I look at all media sources but generally Associated Press covers the basics. The rest falls into place depending on what we think we need to know but most of it is mundane
We as a citizen of Myanmar not agree with the current move and would like to request the world leaders. UN and the world medias help our country- our leaders- our people - from this bitter acts. We want democracy and want our country to develop as our nabouring countries.

This is why, even as a millennial/gen Z aged person, I do not have cable at my house. I deleted Facebook. I have not turned my tv on for more than a few hours in the last week, and even when I did, I watched a movie.
I recommend everyone try this, at least for a short term. I genuinely felt happier as a person without all of the negativity being pushed everywhere you look. Talk to your neighbors. Go for a walk. Spend time with your friends and family. Go fishing for a day. Leave the radio off when you are driving somewhere and roll the windows down. Just shut everything off, spend some quality time with the people you love and you will be amazed at how much happier you will be. You feel a huge amount of stress lifted from your shoulders.
Hardest part about being my age is finding a partner who isn't addicted to their cell phones, or validation from strangers on social media.

Only if you actually travel. If you’re just sightseeing and staying in nice hotels you’re not doing anything to actually see the world. You’ve got to make human connections when you’re traveling

It also gave me an opportunity to practice other languages, respect others cultures and keep track of money in a foreign currency- very good life skills

100%! I’ve lived abroad for 18 years in Italy, The U.K., Portugal, and the U.A.E and have traveled to 40 more countries. I scarcely recognize the country that I was born and raised in. Having grown up in the 70s and 80s I am shocked at the extent to which we’ve allowed institutional interests to suck us into dogmatic views that are counter to our collective interests!

@@crissignori7482 Polar opposites! :) I bought a vacation home in Porto in 2017 because it’s so charming and chill. The U.A.E. is good for work, experiencing people from all over the world, and blowing off steam. My dog hates the climate, though! ;)

The most shocking to me after returning abroad is the materialism in western nations like the UK, Canada and U.S. People who have very little seem to be very happy as long as the family is together and everyone is healthy. The west also seems to have a lot of lonely people, many who also have a mental illness. This despite being the most socially connected generation in history.
It’s not the most socially connected though. You can get faux social connection by the internet, but nothing replaces actually spending time with people in real life.
I am planning to leave Canada for Italy where I have most of my family. Although born and brought up in Canada I don't feel the values this country pretends to have .... I feel more disconnected as time goes on.

The problem with America is that our values/purpose etc is to make as much money as possible and use it to buy as much stuff as possible. Every problem we have circles back to this.

It's the fact that the economy started doing this some decades ago and now no one can stop it. The human spirit is being crushed by the need to feed the economic machine
Without money, you can't feed or take care of yourself and the people you care about. So we have very good reason to ensure we're making enough money for that, and that the State can't take that away from us just for disagreeing with them.
True for Canada as well. Lived abroad, came back and found there is a crisis of spirit. This leads to depression, anxiety, etc… which puts you on your phone, computer, or in front of your television wayyy too much, which further stirs the pot, making you more depressed, anxious, etc… We need our community back. It’s the only way to live a happy life
Nonsense, it's about life choices you make. If you sit the whole day in front of your TV or computer, or check your phone every 5 minutes, then it's YOUR choice.

Its so true. After living abroad, and coming back I was feeling anxiety. Its harming and causing us to fight each other. I loved the calm feeling, family and relaxed vibes in Europe.
That's part of the reason I would like to leave Canada for Europe

Absolutely! When out of Canada and have to return my anxiety goes through the roof. I don't hate Canada but I don't recognize it nor do I like a lot about it. As an expat I've changed drastically. Travel causes one to see the world with new eyes and that's a good thing.

Very insightful video. I've lived half my life outside the US, lived in 6 countries, and traveled to 43, but I still love the US for many things. However, like you, I am not blind to America's glaring problems. The key is whether Americans are willing to listen to constructive criticism, warnings, and advice from abroad, or as my experience sadly has shown me, fall back on "America, love or leave it" rhetoric, as the country collapses. Constructive criticism is a sign of love or concern. I don't offer that for countries I don't care about.
Pro Tip: turn of the news and just live your life. The media lie to us, by default.
We canceled cable TV five years ago. Haven’t watched a network newscast in 8 years. Shut off FB five years ago. Never had a Twitter, IG, snap chat, or any of these time wasters. Have traveled more in the past 5 years than in the past 20.
The world is full of vibrant, alive and interesting people who enjoy sharing their stories. That’s what I seek these days; real human connections.
This virus will pass. But who will you choose to become when it’s over?

glad to see other ppl on the same wavelength. i never watch news at all anymore outside of MAYBE the weather, and even then usually just when i have plans that could be affected by it because otherwise, i like the surprise of it lol. thats the beauty of the world that has been stripped from us during this digital era and so now instead of working harder to get information, one has to work harder to preserve some sort of mystery, wander, imagination, etc. so NOT watching the weather and just waiting to see what it brings is one way, as sad as it is to have to grasp that far lol

Very true. I was born in Ecuador, moved to Colombia, then lived in Spain.
I came to the USA about 25 years ago; while attending college, I was homeless and slept in my car for three years.
When I graduated college after studying for eight years, I got a job in the tech industry, and in the eyes of society, I am “successful.”
The other day, while purchasing a bagel for my son, I ran into an old couple who could not speak the language; I helped them order food in Spanish; when I was done, someone behind me said, “Go back to your country.”
I am a US Citizen. This is my county.

Its cause older white Americans arent used to hearing Spanish speakers. They grew up when there wasnt ever other languages spoken around them. So it is off-putting to hear. Anyone would feel the same in their country. Do you really think Mexico would just accept a bunch of White people moving in and speaking english everywhere? No thats crazy. They would be racist and judgmental for a generation and then people would just forget about it and move on after that. Thats how it goes. So you should really understand that is why they act like that. And understand that you ARE an immigrant here and you are also a US Citizen, but you should be respectful of the native people and their experience even if they are rude sometimes. Really any country in the world is the same, I promise. US is the exception

I've never met such behaviour in Europe, while times change and we are less welcoming (mostly due to mass media fear carousel and close to borders ongoing wars) I still believe that nobody should be frowned upon based on the language he speaks here. Assuming that he would be willing to try to communicate.
When the US was being born, it was pretty common in Poland to speak German, Hebrew or Russian on the streets here - for some Polish people it was their first language, it's just that 1st and 2nd WW as well as birth of modern politics changed that.
It’s so “funny” how some of the Americans in this day forget that the US once wasn’t “theirs”. That they are immigrants or came from immigrants. It’s what made the country they love.

I am a Black American and I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have only ever lived in diverse suburban middle-class communities, and what I saw was people who were able to get along despite racial differences. The powers that be would have you think we are at each other's throats all the time. In my experience, it is not true. A lot of the stuff we see, the divisions, and the social media stuff are orchestrated or are unusual incidents that are purposely pushed to the forefront. Average Americans want to get along with one another. I love my American people, and I hate what is happening to us.

Taught overseas for most of my adult life. When I moved back to the US, I was shocked by the saturation level of all forms of media and pharmaceutical ads.
Sometimes I'll stop watching something on TV altogether if I see one of those dang pharma ads. I hate those ads with a passion. They should be banned.

I’m reading this 2 years later and none of this has changed for the better, but seems worse. Our politics are shameful, our Affordable Care Act coverage is terrible for all other than the poor, our churches/religion is a mess and fear is everywhere... what’s happened to America? Greed, selfishness, and me!, Me! seems to over ride common sense and charity. Just saying...

I've lived abroad for 10 years and these insights are pretty spot on. Obviously there are a relative amount of each of these in other countries. But as an American, I can confirm this is how I feel when I go back. Like family members, I'm more critical (and defending) of my own kind. But it is out of love. We can do better.
Some of the media claims to be "fair and balanced" ....it's obvious that they are NOT. You are the real deal Peter...Thank you for your dedication and diligence to bringing us the good...the bad...and the ugly. The TRUTH.

I'll take one claiming to be fair and balanced any day versus the one saying American is horrible and racist and not covering certain stories that go against their agenda. That would be most of the mainstream media like Peter was talking about.
It’s a comparative analysis. Compared to a dog, I’m a genius. Compared to MSNBC, FOX News is actually fair and rather balanced.
All of them push the narrative of fear and division that Pete referenced. Because as he smartly pointed out, it sells ad revenue / ratings.
Dear Peter, I lived in San Francisco for 7 years in the 70s. I've lived in 14 cities in the U.S. and dozens overseas -- working around the world for 20 years for the USG. I spent 5 years in Africa, 5 years in the Middle East, several years in Europe ... around 70 countries in total. I have been aided and protected by strangers in the furthest corners of the world. Most people who boast that the USA is the greatest country in the world have never owned a passport. Keep preachin', but I'm afraid you're preaching to the choir. the UAE has the highest personal consumption of resources per individual citizen etc. etc.

You forgot about driving education, job instability (add to fear), and chemically added/modified food.
I think the chemically added and modified food has been good for something. Today people in their 20’s look like kids, 30-somethings look like what 20-somethings did a few decades ago and 40 and 50-somethings just look like regular adults, not old fogies in their easy chairs. 60-80 year olds! All Baby Boomers and they look like 40 and 50-somethings from the time they were kids and young adults! Only over 80 or 90 they look their age now because they’re from the old generation that looked their age!
Right because no one drives insane in other countries, no one gets laid off or fired in other countries and no other countries have chemicals in the food...GET REAL...grow your own or support a local farmer and buy fresh produce and quit your damn whining...

Right around 8:13, his remarks about entitlement really resonate. I used to fall into that mindset too. I believe it's natural to measure yourself against those closest to you. If you're privileged but experience a downturn compared to your past, or if you perceive yourself as having less than your neighbor, you begin to feel that your life is challenging and unsatisfactory, and may end up whining. As I've started to hear diverse stories from people of all backgrounds, I've come to recognize the multitude of opportunities we have. It's a perspective that's harder to grasp when you're confined to your comfort zone and focused on your immediate circle. But once you step beyond that and start exploring different viewpoints and hearing varied narratives, you gain a genuine understanding of your own life and how good you have it.
Peter, you are an amazing human, and I'm very thankful to have you providing your content. Always a fresh perspective that I can count on. What you've achieved thus far is nothing short of great. I see your sub numbers growing, and I'm glad to be a part of your viewership. Right now, I'm watching current videos and catching up on older videos. I'm consistently surprised that what I thought about some parts of the country, the people, the world, is completely biased and/or inaccurate. What a refreshing feeling to watch my views shift! Btw, I absolutely despise the mainstream media, and I do not watch it. I see the senior generation (age 70+) watching that garbage, but I think my generation (GenX) and younger have their eyes open a bit more. Blessings to you - God, protect this man at all costs. I also travelled all over the world. I'm from England, and have lived in New York, Sydney, and Dublin. I travelled extensively in Asia, Europe, and The Americas. The biggest lesson I learned after it all - People are the same all over the world. There's good, bad, and indifferent everywhere. You see the best and worst at home and abroad. I'm now back living in England where I realised the biggest problem back then wasn't life in England, it was my life that was the problem.
Partially correct. There level of isolation and depression is far higher in the dUSA than elsewhere (that is, for a so-called developed country).

@@clarastella8412 Thanks for your very kind words. As someone once told me "You had to travel the world to find that out - So, it was worth it".
I agree with some of the things he says. I do believe that the level of anxiety that is developed in the US over the last few years is very high, higher than when I was a younger adult. I know so many people on anti-anxiety medications. I don't think being on the meds is the real issue, I think the problem is people feel like they have to be on those because of their anxiety.
But we have to take into account personal experiences. I just had a conversation yesterday about how I grew up in a neighborhood in New England that was safe and people helped each other. And in a different part of the country, over 50 years later, I still have that in my life. My friend is in her 70s and grew up on the south side of Chicago. I lived outside the US for over 15 years proudly serving my country in truly the worst countries on the planet. When I returned I was shocked and saddened. The first thought I had was I wonder how all these people would cope if they had to walk three miles every day of your life just to find water or had no medicine to kill the mass of worms swarming in their bellies and those of their children. I think we are systematically emotionally battered by external forces, scared of living, and dying, over indulged and mentally bored. I feel very sorry for us. You and I could have a good conversation.

I had a talk with a bus guide guy from Lomé, Togo when I was in NYC and he told me they were forced to be overly nice to clients in an unnatural way, which was a shock to him when he arrived. At first he thought Americans were always so nice and caring, but he found out with time that it’s mostly a facade and behind it is the exact same thing as in every country, a normal self interesting human.

The USA has a lot of problems. I’ve noticed this after living abroad for several years. I think one of the biggest problems is how tense and difficult everything is here. You really need to build your career, pay the mortgage, health insurance, car payments, student loans ect… It’s just an endless list of people trying to squeeze every last dollar out of you whereas in other countries there is more of a live day to day sort of attitude. You can just live in society without the need for so much materialism. For example Thailand. You can just go there, pay $300/ month or so for an apartment. No groceries. Just get some $2 street food for each meal. Take cheap minibuses that take you anywhere in the country, stop by the temple to zen out for a bit. Health insurance? Healthcare is affordable even without it. Buy a cheap scooter and ride around town, the weather is always hot 🥵
But you have this privilege because you’re American and using USD. Does the average Thai person have the privilege to live your stress free life?

1. People need to realise that profit is not the holy grail. People need to be treated fairly by the employer. People's happiness and wellbeing are above profits.
2. Healthcare is not a privilege, it's a basic human right. The government should protect their people, that's the whole purpose of having a government.
3. Socialist measures like free healthcare or unemployment checks are not communism.
4. Companies do not own you. YOU are giving them part of your time in exchange of a pay check. Companies need to stop treating employees as cattle.
5. People should be way more flexible with ideas like healthcare or gun control. The propaganda perpetuated by companies and politicians through the media is getting people to act AGAINST their best interest.

I couldn’t agree more!!! Trickle down economics over the past 40 years is in a large part to blame. We idolized “trust fund babies” and were treated like their slaves. I know from direct experience. Living in the UK I do identify with many of your concerns over the media and politicians. Many Americans stay with me while they are doing there Masters at University (Oxford) and what they all like is the fact that you can walk to town/shops/films/park or get a bus and you are not dependant on a car. Most really like the food as they can buy food from markets which is unadulterated with chemicals, or meat from the butcher cut from a carcass.
Thank you so much for this video! I am a millennial and left the US during the pandemic and realized everything I learned as an American, specifically about being a Black American, was false. Racism and discrimination are NOT universal. I was treated so much better in Indonesia and in Germany. I’m excited to finish school and travel the world!
@Yah Maha I can understand that. I just don’t go out of my way looking for racism and discrimination. I am not in fear of it so even if I do experience it, I’m sure I won’t always recognize it. Even in the states, being a minority at an Ivy League institution, I don’t experience racism and discrimination. I’m sure it’s real for most people who may look like me but my parents raised me to believe that my race was an asset, not a liability. I will never stop myself from doing something I want to do even if I’m the only person of color in the room.
Racism and discrimination did not exist in Bali because the Balinese people were not conditioned like American people. There are actually places on this earth where people see you as a human being regardless of race, gender, background, etc. I just pray that Black Americans can get out of this culture one day and see themselves as who they really are
@@crystaltharrell this is definitely true... for a black person coming from the first world. When you visit other countries you are treated as an AMERICAN first before anything else. However an African visiting who looks the same as you will have a more negative experience, since they are coming from 3rd world. When you come to these places as an American you are treated better because you are coming from the first world, and are assumed to be a visitor rather than an immigrant. There's a big difference in the treatment of tourists vs migrants. An American seen as a tourist is seen as contributing to the tourism economy, while an African would automatically be assumed to be a migrant which often comes with negative treatment. So I think the wording you chose here is coming from a privileged place, which is totally fine. But we shouldn't make generalizations. I, as a black American was treated very well in Italy, but my black Italian friend who was born and raised there had a completely opposite experience, because his family were migrants from Africa.

What you describe seems to be an economically biased form of discrimination, not just based upon someone's skin color. 'White' people coming from 'poorer' nations, immigrants, are also sometimes treated differently in 'wealthy' countries, and seen as a threat or problem by some.
In the 21st century the word 'Racism' is not just about skin color anymore (scientificly speaking there are no races, just one Human Race), but embeds any type of group discrimination based upon a label, like gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, political view, etc, etc. It's in general a 'We' vs. 'Them' way of thinking, dividing people into seperate groups, and from there seeing, valueing and treating them differently than yourself or 'members of your group'.
I thank my parents for educating me at an early age, and reading, keeping journals, and traveling were the best forms of education.

I agree with most of what you say. I would agree that most people individually are not racist -- the country has a serious institutionalized case of racism and a lack of privilege for so many. I also think that San Francisco having such a homeless problem is not because they give so much that it attracts them. Studies have shown the overwhelming majority are from the area and the central problem is because of housing costs being so great, not that being homeless in SF (and CA in general) is so much better than being homeless elsewhere.

I lived outside the U.S. for 7 years, went back in 2018 and found I couldn't re-adjust. I went in and out in 2019. I grew up in San Francisco and am now watching from Cambodia. I don't think I can psychologically, physically or financially cope with the U.S. anymore.

Gidday from Australia, this reminds me of when I was in Oshkosh in 1993. At a bar, the locals had no idea of the world outside the US. They were shocked when I showed them my Medicare card and told them that I paid $700 per year with no deductible. They could not believe that the minimum wage in Australia in 1993 was $15 per hr. ( today $23 ) and that we paid lower income tax. Americans were too isolated then and therefore believed what they are told. The internet should have changed this by now, but it has not.

All politicians should serve no more that a 4 year term and a full review should be completed before their term ends, that way they are held responsible or praised for thier actions which affects every American across the board before reelection. And a cap should be given to politicians when it comes to campaigns, salaries and other accessible funds. After all they should be elected because they want to improve living standards, policies, the economy and serve their country. Anyone who becomes a president should have served in the military...way too many things to say but for now I'll leave it at that.

Had some hockey gear that had been passed down for years and was probably about 25 years old. Still in great shape, some of the padding was compressed but still great protection. Decided to finally retire it and get some modern equipment. After 1 game the knee pad was cracked and they fought me to warranty it out as a defect. It was deemed "wear and tear" after 1 game with no impacts after the previous one I had was abused for nearly 3 decades without a scratch on it.
I grew up in the US and have lived in Japan for 8 years now. I agree with all of these points, but also see some of the same points--sometimes in slightly different flavors--here in Japan too.

He didn't really get into most of the serious issues, just some feel good stuff. He did touch on Healthcare but compared it to him buying an overseas insurance plan rather than explaining how almost all countries have more or less free healthcare. Often very good (depending on where of course) he did touch on the homeless, which is an important one but nothing on crime and guns!
This is my voice it's never free. I'm English and we pay it out of our taxes. It's only in the last ten years or so I've realised how much of a struggle for millions of American people are scared to call for an ambulance or go to a hospital to get treated, because of cost.
Where as I can stroll into A & E or call an ambulance, not so much with covid, but I think you get my point.

@Behizy How much money you spend on healthcare is irrelavant if it's being spent wrongly. Sometimes there are truly things that countries such as America are better at, but when it comes to healthcare there is a gold standard in the world of free (or mostly free) healthcare for all. This of course works better in some countries and worse in others, but overall works very well in the western world, and America is still using the old inefficient ways. I don't think this should be about political sides. This should be something all good people whether Republican or Democratic can agree on. It's a no brainer, and I don't get why so many Republicans seem to be against something which provides good healthcare for all, while never taking away people's rights to extra paid insurance. Instead of arguing against it, people should work together to make sure America studies the systems in other successful countries, and figures out the best method which will work best for USA.
I agree 100% with you Peter. There used to be openness in relations, minds etc. But now many are becoming closed minded and divided, letting others decide for them what to think and not deciding for themselves based on what they see not based on what someone else tells them to see or feel. I use to drink ~10 cups of coffee/day. I went cold turkey ~10 yrs ago. All I ever drink now is Twinnings Earl Grey & English Breakfast. I still get ~4 hrs sleep each night but life goes on. I have traveled a lot and love America in spite of its imperfection. I love going abroad but love coming home. My family and I have worked hard our lives, I have a garden and cook from scratch. I appreciate what I have and look for the good. I live in a nice community and have close relationships and live a healthy lifestyle.
Some European countries are hugely overinflated and would be of poor value to live there. I've traveled but also held a job all of my life. I guess I'm not much of a whiner and never expected that I was owed anything. Hugs. Happiness is inside!

@@vg7985 A lot of the dystopian things from science fiction have come true, especially in the last 40 years or so. The reason why most people don't notice it is because most people are incredibly stupid and these things came on very slowly like the frog in the slowly boiling water.

I could also add that most don’t realize we are heading towards a dystopian future because there is no main character, no revealing plot, no music to add tension, and it doesn’t last 2 hours like a movie. Life is a slow moving scene, and everything is converging to a point of no return, but we can’t see when that point is happening.

I have a different opinion. To me America is transitioning from a state of total denial to anger. We have been told we are the beat, #1 in about everything and people are realizing we are not. The middle class was sold down the river by Corporations for sake of quarterly profits and CEO bonuses. Likewise, politicians did what lobbyist paid them to do. Rome, France, England, you name it all peaked and America peaked.
Most Americans don't want to hear what l am saying, get angry at me, say l am un-American for pointing out what has happened. I am over it, live abroad, tired of arguing with fellow Americans. Let them deal with it, l am fine. I prefer to not be around pissed off Americans.

Re-watching this two years later and all I can think is Peter Santenello for President 2024. If you ran, you would have my vote. I believe in order to be a successful leader you really should travel the world and see what works and what doesn't so that you have the knowledge and experience to set up your country for success. You really summarized a lot of my own thoughts about living in the US and I haven't even lived in another country, only traveled to Germany a few times.

I am fortunate to have a very good friend who has a nice property in Spain. Once or twice a year I have the chance to stay there for a month or more in Majorca. This past June I was there. It was hot like here but very peaceful. The Majorcan people are accepting and friendly and kind. The last week I began feeling anxiety about about my return to the U.S. To the point that when I got back to the U.S. I have a feeling of dread about what the next day will bring. I haven't felt like this since the Vietnam Nam War.

I was born and raised in SF and although my wife and I moved to the east bay in 1985 when my twins were born we started a routine of driving to SF three times per week and walking 10-20 miles all over the city. We've been doing it for over 12 years now. I agree with everything you said in this video and I love your videos where you interview folks from very out of the way, rural places. Although I'm a city boy I fell in love with the small towns all over the country when I rode my bicycle across the US in 1982. Keep up the great work. And keep the faith. 👍

Peter, wow! I have been watching you for a while and I had no idea you were from Vermont! I live here, have most of my life, and it's horrible. When I was married, we had moved to Ohio in 2000 due to lack of opportunities here and it's too expensive!! I came back in 2007, divorce and my aged parents needing help. My adult children wanted to come back here but again, no employment opportunities and income does not match being able to afford to live here. I wish I could leave, but now I am disabled and essentially trapped here. I hate being away from my kids and grandchildren. Anyhow, it's just bad in this country, I've known it for a long time and I am so glad that you aren't afraid to speak out about these things. I love your videos, thank you so much for what you do!!
You have exactly what I feel opinion wise. I have also lived and worked in several countries, and when I came back here to the USA, over the years, I found that society is breaking down, and it is a very scary prospect.
Been living in the US for 19 years and I know people are nice here ( from experience) but there is a great lack of showing love to each other. A hello and a smile doesn’t cost anything but we tend to forget.
there is an old man who stands outside his house on nice days and waves to passing cars. i always wave to him because he's probably lonely and wants a little human interaction. i'm friendly with store clerks and waitpersons and most of the people i run across. i'm not middle class, but i do make up little ditty bags for the homeless with non-perishable foods and socks and knit hats and gloves and lady stuff for the women. all from the dollar stores. it's unbearable to see so many people hurting.
