For correct translations with explanations for bts songs, i recommend doolset lyrics. You'll not only get the lyrics, but you'll get a better understanding of them. For example, you'll know sky is capitalized because it's referring to specific universities in Seoul. Great reaction, borahae 💜
As someone who did somewhat good in elementary school but didn't finish college either because of my adhd and depression I felt the same way listening to a BTS song for the first time. And girl this is barely even scratching the surface of their discography. I'd say about 60 to 70% of their songs have such powerful messages and social commentary and it pains me that they are still mostly known by the general public for the 3 english songs that they didnt even write. The solo works of Agust D and RM are especially the most hard-hitting. I don't know when you will ever get to react to them but if you are already about to get emotional in this I can't imagine what it'd be like for you once you discover the rest of what they created. BTS' pen game in the whole kpop industry is just unmatched.
There’s so much context abt South Korean society that I wanna explain to you that I can tell you’re (currently) unaware of, but given the wonderful nature of BTS’ music-they actually address all of it in their music. So I’ll hold off on posting novels of context into your comments until you get to songs like DOPE, Baepsae, and Am I Wrong 😂😂 in the meantime, I just ask you to hold onto the themes BTS discuss in their music. So far you’ve heard songs addressing the youth, dreams, and the pressure on SK youth (specifically as it relates to school). Don’t forget this! Bc as BTS grew up their lyrical content grew with them, and they continued to expand on these topics to address the hardships of young adults and then Korean society as a whole. It’s really wonderful to take in when you take a step back and look at their entire discography/career
Also, they're not saying not to work hard! When you get to Dope, the song is really about how they work harder than others. But it is to be able to choose what your dream is, what you're working for. Ah, even as an older ARMY they have given me so much comfort.
SKY stands for Seoul National University, Yeonsei University, and Korea National University. They are the 3 “ivy leagues” of South Korea which almost every South Korean student aims to get into (in order to get the best job opportunities)
I can't believe no one has commented with one of the most important comments by Yoongi: “I don’t know what circumstances you were in, but I think you must have had tremendous courage. Giving something up decisively takes lots of courage. And, you worked hard. Fighting.” Not doing college when it's not for you, even with the overemphasis on it in this society, is SO BRAVE. 💜
@@susank.548Agree. He has said a lot of words no one had said to me before but I wish someone had. Like it’s okay to not have “big dreams” and this one about quitting decisively. It got me to look at several “failures” I felt ashamed about in an entirely different light and stop belittling myself for them.
@7Flowers1Dream Loving Yourself is a difficult task, but as Namjoon has said, even his mistakes are a part of the constellation that is him.( something like that,I don't have the exact quote), but things like this is a whole new world for me,even at age 67( yeah, I'm that silver ARMY,getting shot down by my 4yr old granddaughters preschool teacher today, when I mentioned BTS for the very first time, she asked if I was one of those screaming fanatics! @@susank.548 Oh, their lyrics are fantastic and resonate with people regardless of age and other demographics. I’m over 50 so also a Silver ARMY. At therapy several days ago I brought up BTS too after I was shown a type of mindfulness exercise that could have been taken from the lyrics to Magic Shop, the scripted instructions were that similar. It’s no wonder most ARMYs (me included) find that song very comforting. The therapist made note of several songs to look up their lyrics. I agree loving yourself isn’t easy but I at least like myself more now and I noticed I have been able to stand up for myself more frequently & assertively about what I want/need or don’t want.
@7Flowers1Dream Thanks so much for responding,I appreciate you. As Ghandi once said "You must be part of the change you want to see in your life..." I found this quote while playing Mahjong actually. You are taking your courage to better yourself. I applaud you. I went for 4 years twice a month 20 yrs ago. Understanding is half the battle. But now at 67,I do what I want, most times, cook what I want,do chores when I want. If my husband doesn't agree, well, he allows me wide range in everything( he even listens to BTS now too,and can name many of their songs!)...I don't worry about it anymore. It doesn't matter in the realm of things.Being good, kind and loving is the most important things to me now. Being " HAPPY ". What I strive for daily. Best of the best for you, truly. Like your name a lot!💜 Borahae 💜
SKY is like the Korean Ivy League universities from what I've read. Seoul National, Konkuk, and Yonsei. I'm also one of the Gifted Kid burnouts. I dropped out of school a year shy of finishing an accounting degree because I hated it desperately, but it was what my family wanted for me. There was no BTS back then to tell me it was OK to not make everybody else happy at my own expense.
If you will watch “The Rise of Bangtan” series (along with the deleted scenes and bonus clips) you will get a better understanding of what they are talking about here. It’s is explained well in the first (and maybe some in the second d) episode. Kids are under such pressure in S Korea to do well in school that they go to school all day and then instead of going home, having fun with friends, sports etc, many go to cram school for several more hours. They literally study like 10-14 hrs a day. Thus they have THE HIGHEST unaliving rate of 10-19 year olds in the WORLD. BTS is protesting against this and the fact that many kids aren’t allowed to live their own lives and follow their passions, etc. it’s all about studying for this one test that will determine what university you get to go to (if at all).
I wrote my comment before you watched the lyrics video, but I’m not going to delete it because the part about the series is so good. You should consider watching it. If you do watch, make sure you also watch the deleted scenes and bonus clip videos (if that episode has them. Almost all do).
I remember when I first was reading lyrics and kept feeling blown away by how much I related across cultures and languages The lyrics are what made me army tbh I think I only appreciate how daring their message was as a young powerless group in the industry more as the years go by too, like damn they really went for it
They are very good influences and good role models. Their songs discuss social issues, mental health, empowerment, self-love, etc. I'm 67, and I'm completely in love with them. RM's poetry, Suga's wisdom, J-Hope's energy, Jin's inner beauty, Jimin's ethereal being, Taehyung's unique personality, and Jungkook's all-genre voice... that list is just the beginning of praising them, I could write during an hour! hehehe Thanks for your reaction!
SKY is an unofficial grouping and acronym for the three most prestigious and academically competitive universities located in Seoul, South Korea{wiki description}.These are the universities Korean students usually kill to get into ,many have overworked themselves with many sadly taking their own lives . BTS are criticizing the education system and the brutal societal expectation that the students face when they are forced to get into these prestigious schools just for the name and bragging rights to their families disregarding the students mental health .Sadly in some case as mentioned in the lyrics "in Seoul to the SKY ,will parents really be happy" even after they have accomplished getting into these universities ,the hardships are not over in fact in some case they are far worse .Having to keep up and keep winning amongst the best . This has been a problem in SK for many many years hence the docu series ,yt vids and even dramas {SKY Castle as an example} that depict the severe reality of this issue
For these early mvs, the version posted to 1thek usually has the captions. It is an official version, it's a channel for multiple groups to post on when they're starting out to help widen their reach
Watch their older videos on the channel called “1theK”. That’s where all the official MVs were before there was ever a “Hybe Labels”. Those have the subtitles, and they’re still official MVs.
You could also watch In the soup or Bon Voyage instead of run BTS episodes. As much as I love all of their content, you do get to know their personalities by watching their travel/hanging out content. And they are so funny!
The SKY schools in South Korea are Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. The acronym "SKY" refers to the first letters of the names of these three prestigious universities.
