About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
Munkustrap being an exasperated theatre dad trying to manage all the kittens is adorable and hilarious.
I still havent figure out which Cat is reenacting the part of the Great Rumpus Cat. or is that the REAL Great Rumpus Cat?

If you subscribe to the idea that Munkustrap is Old Deuteronomy's son, then the whole number he seems like a young man trying so hard to impress his father, and getting stressed because everyone else is making a mess; meanwhile Old D's having a grand old time watching the youngsters have fun.

@@hanako-kun5480 There's a lot of fan theories going around about who is related to who, but as far as I know nothing is confirmed. The closest we get to a confirmation is Old Deuteronomy's actor saying that his character is probably the father to a good chunk of the cats.
Munkustrap after this part: "So my little brother ran around playing the bagpipes during my show again, so I'm starting a kickstarter to put him down. The benefit of killing him is being able to get through the show for dad for once-"

@Logan Underhill I'd argue that Robbie did a pretty good job with him, considering the writing and direction. He could have nailed it if it weren't for how bad the movie around him is. Though Michael's manic Dad energy and dramatic squats will always be the fave.

This song, "Jellicle Songs," and "Old Deuteronomy" are really where Munkustrap shines for me. Whenever he's presenting to the tribe (and the audience) he gets this certain stance, with his feet spread apart, chest out, shoulders back. It's exactly like a self-important tabby preening in the sun and I love Gruber for being able to do it in a way that conveys the character's grace and strength at once.

I just realized that Mungojerrie's "dog" costume is different from the other "dog" costumes. While everyother pollice costume is a shoebox for everything Mungojerrie's costume is Juice Boxes for his hands, a Shoe for his head and pin cushions on his feet. It's very Mungojerrie-like
Skimbleshanks and Mistoffelees have shoes on their heads too.
The best part is when Rum Tum Tugger shines with that Bagpipe solo!

Michael Gruber (Munkustrap)‘s voice is absolutely incredible. It’s got such an operatic quality despite basically just narrating. That and the fact that he’s one of the most feline like in his movements out of everyone - no wonder the role of Munkustrap usually goes to the best actor in the company. It’s such a deceptively difficult role.

What I like about this musical is you feel you are getting a glimpse into a secret "cat culture." The fact that things like the Heaviside Layer don't completely make sense just seems to show that it is something known only to cats and not fully understood by humans. The things they sing about are things you can imagine cats would talk about if they could, like their fur and hunting mice or the fact that they are not dogs. This story just sounds like the kind of thing a cat would love to hear: a bunch of silly dogs fighting, then being scared away by a single, all-powerful cat. They would be thinking, "Yeah, cats are so badass!"
Honestly that might just be one of the reasons i love this show. It feels like you just stumbled into a junkyard found a bunch of cats doing there thing. And then they decided to let you stay.
I love imagining this show is from the perspective of some drunk guy enamored with whatever the fuck these alley cats are doing
I know that the song is supposed to be a story but seeing Munkustrap done with everyone is literally me, Rum Tum Tugger playing those bagpipes, and mungojerrie messing up bark is so hilarious. Munkustrap is literally my spirit animal in this song

So they cast him and this dude had to memorize this song with perfect german pronunciation in a week and a half. Things you notice after watching way too much:
The youngest kittens (Victoria & Jemimah) watch with Old Deuteronomy for most of the "play" only showing up at the very end as poms.
Jennyanydots has to make Rumpleteazer go back and participate in the play after the "bark" mishap.
I noticed the part with Jennyanydots too! It's like:

When I was younger, I didn't really care for this piece as it was not melodic enough for my liking. But re-watching it now I think it is a beautiful mess. All the confusion, the annoyed Munkustrap, the confused Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer (until know I hadn't even realized it's them), and the overall nonsense going on in the background. Hilarious!

There were SO many disappointments in that movie. Difficult to pick one. This; Rum Tum Tugger's treatment; no duet between Munk and Tugger; the 2 "comedic actors (Rebel Wilson and James Corden) that they crammed down our throats (where's a barfing emote when you need one); what they did to Macavity... Do I need to go on??

I have seen this musical about 50 times now. Plus maybe another 10-20 times I've watched this video. And only JUST NOW did I notice, at about 0:17 Jemima goes to do a weird sideways somersault and ends up getting stuck on her back. I love all the little background things the characters do, I swear this has unlimited rewatch potential
