  • Thanks to a historic $5 million commitment from a former Rice women's basketball player, Rice will expand its opportunities for female student-athletes by introducing women's golf to the Owls' list of intercollegiate sports beginning with the 2026-27 academic year.
Rice Vice President and Director of Athletics Tommy McClelland announced on Friday that Lynn Laverty Elsenhans, and her husband, John, have endowed Rice Athletics with one of the largest gifts by any former female student-athlete to offer future generations of competitive women golfers the opportunity to attend Rice and compete for the Owls.

The comment "this makes the most sense" is a slap to face to women, at Rice University, by Tommy McClelland the Vice President of Rice. I would love to know the exact date when you and your President, Reginald Desroaches, realized that it "made sense"? Rice is the last Div I university to get a women's golf team is ridiculous.
Rice University, with all their TV money and uniform money and donations which adds up to hundred of millions of dollars over the years, could not afford 5 million to start up Womens Golf??? It took an individual's donation the get Womens Golf started a major university??? Is that what made it sensible??? Tommy needs a better PR division....it is evident that Tommy should NOT be speaking on his own. Ridiculous, this whole situation.
