And then Jeremy was never seen again, or even spoken of. This is something that shows used to do a lot, that they’ve fortunately gotten better at. “We will have an unbreakable and eternal bond from this day forward. Now go, so I can forget about you by next week’s episode.”
BTW, I know I’ve seen a Star Trek channel where each video ends with Picard saying “Good Lord, didn’t any of you subscribe?!” Now I know where they got the first part of that.
@@daerdevvyl4314 It is "TJWParso". I am subscribed to him.
What I just can't remember is when he said "Subscribe".
@@daerdevvyl4314In my mind Jeremy went back in time and ended up in old Detroit. THat's why he's such a evil litle kid in Robocop 2. He was separated from his brother Worf and he went mad.
Fun fact: if you translate the Klingon words spoken in the R'uustai ritual,, they are a solemn vow to never mention each other again in any future TV episodes.
😅😅
😅
😂😂
Jeremy was so distraught, it led him to sell Nuke on the streets of Old Detroit! 😉
That kid was a little Bastard!
He must've gotten sucked into a time anomaly.
Do you mean to tell me this is the same young actor who played the young punk in Robocop 2? 😮
@@glenncabacungan9269 Yep.
Yeah I wanted to mention to Jen that this was close to Robocop 2 era and that is the same kid.
Jen is out here asking the tough ethical questions of the holodeck. Thankfully, TNG does a really good job of addressing these ethical dilemmas through their plots. Excited for Jen to get to them.
Lol def looking forward to barcley 🙂
@@jessiechen279*Broccoli 🥦
@@TroyConvers5000 🤣😂 Lmao, I forgot about that!
@@jessiechen279I can’t wait for the EMH.
I had a massive thing for Gates McFadden when TNG was airing. If I worked on the Enterprise I'd have been in the holodeck making out with Doctor Crusher after every shift at work!!😂😂😂
A reminder, everyone. Please, no spoilers for the amazing Jen!
Thank you.
I just wanted to post a smiley face at a specific moment of the video.... but, honestly I look forward to Jen getting to stuff eventually... and the jaw dropping reveals.
30:24: "You mean to tell me you've been down here with a dame?"
I love that the word "dame" has entered Jen's vocabulary from watching old movies and shows!
There is nothing like a dame! 🎵
Now i must say that line whilst doing a Humphrey Bogart impression !😅
We gotta bring that word back...
There is a Dame Street in my city of Dublin. It's nowhere near as cool as it sounds!
"I don't think the entity was nefarious..." The best StarTrek stories don't have bad guys.
The Astor boy became brothers with Worf, and in true Trek style was never mentioned again. 😆
@@Billinois78 😂
well that is the style with many series. Often characters introduced that never appear again sadly. Not exclusive to Star Trek.
He had to go, his planet needed him.
Note: The Astor boy died on the way to his home planet
It was mentioned again in the books, specifically the TNG book "Diplomacy".
Considering how he treated other members of his family... that's consistent.
I love that bit of comedy with Picard, O'Brian, and no one else getting his ships in bottles reference. If only Geordi had been there; he understood model ships.
And no spoilers, but ships in bottles do get mentioned again!
And the famous blooper of this scene is also great
@@E_y_a_l of yea, one of the best bloopers ever , darn you need to see that Jen
IIRC, "The Bonding" was written as a direct response to one of Gene Roddenberry's more bizarre edicts he had about this show, that in the 24th Century, we would have evolved past grief. That is why Jeremy tries so very hard to seem like he's fine when he's not, it's showing how hurtful a philosophy is by showing its effects on an orphaned child.
In the original script the kid recreated his mother in the holodeck and refused to leave.
Gene hated that and claimed that kids in the future would be more evolved and accepting of the reality of death.
That is why they brought in the aliens in the script. It was not the kid refusing reality, it was the aliens pushing a fake reality on him.
It took DS9 season 7 to go there with the question of grief and the holodeck.
At least it opened up the door a little bit. Deaths tended to matter more, after this episode and have a bigger impact on the viewer, too. We would not have gotten Sito Jaxa without it.
@@AdamMPick The fact that they blatantly responded to that demand by showing how unhealthy a mindset that is shows you how out of it Gene was at the time.
There's a great DS9 ep about someone that retreats into a holodeck and won't cone out when their life goes bad.
Nog was dealing with some heavy shit in that episode…
@@MegaTechpc DS9 had some heavy eps once Moore took over.
Shhhhhhhhh
@@One.Zero.One101 not a spoiler when there's no name or context.
I saw "The bonding" in 1996... two months after my Mom died of her 5th heart attack. I was 15. I did not do well with it and I just remember screaming at "Marla Astor". My best advice is, don't be the one who tries to make everything fine. The intent is admirable, the implementation is impossible.
We're built to grieve, and it's unhealthy when we don't
I also lost my mom in '96. About a week later I turned on TNG to escape. We never watched Star Trek together so watching it didn't remind me of her. That first episode was Best of Both Worlds and it hooked me in right away. I had seen and even owned the TOS movies but never watched TNG. You can imagine what this episode did to me as it was just six episodes later. Became a lifelong Trek fan thanks to syndication T.V.
14:27 "Worf as a big brother? This is too cute."
And Michael Dorn stands 6'3", so that would be a _big_ brother.
Jen, without giving any spoilers, your questions about holodeck ethics and recreating people are addressed in a future episode
"What The Frick?!" T-shirts coming soon!😂😂
I especially liked Booty Trap because it displayed Picard's complete knowledge and control over his ship!
Jen's talking about holodeck ethics and directly goes very specifically to making out with Picard, I'm sure Patrick Stewart will love to hear that, he always complained Riker got all the babes.

No slip, she's telling us outright she has the hots for Picard.
There is a deleted scene from the Bonding where it shows Troi talking Jeremy about when her father died and how she was not able to express how she was feeling because the adult Betazoids keep reading her mind. Powerful scene. It is on UA-cam somewhere, it was part of the Bluray release...
The “red shirt” trope only works for TOS. For TNG it’s the yellow shirts, lol!
No. It's the Worf Effect.
30:25 - _"You mean to tell me you've been down here with a dame?"_ 🤣
20:10 Picard: "Good lord, didn't anybody here build ships in bottles when they were boys?" - Worf: "I never played with boi-" (everybody laffing but him) - One of the best outtakes.
Recently, as I was watching a reaction video for Stand By Me (1986), I marveled at the depth of emotion and complexity of acting that Wil Wheaton displayed in that role. The writing of that character allowed Mr. Wheaton to really show his skill as a young actor. Then I lamented that TNG squandered such talent by writing the character of Wesley Crusher without the same level of complexity. The talent peeks through where it is allowed, but I imagine it must have been frustrating for Mr. Wheaton to have gone from "Gordie" in Stand By Me to a gaslit meme / trope with the tag-line "Shut up Wesley!"
Considering how the episode starts off I can't help but laugh when Geordi says " I need to get inside there. I need to be able to turn that thing inside out."
Next Jen is the best! But, with an alternate reading of the phrase, there is no next Jen for me. I'm sticking with this one, she's terrific!
Wow, Jenn's questions about ethics and the holodeck are so on point!
I like when we get to see Picard geek out over his hobbies.
Love that you're giving us more and more analysis as we get deeper into the series. Star Trek is at its best when it's very thought-provoking.
Also shout out to O'Brien, he's a real one.
"Maybe I'm giving this too much thought." Nope. Exactly the right amount of thought, as it turns out!
Amount of thought has a 9.37% margin of error.
That first episode was a hard one! I can totally relate to Jeremy and Wesley Crusher. My mother died from cancer two years ago. I was just as angry as Wesley Crusher because my mother was one of the nicest people you’d ever meet. She was kind, caring and compassionate and she didn’t deserve to go out like that. Everyone handles grief differently but I can say that things get better with time. I still get triggered every now and then. The holidays are hard. It’s tough seeing that empty chair at the dinner table. Jeremy and I understand! Trust me!
I love the bonding because it's a literal love letter to the red shirts of TOS and Yellow shirts of TNG/DS(/VOY era. And yes even a non film student like me enjoyed the shot when Worf and Deanna were talking about the kid. Geordie is the comic con fan boi of the crew that's why he's so easy to love. He and O'Brien are the everymen of the show.
It is simultaneously so fun watching you experience all this for the first time, yet so frustrating being unable to bring up spoilers when your questions and comments demand them.
Really appreciate the restraint from posting spoilers 👌Ty for being respectful of Jen's wishes 🖖
@@karlwest437 for sure 🖖
Very true. Unfortunately, some people can't help themselves. Some don't even try to restrain. Others think they're holding back, but still say things like "wait till the season finale" (someone already spoiled that it's a cliffhanger) or "get tissues ready", etc.
@@Billinois78 Joey from Friends speaking code about The Shining: "Remember when the kid sees those two blanks in the hallway? All blank and no blank makes blank a blank blank. The end, when Jack almost kills them all with that blank, but that last second, they get away?!"

it's hard to comment without spoilering, however, you have some really great questions that get explored in future episodes. And I hope you remember these questions when you get to them.
Her questions made me wish we could just jump ahead, but she'd be so lost. Lol
Thought the same thing.
Damn it's so hard to bite my lip and avoid spoilers. I'm so excited for the episodes I'm thinking of but I won't say anything, all I'm gonna say is those questions will be addressed in TNG and DS9 in some really good episodes. Please guys no spoilers don't ruin it for Jen.

Thank you for sharing it.
"You guys have seen me nerd haaaard" had me laugh out loud. As far as I know you just happen to enjoy a lot of the same stuff I do and if that makes you a nerd then I guess I am one too! I thought that was adorable from you. Thanks for the videos, already looking forward to the next as I used to do every week back when TNG first aired. See you again soon.
Season 1 was about character development, which continued into Season2 but with the addition of story development, and Season 3 was when the series really hit its stride. I'm glad it lasted 7 years.
There are several episodes coming that directly address your philosophical questions about the holodeck. Keep on Trekkin'!
The actor who played jeremy, is the same actor who played the young villain from Robocop 2
Gabriel Damon, he seems to have left the business but was a fantastic child actor.
Cocktails from a replicator are generally going to be Synthahol, although they do have the ability to manufacture "real" alcohol as well. That's why they're never worried about getting wasted on duty.
Similar to non-alc. beer.
watching a couple people react to TNG, I just want to say i appreciate you actually watching each episode and giving your amazing thoughts and conclusions.
Troi has the Superman syndrome. Can only have a measured ability each episode so no to just easily overpowered the antagonist.
Love your TNG series so much Jen!
Similar issues with technology. There were constant problems that could be solved in a minute, but system X was either damaged or couldn't be used because of environmental conditions.
Troi did directly tell them things to do from time to time. And when she did, everyone just ignored her anyway. I think she likes being uselessly vague on purpose so she feels like maybe they actually care what she thinks. They'll just ignore her anyway regardless and do what they are going to do, but she can feel like she provided input.
The writers are constantly doing this, especially to poor Worf's stunt double as well
That's the problem with overpowered plot devices like truth serum, mind control, mind reading, clairvoyance. Once you introduce them it opens a Pandora's Box of "Why didn't you use it in episode 4 or 9 or 13 or 17 or 22?". Then the writers constantly have to make excuses why you couldn't use them. It's too much of a headache, I prefer writers don't introduce such things in the first place.
20:39 Remember Guinan's line (not shown in the reaction) "Maybe because a bald man was very kind to me once when I was hurting. Took care of me." No spoilers, just try to remember she said that.
I didn't think Shatner's toupee in _Generations_ was THAT obvious
I like your questions at the end. That is the great thing about Star Trek. The show constantly raises deep, ethical questions regarding issues that are present in our world today or will soon be. More often than not, these questions are raised unintentionally.
I've always loved the interaction of Riker and O'Brien after Picard beamed away. Riker gives him a look and O'Brien says "I did, I really did....ships in bottles, great fun". Makes me laugh every time. I laughed watching this even though it wasn't shown, just because it made me think of it.
Her questions are so prognosticatory.
"Hollow Pursuits" and "Galaxy's Child" come to mind
And "Time's Arrow"...
and the DS9 holosuites
shhhh
@@silikon2 they're just episode titles
Nice job bonding with that child Worf, now off to the Starfleet Orphanarium with you! (You'll never see him again). 🤣
Jen is going to love the Lt Barclay episodes.
Booby Trap. One of my favorites in this season. Hello Leah Brahms. And Picard at the helm.
Your concerns about the holodeck? There will be an episode about it with Broccoli.
Funny how the kid being adopted by Worf will never come back in the series... shame.
Gotta love Booby trap OST by Ron Jones. So thrilling.
Picard using good old gravity assist to take the Enterprise out of the trap is a classic as well.

"Feel like something is always blocking her from being able to use her power"
Yeah. Plot. 😉😂
Well, good! 😡
Troi is creepy, and intrusive, and Rude!
She gives me the creeps! 😩
It's been a while since I've many of these episodes, but they quickly come back to me as I watch along with you. While I may have thought some of them were "boring" when I was watching them live as a kid, they are so much more meaningful now.
Thank you for being so excited for this show!! Such a great way to spend my Sunday evenings!
Commercial break!
The second I saw Susan Gibney as Leah Brahms😍😍😍
You mean Captain Benteen?
@@TroyConvers5000 Liked her as Captain Benteen I'm DS9, but absolutely love her as Leah
She auditioned for the role of Captain Janeway
She reminds me of Sean Young…or at least Rachael in “Blade Runner”.
"Spent some time together? Like, rehr?" Makes what can only be interpreted as the intergalactic gesture for doing it.
Sunday wouldn't Sunday without these videos. Thanks, Jen!
6:26 to paraphrase; Nerd long and prosper Ms Murray🖖
The actress who played Dr. Brahms will be in a multitude of future Star Trek episodes, not just as Dr. Brahms. She is one of many actors/actresses who play multiple roles in multiple Star Trek series.
I thought the actress who played Dr Brahms was-GORGEOUS-and had a-NICE-smile. Just my 2 cents.
As a guy named Jeremy who lost a parent as a child this episode always hit me at home, especially as a kid.
There's a great blooper reel about the "ship in a bottle" scene. Worf never plays with ???. Funny stuff. Now we are into some of that best Star Trek and the next 2 episodes....well, they do get even better.
Gabriel Damon (Jeremy) is in a couple of sci-fis around this age. He's a little villain in Robocop 2 and a mastermind in Terminus.
And Littlefoot in The Land Before Time. Quite the opposite role to Hob.
The actor playing Jeremy also played one of the main characters in Robocop 2 (1990)
It came out a year after this episode originally aired.
His character in Robocop 2 was a very different from this episode.
Lets just say he didn't have a good role model like Worf in that movie.
Having Worf as your big brother would be an interesting experience. Nobody would get away with messing with you, but it would also suck if he decided he wanted to beat you up. Brothers are gunna brother.
Leave it to Picard to manually "drift" the Enterprise around an asteroid. (Cool factor: 1701 XP)
Please respect Jen...........................NO SPOILERS of any kind.
On Geordi’s holodeck date with Christy, he has the violinist playing the famous Hungarian Dance No. 5, suggesting he’s a Brahms fan, or thought she was one. This is presumably why her name jumps out at him.
According to one of the "star trek novels, Jeremy aster followed in his mom,s footsteps,he became an archeologist.he visited word,s adoptive parents.too.
I love this episode and i feel like you actually get it. It explores loss and grief. Even the alien species feels terrible about Lt Astor and tries to do the right thing (as you say).
Booby Trap is one of my favorite episodes, I just forgot about the trap part. I knew as soon as I heard Leah Brams.

Speaking of Yar, I wonder if wiping that stuff off her face would have helped when trying to revive her
Holodeck ethics is a great topic that maybe just maybe might get talked about at some point no promises ;)
Booby trap is one of my top ten TNG episodes. There will be a call back to this episode in a future seasons' episode.
Whenever Jen says boobytrap , I think of the “Goonies “
Ah Jen is so cute, I love her analysis of this show, superb.
Interesting thought the Holo Deck could become someone's "Mirror of Erised"!
Scott Adams said the holodeck would be society's last invention.
It's fair to say that no sane person is listening to what Scott Adams says anymore.
@@TroyConvers5000 Oh. I had no idea. Why is everyone going crazy?

There's a funny Worf blooper when Picard is talking about the ship in a bottle if you ever get a chance to check out the season 3 bloopers.
Some of the questions you are asking will definitely come up again. Great episode. I won't spoil the details for you, but the initials of the key character in that episode are R.B. Oh, and that other thing comes up again too, separately. That's *also* a great episode.
20:08 there's a blooper where Worf flubs his line "I did not play with toys" as "I did not play with boys". I do love Data's "I was never a boy." Let's get Data a model kit of the Constitution class Enterprise, see how an android copes with those dang nacelles. Its dang hard keeping those straight until the glue sets.
I had a cat named Patches when I was a kid. All black except for 2 small white patches on his belly.
I recognize the kid playing Jeremy in the first episode. He is also in "Robocop 2" (1990).😉
I just noticed that in the opening scene of The Bonding, the crewman in the background is wearing the old style uniform. I guess it took a while for everyone to be issued the update.
Of course this is consistent with the original series. You saw people wearing Pilot style uniforms as late as the middle of the second season.
Fun Fact: Because of his acting in this episode, Gabriel Damon (Jeremy) was chosen as one of the main protagonists in the film "Robocop 2" that was released a year later.
"antagonists"
Not "protagonist"
Jen here discussing Holodeck ethics leads me to say a single, cryptic word: "Broccoli".
It is not so much looking back, it is saying the old ways were just as good and effective that reliance on technology is not always a good thing
You bring very interesting points about the ethics of the holodeck. I can't wait for you to watch future episodes that will cover all these scenarios! -OG
A new spin off coming soon, "Star Trek: Klingon Family Values"! 😂 😂
I really love your reactions, Jen. Keep up the good work...though hopefully it's also a lot of fun.
Valid point about how the expendability of crew members is treated. TOS rarely mourned the loss of "red-shirt" security and landing party members. Certainly, there were some stories, such as the wedding couple's story, that did focus on the impact of death, but as a rule it was just accepted as part of the risk of working in Starfleet.
The job on the Enterprise is the holodeck cleaning crew. Talk about busy.
0:39 "Back in the day"
Jen reminiscing about a couple of months ago as back in the day is pure gold.
Never change Jen!
20:10 Did anyone else think of beans when they heard this? 😂
O'Brien built ships in a bottle, of course he did.
I'll say that in TOS there are some episodes in which a few red shirts die, and Captain Kick is very concern about the loos of each one of them, he express that out in those episodes.
Yes, Jen does nerd out a lot. That is why she is the best reaction girl ever!
Hi Jen hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Thanks John you too!
The boy adopted into Worf's family, and totally forgotten in all future episodes that have to do with Worf's family.
LOL. I’m looking forward to Jen being introduced to Reginald Barclay.
Dr. Brahms is basically the microsoft paperclip from the 90s, except beautiful and helpful.
