- In the remote tribal communities of eastern India, the sport of hockey thrives.
Tribal players excel at the game, helping India reclaim its place as a powerhouse of the sport.
After a four-decade Olympic medal drought, India returned to the podium at the Tokyo Games with the help of players like Amit Rohidas.
That victory reignited hopes that India could again rise to the top of the hockey world.
101 East reveals how hockey is changing the lives of India's tribal communities.

Bhai Quatar walo, India Ka gareebi like view karke maat dikha, bohu advance hockey facilities bhi hai... Waise bhi talent don't requires money
Amit’s Red card in the quarter final costed us the Gold Medal…
Yes Bro 😢
I am from Odisha and I am glad that our state is leading the front in this sports.
It's a good way to leverage the sporting talent at grassroot level.
As the govt has changed, now it's time to see whether the new govt will support hockey the same way BJD did!
You're right. Without the continued support of the Odisha government, Indian hockey would have gone into oblivion

Our honorable CM Naveen Patnaik has played a pivotal role in revival hockey and empowerment of tribal community through sports

They're as good as a great player in any American academy! We just need to support their infrastructure and village community programs in athletics and gymnastics also and also in each and every sport.

India's dominance in hockey ended with the introduction of artificial turf. It is heart warming to see the revival of the game, especially in tribal areas. I am sure Indian National team will do very well in 2024 Paris Olympics. All the best. Excellent video.
It began well before astro turf. 1972 Munich was played on grass, as was the 1982 World Cup (where India finished 5th) in Bombay. It's true, though, that artificial turf gives affluent "white" countries a big advantage.

Tribals love their sports hockey in this area despite their poverty and they have been playing it without much support from goverment. Their stories here show how they need to be constantly encouraged. Great documentary.
There is now support from the government! That's what the documentary showed.

Indian tribals need more protection from bad eyes of own countrymen who have their prying eyes on our ancestral land for their own selfish profit for which they have been destroying our lives and culture. For us they have always been the foreigners.

Kassi tournament famous for football matches also in Jharkhand.
It's gone, replaced with T20 cricket tournament. Not much happening these days. Back in 2000 players use to get 500 or 1000 for playing a match and winners get coconut ,money, goat & chicken .
Great to see Al Jazeera posting real story about India...
Al Jazeera showing positive stories from remote Odisha but without propaganda? IMPOSSIBLE.
22:05 For Non-Odia viewers, 'Khasi' in Odia means a Goat for mutton. Unlike in Europe where lamb is more common for meat, in Odisha, Goat is preferred over sheep. It's called the 'Khasi Tournament' because the winner gets goats for mutton. 'Khasi Mansa' is a popular dish in Odisha.
What Al Jazeera Missed:
1. Al Jazeera should have also talked about Dilpeep Tirkey and William Xalco who are national heroes and belong to tribal communities of Odisha. Dileep Tirkey captained the Indian hockey team. At least they covered Amit Rohidas!
2. Al Jazeera didn't talk about the initiatives of ex-Odisha CM Naveen Pattanaik who was a Hockey goalkeeper himself. It is because of his initiatives that hockey revived in India. Odisha is sponsoring Hockey India till 2036. 3 of the last 4 Hockey World Cups have been held in Odisha.
Conclusion:
The introduction of astroturf in the 1970s, the lack of astroturf infrastructure in India, and corruption killed Indian hockey after 1980. India could have won a GOLD in the 2024 Paris Olympics. We had to settle for Bronze. Next time GOLD!

When the sport of Hockey has no problem from where the player comes. In Cricket, discrimination is very much common among its own national players. State, region, caste and language are some of the main reasons. When Hockey gave India a wall from the small state of Kerela, ... BCCI is still very much reluctant to give players from Kerela the same oppotunity. Very sad, how money changes even a sport. Humans are beyond help.
