them live in Cleveland. They played with The Rolling Stones! Almost got crushed in the doorway a week or so after 11 people were crushed at a Who concert in Cincinnati! People can be ignorant.
React to their songs We Got The Beat, Vacation, Head Over Heels and Turn To You. And react to Belinda Carlisle's, the lead singer who went solo, Mad About You, I Get Weak, Heaven Is A Place On Earth, Circle In The Sand and Leave A Light On For Me. And react to Jayne Wiedlin's, the girl who sang the bridge of this song, Rush Hour please.
Total fun, music of this era into the 80's was just fun 😊 Salvo I have a request, I don't think you' ve covered Dire Straits, one of my favorite bands from '77 into 80's but one song on particular I am addicted to Skateaway, I think you' LL like. Please cover it
And, besides all of the fun and games and music, how can they not be cool, cruising around in a '60 Buick LeSabre with the top down? They were a lot of fun, though many of us didn't take them particularly seriously at the time. New-wave pop is what I would call it...not punk. For a female punk singer/performer, I'd look more toward Patti Smith. Oh, and if you're going to explore punk, regardless of gender, I'd seriously recommend looking up The New York Dolls (I think they actually called themselves Dolls of New York, but it got changed in common reference), and an early band out of Detroit called MC5.
One of my best friends was nuts about them. This was a guy who had a gift for meeting popular bands. He was just way too cool to be my friend. 😏 But the one meeting where he WASN'T cool was when he met the Go-Gos. To Charlotte Caffey: "Oh my god--I'm so in love with you." Smooth, Tim. Personally, I preferred Gina Schock. To me, their best track is Get Up and Go.
Lead vocalist Belinda Carlisle went on to have a very successful solo career. One of her biggest hits is "Heaven is a Place in Earth".
If you haven't watched it yet, you should watch their live show from 2001 live from Central Park on UA-cam. These girls were still looking good, and sounding great.

Belinda is absolutely adorable!

The Go-Go’s were such an awesome 80’s vibe.
Jane Weidlin, the one who sang the bridge, was also in the movie Clue. She played the singing telegram girl.
yes! and shes so effin adorable!
She’s adorable and super talented!!! Didn’t she write this song? I think the writing is so good.
Recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Gina Schock the drummer kicks a**! You need to hear We Got the Beat next.
"Head Over Heels" is my favourite Go-Go's song
Awesome '60 Buick Convertible!
Haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
Their debut album Beauty and the Beat hit the top of the album charts, maybe even #1. Still one of my favorite albums of 1981. They started out as punk then moderated their sound. Got hot while they were opening act for The Police.
The record label wanted them to slow the tempo on their songs to make them more radio friendly, and that was the right move.
"Head over heels" is my favorite song by them. When they came on the scene, I remember someone making the comment that Belinda was rocking the "Campbells Soup Kid" look. Which makes sense only for those of us of a certain age :)
IIRC, Jane played Joan of Arc in "Bill and Ted's excellent advanture"
Check out "Head Over Heels" 👏
Reminds me of the fun days of MTV. 💕
Yes. When it was music.
We Got The Beat, Vacation, Head Over Heels, all so, so fun!
Love it. Especially the transition out of the break back into “Can you hear them?!”
This was co-written with Terry Hall who released his own rather radically different verion, that is worth listening to. The Go-Go's made this video for about $200 and were hoping to be arrested so it would look interesting in the video. This why they jump into the fountain at the end (they weren't arrested unfortunately!)
Add "We Got The Beat", "Vacation", and "Head Over Heels" to your list of Go-Go's songs to listen to!!!
An all-female band that wrote all their own songs. This song reminds me of my childhood watching early MTV (when it was awesome).
I remember this song and the Pointer Sisters' song He's So Shy playing on HBO before MTV went on air in August of 81.
Go go's "Vacation"
Lead singer Belinda Carlisle also has a great solo career. My favorite songs of her solo career are "Mad about you" and "Circle in the sand" ❤💜
As someone who grew up with the 80's music, I loved the Go Gos. They have quite a few songs. Vacation may have been their highest song (I'm not sure). If you play them, I will come!!!
If someone doesn't like this song....something is seriously wrong with them !!! LOVE LOVE LOVE ❤ THIS SONG!!!
The Go-Go's are amazing. Love the songs "This Town", "The Whole World Lost Its Head", "Lust To Love" and "Fading Fast".
Belinda’s voice is phenomenal. U should Ck out some of her solo. Heaven is a place on earth or Mad about you
If I remember correctly (and forgive me if I'm wrong here, but this song is more than 40 years old lol), Jane Weidlan was dating Terry Hall of the British band Fun Boy Three at the time and this song was a reaction to the rumors swirling in the British press. The Gogos and The Bangles were and still are awesome. They're Power pop, as you said. They can rock.
Bananarama was not a girl band just a girl group like the Spice Girls and dozens and dozens of others before and since.
A perfect pop song. The Go Gos had plenty of 'em! Have you checked out Joe Jackson yet? Close your eyes and pick anything from "Look Sharp" for some more power pop new wave rock and roll with monstrous playing and killer hooks. One of the all time great debut albums!
I loved the Fun Boy Three version of this x
Any MTV viewer remembers this so well from the 80's....was an instant hit and got alot of both air (tv) and radio play. Of those girl bands at that time I liked the Bangles more but the Go-Go's were very fun.
Same. Bangles were my group! ❤
Excellent….and more Ronstadt please …🙂
There's a good docunentary, talking to them now, on how they got together & their careers.
LITTLE KNOWN FACT : One of the members played Joan of Arc in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure".
Omg, I love the Go Gos ❤ I was young when they were popular back in the 80s
Other little known fact : Leard singer was with a band called "The Germs" and she went by the name Dottie Danger.
Sounded so ridiculous, I had to check. Belinda fucking Carlisle WAS a drummer for the Germs 🤯 and I thought the one in Bill&Ted was the cool one🤦♂️
One of the main questions of the 80's, The Go-Go's or The Bagnals as far as all girl groups.
Every time this song comes on I'm totally in a good mood 💕 "We Got the beat" & "Vacation" are great 2 🥰
More Go-Gos please!
Hey hey hey. Love them. Their documentary released about two years ago was awesome
My favorite Go Go's song will always be "We Got The Beat". "Vacation" is right up there, too
I always loved We Got the Beat to this day, this was also a favorite as well
Pure Pop goodness!
The Go Go's was the first concert I went to.
Gos gos are the best!
One of the standard plays on college radio stations in the early 80s, any album of The Go-Go's.
So fun. Loved this then and still do ❤
You can't imagine how popular the Go-Go's were when they arrived back in late 81/early 82. Biggest band in America.
Long time since I heard Belinda Carlisle...Great tune!!!!
Oh jeez! This throws me back to my childhood in SoCal, cruising to the beach in convertibles, listening to this. And we all looked like that, too (roughly). Nice memories when I hear this.
When this song came out, it was everywhere. We all owned the album and it was a great summer. 😁❤️

I love this whole album - "Beauty and the Beat"! (Check out "We Got the Beat" at least!) I always thought their drummer was excellent.
Hollywood party girls. These chicks could party. The record label tried to make them "wholesome", but believe me, they were 80s Hollywood girls.
Of the two all-female rock bands the GoGos consisted of five members just like the Beach boys and had that same California beach sound and the Bangles which consisted of four members just like the Beatles had that same psychedelic sound.
Have you reacted to the Bangles yet? Another AMAZING girl group from the eighties. Prince wrote a song for Susannah Hoffs the lead singer.
SalvoG, Lateley you've been sending me down memory lane with your music selection. To much fun. I might have to consider becoming a Patreon member.
Check out Belinda s...Heaven on Earth
Great driving song.
Got to see them open up for George Michael on his Faith tour back in the 80s and they are just as awesome live.
This song was cowritten by Terry Hall. You should check out his band "The Specials" sometime.
We Got the Beat!!
The girl who sings the solo is the Singing Telegram girl from Clue.
From the late 60's to the late nineties musicians just played music. Meaning their was no thought to what genre to classify themselves. That's why they were so good. Good band with good songs.
Great tune
Don’t let their cuteness deceive you… these were some bad,bad chicks. There’s a documentary about their career. Worth checking it out.
Every time i hear this still I immediately start jumping. Vcation wasa big hiot too ! We got the beat, this town, vacation
Yeah, I wanted to be a Go Go when I grew up. But really, check out "We've Got the Beat," "Vacation," "Turn to You," "Head Over Heals," and "Get up and Go!" Part of any good 80's soundtrack.
Saw them open for the Police back in the early 80's. we used to come up with alternative perverted lyrics to the current songs played on the radio or Mtv at the time. can you imagine where we went with this tune?
its a bop
i remember the first time i heard this song i thought they were singing "unless i see you". i hadn't yet learned to parse valley girl speak.
Besides lead singer Belinda Carlisle having 6 solo Top 40 hits, Jane Weidlin (the girl that sang the little solo part you liked in the car) had a great solo Top 10 hit called "Rush Hour".
You have to check out their hit Vacation
I saw them at Pine Knob in Michigan back in 1980, I believe, and Belinda’s monitors weren’t working (before ear pieces) so she couldn’t hear herself and was off key. She was visibly upset, and I felt so bad for her.
Terry Hall (Fun Boy Three) wrote this when he was 21 with Jane Wiedlin (Go-Gos). I also love Fun Boy Three's version ua-cam.com/video/QhVhK-VVeXo/v-deo.html
I got this album day it came out and preceded to listen to it back to back 7 straight times. Never done that before or since😊Do Automatic✌
Def a Fast times at Ridgemont High song, Great tunes !!
The cute little one is a Professional Dominatrix.
Pretty sure that was just a myth or joke but they went with it.
@@amyk9175 nope saw her interviewed. She owns it.
Vacation!!!!!
Seen them live in Cleveland. They played with The Rolling Stones! Almost got crushed in the doorway a week or so after 11 people were crushed at a Who concert in Cincinnati! People can be ignorant.

Now you've done the GoGo's version of this, do the Fun Boy Three version.
I still remember the joke from middle school when this song came out.. “Why can’t the Go Gos have babies?”
Damn catchy 80s song
I think you should call your patreons “VIGs” 😂
Girls playing their instruments and writing their own songs! That was unheard of at the time.
And, besides all of the fun and games and music, how can they not be cool, cruising around in a '60 Buick LeSabre with the top down? Also known as bubble gum pop

Joe Jackson " steppin' out" and Dire Straits "sultans of swing"
You should check out Foxes and fossils , They are a great band that covers a lot of these older songs and does them justice !
This song is the result of all the ridiculous "jealous" criticism they got.
