    The references aside from ones you know as follows:
    Moonlight Greatsword appears out of nowhere and Chosen undead picks it up into badass stance is reference to similar asspull of weapon into badass pose in another game Bloodborne which this scene directly repeats. The boss is Ludwig btw.
    Prepare to die bit is Dark souls' name for it's edition which is neat.
    The way Undead jumps in and catches the lightnings is similar to how some dragon does it in Elden Ring.
    Jank gag scene makes fun of both Skyrim stiff attack animations and dodgeroll's fast sudden animation.

    So to clarify the setup for the fight, it's a pure dark souls reference. The narration wasn't Dragonborn or the Chosen Undead, it was the primordial serpents from Dark Souls 1. There are two primordial serpents, one who wants somebody to link the First Flame and prolong the age of fire, and another who wants to let the fire die and beckon in an age ruled by the dark soul of man. Those two choices are a huge thematic component of the games, basically asking the player to make the choice at the end of the game whether to break the cycle or continue it.
    The implication here is that the serpents are responsible for tricking the two into fighting. One is driving the chosen undead to link the fire and continue the cycle, while the other has told the Dragonborn to end it by extinguishing the First Flame. Unfortunately the two primordial serpents have the same voice actor in the games, and so by staying true to that in the death battle the scenario is a bit unclear to those who don't know Dark Souls Lore. But it basically added a secret objective to the fight, since linking the fire will make it burn exponentially stronger and make destroying it all but impossible until it starts to run out of fuel again. Unless you're the dragonborn of course, since as the video established, he's well beyond the level of the gods of Dark Souls, whose life essence is used to fuel the First Flame.
    That's just what happens when you pit a series where the Gods are Real Shit up against one where the Gods are devastatingly fallible, I guess.

      @Lorekeeper72 Рік тому +10

      I think it also shows just how little the title of 'god' actually means in fantasy; whats a really powerful deity worthy of worship in one series is barely worth noticing in another. Honestly, thats why I thought this fight would go down the way it did; Elder Scrolls is just on a whole other level compared to Dark Souls. I did really love the conclusion that the Dovahkiin's arsenal wouldn't be able to keep the Chosen Undead from coming back but it didn't matter because the Chosen Undead would simply never be able to kill the Dovahkiin before losing himself; gives both characters their due and gives us a pretty cool fight.

    You have the gist if the ending rather on point
    The Chosen Undead eventually lost the will to try again and resorted to The First Flame to reach his end goal, in doing so he almost accomplished his goal by bringing The First Flame into the physical world as entailed in the first game, but the Fus Ro Dah literally extinguished the Flame and left nothing in it's wake. Without The First Flame though, the rest of the world will be plunged into darkness, which is why it looks confusing because it's a case of "I won, but at what cost?"

    My main problem with the fight was how limited the Dragonborn's arsenal was. That probably sounds silly as he was given a lot, but entire playstyles like Illusion, Conjuration and Alteration were barely used if at all. The Dragonborn has a skill where he can disarm a blocking enemy with a strong attack, so having the Chosen Undead block every single one of his attacks was a little disappointing. The Wabbajack is the most creative weapon possibly in the entirety of Death Battle and it got nothing. Auriel's Bow can essentially rain pieces of the magical realm (or, well, the sun, for simplicity's sake) onto his enemies. He can turn into a werewolf, a vampire lord or a dragon aspect. He can summon all kinds of freaky monsters and even tenticles from an eldritch realm. Not to mention, he can crouch and become invisible, or become ethereal, or bend the mind of his enemies.
    Essentially, reducing Dragonborn to mostly a weapons fighter was a shame as a huge Skyrim fan. There is so much more creatively that could be done with him that just wasn't. The shouts were used well, but that's about it.

  • @restless276
    @restless276 Рік тому +9

    just something that was wrong (which is fair cause they sound similar), the initial narration was from 2 POVs not 1, the initial part of "burn the age of humans to ash" is the Dragonborn stopping the Chosen One from prolonging the Age of Fire by linking the flame, the Chosen One is being told to stop Dragonborn from snuffing out the light, bringing on the Age of Dark, these 2 POVs are from the primordial serpents Kaathe and Frampt respectively (they get credited separately in the credits of the episode)
    I'm not the best at overall Dark Souls lore but from what I remember, the Age of Fire is the time of the gods where they rule the world, except they're kinda dicks and the world is already decaying in Dark Souls which is in the Age of Fire so it's not the best and being artificially prolonged by the First Flame.
    The Age of Dark is the age of man where humans may rise up to rule instead of the gods, but the world is shrouded in darkness and could be fucked anyways, as well as humanity being dicks instead of the gods. It's much less certain how the Age of Dark would be but it's not a definitive end of the world, there isn't really a correct answer to it and these ages are stuck in a cycle regardless.
    Probably won't matter in the long term not like they're ever gonna do a Dark Souls battle again but I think it's just good context for the episode and anyone who's interested.

    • @Lorekeeper72
      @Lorekeeper72 Рік тому

      To add to that context we have Dark Souls 3 where the constant relinking of the Flame has left the world in a real bad shape with basically everything being broken down and decrepit, even compared to how things looked in Dark Souls 1, and its pretty obvious linking the Flame again is the worst decision.

    • @cyberwolfy37
      @cyberwolfy37 Рік тому +8

      It doesn't work like that. The title of "lord of cinder" isn't a power up. It's a demotion, Gwyn was demoted from lord of sunlight to lord of cinder because he gave up all of his power to extend the age of fire. Becoming the soul of cinders wouldn't give him much of a power up since the soul of cinder in DS3 was accumulated over countless ages and countless lord of cinders. If he just do it now, he'll only gain the knowledge of Gwyn.

    • @lukasruston8618
      @lukasruston8618 Рік тому

      @@alexpineda5960 Only problem I have with the fight is that I'm not sure the Dragonborn would be able to do that, The First Flame created the Lord Souls which includes the Dark Soul which, in an incomplete state, was able to create a world within a painting and that painting could survive the collapse of the world around it... not to mention that those souls should lose their powers over time as Gwyn tried extending the life of the First Flame to keep the other Lord Souls and his age alive, so in a world without the First Flame, the Dark Souls power theoretically should've completely faded... yet it was able to survive throughout uncountable ages after the First Flame faded... basically what I'm saying is that the First Flame managed to create something that broke the laws of physics and it seems that the only thing that can kill it is a natural flow of time (not manipulated time either as timelines began to merge and shift because the First Flame was fading which should've impacted it if it was affected by that)

    This is easily my favorite episode of the season and if they can top it anytime soon then I'll be impressed. Analysis for both was great, but I definitely enjoyed Dragonborn's more. The matchup is pretty much perfect the new 3D team and they did an amazing job with the entire fight. On top of that it also has one of the best tracks in the series. Easily a 9/10 and it could probably go up to a 10 one day. I know you aren't reviewing Killua vs Misaka, but it was the next episode so I guess that's a perfect opportunity to talk about it. It was pretty good, definitely better than Deku vs Asta in terms of anime matchups I don't give a shit about, but definitely the worst of the season so far. The analysis segments actually engaged me unlike Asta's which I've seen probably 3 or 4 times but instantly forget everything that happens every time. I really loved this fight. I mean, I'm not an Elder Scrolls fan (though I do hope to play some games soon), but I am a huge Dark Souls fan. Dark Souls 1 is one of my favorite games of all time, top 2 at least. And I got honestly all the milage I needed out of this episode. Especially when it came to the references and setting.
    If you don't know, spoilers for the end of Dark Souls 1 but, the fight takes place at the Kiln of the First Flame, which is the final area of DS1 and where the CU and the Dragonborn fight is where you fight the final boss Gwyn. The fight seems to take place right as the game is originally about to end with you linking the First Flame. Now whats interesting is originally, you were to fight one more person before you truly ended the game, and that person was the NPC at the start of the game that saves you from the jail, Oscar. In early drafts of the first Dark Souls, Oscar was originally going to be a rival of sorts, and wt the end of the game, you were to fight him for who would be the one to link the Flame. But it was cut for understandable reasons and he now just dies at the start of the game. But I'd like to think that draft of the ending of the game is the inspiration for what the Dragonborn walking in to interrupt the linking kinda is. A little reference for those DS fans that are REALLY in the know.
    Another detail I love is that the voice who's egging on the Dragonborn is Kaathe, the second serpent that wants the Flame to die out. And the one whos egging on the CU is Frampt because he wants the flame to live on, which is pretty "canon".
    And theres a bunch of other things that I'm sure people have already told you in these comments lol. But those were two things i definitely wanted to point out. Amazing episode, S10 is off to an amazing start. I love this show.

    I get why people love it so much but personally, it's like...a 6/10. Least favourite of the season so far. Which goes to show how stacked S10 is so far in my opinion.

    There were literally just a few things wrong with death battles ending analysis on why the chosen undead lost. Every new character you make (while picking a class) has a brief history on what that class is capable of. Such as picking the knight class, as in if you pick that class you were literally a knight so I don't know how that translates into the chosen undead have less combat experience. Then they go on to say that dragonborn is faster because of the speed of his arrows while also saying the chosen undead can react to near light speed, last time I checked an arrow from a bow isnt your speed it's the speed of the arrow so I'm pretty sure this makes chosen undead faster by a large margin. Also there's physical strength, chosen undeads strength should have easily had him winning in the actual sword fighting sections. There's definitely a few more but I don't want this to get any longer so thanks for reading if you did

      There's other feats they didn't use and scaling chains that would've gotten to the same conclusion. It doesn't really change at all honestly.

    • @preachymink9468

      TLD is still massively stronger than TCU via feats and scaling due to the Dragonborn being a Shezzarine. For instance, characters of this Magnitude have Strength feats of Lifting Volendrung(Yes the Daedric relic) and throwing it ACROSS TAMRIEL. the Dwarven King in Question who accomplished this feat did so as wherever the Hammer landed would be where they settled down. He was in Morrowind at the time. Volendrung landed in the New Land of Volenfell. Aka Hammerfell. Said king wasn't a Shezzarine. You want another strength feat from an ACTUAL Shezzarine? How about Pelinel Whitestrake swinging his sword so hard and with so much strength he literally KNOCKED NIRN(y'know, the PLANET) OFF ITS AXIS.

    Even if I wasn’t an index fan I would STILL be excited about Killua vs Misaka. Because if Miles vs Static was already a great episode featuring Electric/Electromagnetic characters, then a character like Misaka (despite probably being weaker in power than Static) will take the Electromagnetic concept and crank it up to 20. If there’s a top 3 reps in fiction for Electromagnetism Misaka would be top 3 EZ because of how cool she makes it, being only beaten out by Static Shock and Cole Macgrath imo

    • @alexpineda5960

      Fair, I'm also cautiously excited, because considering Death Battle's track record when using slightly more niche anime characters, they have a tendency to butcher a character's personality, so while I think it could be good, I just hope we don't get Grey vs Esdeath 2... or Deku vs Asta 2... or Shadow vs Ryuko 2 (even though that one was still good.) Basically, while I'm excited, I'm worried they still might fuck it up.
