He says all that, but neglects to mention the good thing about the Tories: that they have nice posh accents.

As a lifelong Labour voter I am already concerned with what is being said by this new government. The poor and vulnerable in society are already being targeted in the language being used.
The Tories were vile, corrupt, arrogant liars but my hope that this lot will be different is pretty low. I hope I am proved wrong

Thank God Labour will be totally different and the UK can recover from stuffed shirts, controlled indirectly by financial interests, trashing a thousand year old culture for the whims of megalomaniac ideologues.
    Everything will be ok

First one would need to admit Britain was a better country in the 1990s

    • @shivtaan5072

Was it tho? Maybe the late 90s but the state of the country improved just after the millennium.

@@shivtaan5072 No it didn't. It started declining from about 2002 onwards
      Debt to GDP 2001 28.1%

      Debt to GDP 2015 81.3%

Ok, but that's just one metric. You didn't specify in your OP that that's what you were focusing on. I think I was thinking more about other things like the NHS, education and other public services which all improved. Obviously there was the increase in the surveillance state too which is a negative, but overall I think life was better for people after 1997 than before.
And I also don't think the increase in national debt negatively affected how people felt at the time. It was due to increased borrowing that a lot of life improved. Plus the war in Iraq n Afghanistan was being paid for.

    • @shivtaan5072

I also meant up to 2008. That was when the crash happened and after that the Tories came in and ruined everything and borrowed excessively.

    • @Witchfinder.General
      @Witchfinder.General 3 місяці тому +2

@@shivtaan5072 The country began it's current decline in about 2002, at that point GDP per capita was slightly higher than the USA. I agree government debt is bad, which begs the question why labour accuse the tories of 'austerity' for only borrowing £120bn every year and claim they should have borrowed more. During the 1980s Margret Thatcher's government was actually paying back money that had been borrowed in the 1970s - It's not ideal and services had to be cut - but that's the consequence of government debt - future generations are forced to suffer for the borrowing of today. Now successive governments have put the country into a debt spiral from which it will never recover, and it started in 2002, not 2008

@@Scoop777 No, Labour were always going to make an even bigger mess if they ever got in... And now they're here. Get ready for road user charging, mandatory ID cards, high taxes (that will effect the working class the most), cost of living crisis perpetuation, speech laws, higher crime rates, completely unaffordable housing, job losses, the stealth un-doing of Brexit (which after eight years, still hasn't been done), higher national debt, privatisation of parts of the NHS (exactly what Blair did), mass illegal immigration, the end of private schools, I could keep going but I'm getting bored.
I have no simpathy for the Tories, they got exactly what they deserved. They had an 80 seat majority, and more then enough chances over 14 years but they blew everything. It would be very naive to think that Labour will improve anything in this country, especially under such a weak, flip-flopping, WEF puppet for a leader, like Starmer. God help us all.

@@Scoop777 Oh I agree without a doubt but the days of Labour truth and morals and integrity went - probably before I was born in 1951 At the moment I do not think any of them truly give any hope. Just look at what Starmer had done - he has already called back a stack of oldies- even non-MP's as the new Labour pot is empty of any good.

Britain was a better country in 2010 than 2024, but it was also a better country in 1997 than 2010. Both parties have ruined Britain
