Miss the sea. At over 80 years old and handicap I am land locked. These videos help with memories and sometimes my Grandchildren learn a little about sailing. That is when they find time to watch a few minutes.

Hi, I'm also a seafarer, a naval electrician, and Cape Verde🇨🇻 is my country, and I'm also from the island of São Vicente where you received the bunker. I really liked your video and your comment about my country, it was also a shame you didn't dock at the pier, as I'm sure you would love it, the people are very friendly and welcoming

Cape Verde has changed so much for the better. When i sailed into Mindelo 35 years ago there was a red cross ship in the harbour, and the place was quite run down, the people were friendly mostly, but some of the "boat boys" on the beach could be aggressive. My last port of call before crossing the Atlantic and arriving in Martinique.

Chief - Really enjoy your videos. Good for you working on the masters degree. I'm a retired mechanical engineer who was a land lubber - but worked with/for one guy who graduated from the US Maritime Academy and thus had sea stories. I have two masters - one done in residence over two years, the other distance learning in the pre-internet days. I know how it can get hard at times, but keep with it. I'm sure you will as you are open enough in the videos I'm judging your life journey will include new changes and responsibilities. Keep up the good work and educating us - especially the ones who have never experienced the sea faring life.

Off of the subject of the video, just wanted to let you know of a ferry boat incident that occurred in Greece the other day. A passenger had disembarked from the ferry to retrieve an item on the dock. He barely made it on board by running up the vehicular ramp where he was greeted by two crew members. Video shows he was confronted in an unprofessional manner. He was eventually pushed off of the car ramp as the boat launched from the dock and into the water. Short order, he was dragged under and was hit by the prop killing him. From news reports the ship was halfway out the waterway of Piraeus when the captain was ordered back to port. The two "deck hands", first officer and Captain were detained. Not sure how the ferry was allowed to leave but probably another captain and first officer were pulled from another ship. Upon arrival to Heraklion Crete, passengers were further detained on board since protesters had gathered on the dock and were ready to storm the ship. It’s been reported the deck hands were being charged with murder and captain and first officer for dereliction of duty. Rules state here in Greece that the passenger walkways an car ramps must be fully retracted and secured before the vessel May move. In all the years I have lived here and all of the departures I have witnessed the ramps have never been stowed completely before the vessel departs. They can be several hundred meters out from the dock before the car ramp is fully secured. There is also an investigation underway as to why the coast guard who is responsible for safety issues of dockside incidents was not present when this happened. As for the vessel involved, it’s name is the BLUE HORIZON which is owned by ANEK Lines of Crete. There should be additional info on the internet.

I can't believe how much Sao Vincente has changed since HMS Minerva spent a few days there in 1970! Back then it was a small, isolated and very run down Portuguese colony. Wrecks littered the approaches to the harbour, water was scarce, and electrical supply sporadic. The people lived in poverty, in shacks. Only the governor's mansion had any real substance

@Chief Makoi Are cargo companies rolling out *Starlink satellite internet* yet? From the Starlink Maritime webpages, it appears ships have global coverage from Starlink, except when they are in harbours of countries where Starlink is not yet permitted -- which is only a couple of dozen countries. Starlink should be a boon to seafarers and ocean marine companies world-wide.

    • @Lost-In-Blank
      @Lost-In-Blank 9 місяців тому

It will make employee make moral higher and make recruitment much easier. As well, it allow video conferencing between ships and head office. From their website:
Global maritime coverage for boats of all sizes with up to 220 Mbps download while at sea.
Starting at $329/mo with a one-time hardware cost of $3,170.
I believe it comes with two ground station antennae, instead of the usual one, perhaps to allow for ships rolling.
You could start off it with being linked to wireless routers in the crew dining rooms and lounges. Providing wired LAN outlets in each office and stateroom will be the expensive part, but that can be delayed until later.
      * Coordinate downloading program and Windows Updates to one trusted computer and other computers get their updates from it.
      * Schedule your big mega creator uploads to run during the crews' busiest working hours, when not many people will be using the internet.

Here's the suggestion for you start link. Get a start link satellite network connection And a wireless router, you can then have good internet anywhere. And if your co-workers wanted to join in, they could pay a small fee to Car part of the cost.

Always love to see bunkering operations, often see them on cruise ships. Do you ever use Airalo for esim?. I use them, seems an inexpensive option instead of physical SIM cards.Unlock your phone and pay $4 for a week in a place like Norway, or England etc. Thanks Chief.

Port visits like that are pretty sad for me, it would be nice to get some liberty time, but oh well, atleast you got some phone service.

I would think that because Cape Verde is an island archipelago and everything must be imported that bunkering there would be more expensive than a mainland bunker.

Great video, Chief. Are your fuel prices fairly consistent around the globe, or are there any places where it is particularly expensive or less so?

Hi chief love to watch your videos. Good luck with your masters degree. Is there any chance of you making a video of how you arrive in port of how your anchor is deployed and retrieve. I would love see a video on the ship your on. All the best and keep posting more videos of sea fire.
