@@Thercgeek I love your films and you are really love flying a rc airplane. I am about making a rc glider and your setting process very helpful . I love glider so much and so nice to follow your nice fipms from Taiwan and thanks of you, Mister.
I've been flying my TH ASW 28 over the past year - Flys Great, plenty powerful, and thermal capable. Just a Joy to fly. Excellent build quality. Glad you recorded the off-power fly-bys. So Cool.
That's a nice looking sailplane! Love scale gliders. My buddy and myself get on a glider kick ever so often, and we love towing each other up with a Super Cub or Decathlon. 100 ft tow line is just about perfect. You're right about the thermals Chris, as it's a blast to find them and spiral up. Great video as always!! Nice to see Tower putting out models as well.
That's my division of the hobby, thermo duration. Either bungee, winch, self power, or tow plane launch. You can droop the ailerons and flaps a few degrees to change the airfoil and increase climb rate in lift. And of course there's always the tie-breaking spot landing on a graduated target tape. That particular design (large wing area elliptical planform 2M) looks well dialed in for good performance. Yeah, I diggin' that plane alot. I should get one. Thanks for doing a video on it.
Very cool! The precision sailplane competitions are no joke. That’s some serious flying and extremely challenging. My father in law was big in thermal duration for a while.
No better way to perfect your skills in managing the energy of any aircraft than by flying sailplanes/gliders. You are doing yourself a dis-service if you don't have one in your fleet. Thanks Chris!!!
Hey Chris! I was just getting back into the hobby after a 2 year break and I was wondering if you can use a 3s 2200 or even maybe a 3s 1300, just to get it up to altitude and glide the rest of the way down. I know since its a 40a ESC, a 1300 may be to low and maybe even 3s is to low to.
Just got this ! Gonna be setting it up with ELRS receiver for $13 amazing how the elrs stuff just killed all competition lol… so cheap and rock solid and full telemetry too!
Yes, the there’s a brake engaged on the motor which stops it and the prop folds back. I wonder if who you saw break the prop had the motor running when he landed it. Or didn’t throttle back the motor soon enough before touchdown.
Hi Chris , I love watching your model reviews you give the engineering description which is the information I like . I am very interested in the process of how you go about determine the control rates and expo if required and all the radio set up , could I ask if you could do a presentation on a model and show us your method please . Great channel, cheers mate
Thanks for the suggestion! Ultimately the rates I settle on are based on my personal preference of the desired feel I’m looking for from the model. It’s all about personal preference. Some like a little more sensitivity and some like less and so tune their rates accordingly.
You know, I haven’t flown many gliders, so can’t really compare to those unfortunately. I’ve really been enjoying flying them more though, they’re super fun!
I'm assuming there's no Remote ID or you would have mentioned it. I'm really interested in how this will all play out now that the deadline for manufacturers to include Remote ID has passed. I understand that planes/drones made before December 2022 don't require manufactured Remote ID in their UA, but eventually they will run out ot those and have to make more that require it "built in", and I'm really waiting for all this to play out with Tower, Hobby King, and Horizen.
We’ll see how it goes. Ultimately if you’re flying in a FRIA (your local club field), it will be much less of an issue. At least as it’s currently written.
@@Thercgeek It actually does not matter whether flying in a FRIA or not, as the requirement by the FAA requires ALL aircraft, kit or ready to fly, manufactured after 12/22 to have Remote ID built in by the manufacturer. FRIAs will be the only place you can fly prior non-Remote ID aircraft should you wish to fly after 09/23, but UA manufactured after 12/22 will have Remote ID built in and cannot be turned off even if flying in a FRIA.
I don’t know then. I’d expect we’ll see if after the compliance date. The FAA threw out their date without much consideration for manufacturers having to develop the technology for it.
Great review on a nice looking new offering from Tower Hobbies. How can I get one of those surface throw gauges you used in the review? Looks easier to use than the one I have. Thanks.
Fms asw definitely works! Since horizon owns tower as of a few years ago, unfortunately it’s not much of their focus. Tower had some awesome brands that are no longer available. 😕
Love a glider. That’s a nice ship! Considering your clout within the hobby, do you have any insight as to why we aren’t seeing the quality balsa warbirds from hangar 9 or topflite anymore? The top flite hellcat or the hangar 9 bf 109 were great birds. Seems like foam is the de facto offering for the foreseeable future. I’m hoping you may have some insight otherwise. Have a great weekend Chris.
I think at the end of the day, foam is less expensive to manufacture. Wood arfs require skilled labor to physically build each aircraft from a stack of parts. They’re designed with mass production in mind, but it’s still quite labor intensive. The foam airframes start out much more prefabricated since the parts are injection molded so the assembly time is reduced significantly. Truthfully, I do prefer wood and composite airframes myself, but the foam airframes have gotten pretty darn good these days.
Yeah, most airplanes don’t need a gyro IMO. Only one have I experienced where it did help tame some of the unique characteristics the airplane had which were a result of the configuration.
@@patrickhoyle8357 Of course, but in fact this is a powered motor glider. One could also say that a disfunctional helicopter is a glider because it can still land using autogyration.
@@paulbrouyere1735 I know nada about heli's but think autogiration is unsustainable and just slows the inevitable. So, I have to disagree . Helis don't really want to fly

Hey John, you think it will be a good thermal glider? seems to be a heavy bird for its size
I definitely think it’ll thermal when there’s thermal activity.

Super nice demo of the flight characteristics. Nothing beats that whistle when they float by either!
Couldn't agree more!
I was waiting for a slow flying video but you flew this glider like a jet
Every video is surpris I love it

I haven’t flown that one, so I can’t really say. Honestly, I haven’t flown much in the way of sailplanes.

Nice!
Nice demo in your shop and at the field. Hi from Detroit. 👍
Are all the hinges CA type? Are there any mechanical hinges in the air frame?
The model uses plastic pin type hinges.
Dang...thats sweet!
It’s super fun
good candidate for FPV system!
I think so too!
Curious to know if the propellor folds back automatically when turned off. I saw a guy break them off while landing.

Chris, in describing the CG location, you mentioned "hunting around during a power off dive". What do you mean by "hunting around"?
What I mean is if the model doesn’t feel locked in in the dive, then the cg probably needs to come forward.
Awesome flying, question from a newb: can I replace the electric motor with a 10-30cc gasser?
That might be a bit too much for the airframe honestly.
If you have a scale is the 1800g weight on the spec sheet correct?
That’s pretty close, yeah. I weighed it at about 60oz without battery.
I love gliders, I have the 1400mm sky surfer and the 2400 super sky surfer. Have you ever flown one? Of so, is there a big difference?

Thing rips. Stupid question, are you setting it up as Acro or sail in your transmitter? Not sure it makes a difference
I set it up on acro. I think that’s necessary since it has a throttle-able motor.
Battery 3s or 4s
4s (also mentioned in the vid description)
pricey and heavy model
If an aircraft is well designed it dosen't need as3x or stuff like that.... only needed when the engineers 💩ed....
Yeah, most airplanes don’t need a gyro IMO. Only one have I experienced where it did help tame some of the unique characteristics the airplane had which were a result of the configuration.
Soooo quiet ........
Such a beautiful sound as it flies by. 😎
You fly it like an airplane not s sailplane. All wrong!
Haha
I’m sorry to say but this is not really a glider. And I would prefer to land it on grass.
Right, technically a sailplane (Was trying to keep the character count reasonable). Grass shouldn’t be a problem at all.
All aeroplanes glide, even the great lump of the space shuttle. The motor is just to keep them up there a bit longer
