Chobe, Savuti and Khwai 2021: Episode 6 - Camping at Magotho in Khwai PART 2

- In September 2021, we embarked on a 24 day overlanding trip through Botswana!
In this episode, we stay at Magotho Camp in Khwai, which is run by the Khwai Community Trust. Magotho is very rustic with the bare minimum facilities and you need to be self sufficient to comfortably stay here.
Khwai Concession is situated between the Chobe and Moremi reserves, and therefore there are no park fees payable to stay in this area.
In saying that, it is one of the most wild, scenic and immersive wilderness experience we have ever had. Wildlife is abundant and there is never a boring drive. We have had lion, hyena, leopard, wild dog, honey badger and more RIGHT in our campsite.
Check out our video and feel free to ask more questions about the incredible Khwai area of Botswana in the comments!
Nice video guys. Going to have to start at the beginning o this series. Love videos with details.
Awesome! Thank you!

@@dips4679 No place like Africa and Botswana is a special place indeed!
Epic!!! That ndlovu sighting was amazing. Thanks again.
Thank you, very lucky and special to be out there with them 🐘
Great episode. Was engaging all the way, that yellow number plate is from Windhoek, Namibia 🇳🇦.
Thank you very much really glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Another awesome episode. Thanks for sharing. Will be there in August. Can’t wait.
Thanks Bruce 🙌🏻 we lucky enough to be back there next week 😀
@@EpicAfrica sorry I couldn’t make it 😂 I need to ask one favour. Please try find out how many schools are up there in the area if possible and let me know.
Have a great trip
No problem I’ll chat to the locals and let you know.
@@EpicAfrica thanks so much. Will explain why off line sometime
Hi great content!
Thanks very much!
Absolutely epic..if i may ask how does one gets hold of the Epic Africa caps merchandise
Message us on Instagram ;) we will hook you up!
Thank you for the videos. Enjoying them. You mention filling up on drinking water in Maun at Oasis. Where/What is Oasis? I did a Google search and couldn't find it. Will probably do a stop at Crocodile Camp in Maun before heading to Third Bridge, Xakanaxa, Magotho, Savuti and Ihaha. So, want to fill tanks up with drinking water in Maun before heading out.
Thank you for watching! Yes we even had a hard time finding it this time round. Ill try find it for you on Google and come back and post it here.
Wow what a beautiful experience! 🤌🏾
Thank you!
Nice one Jason, great episode!
Thanks very much 🙌🏻
Great footage guys! Does one book these Kwai Community sites (Magotho & Maudi) via FB or can one just arrive?
Thanks so much! For maudi you can book directly and they are on FB. Magotho you need to contact their office which can be different at time so it would be worth while doing your bookings with Utimate Routes, that’s who we use.
Great Episode!!!! 🤩
Thanks very much mate :)
Nice one. Khwai is the place.
It really is!
Hi Epic Africa, what an awesome Water crossing Khwai episode. Thanks. Any general advise on Water crossing in Moremi?
Best General Advice is if you won’t walk it. Don’t drive it!
Epic video mate. How many days did you stay in the Khwai, Mogotho, and Savuti areas? How much fuel did you carry to get you through Khwai, Mogotoho, Savutiand Chobe? Did you boil the water after you used the in-line filter? Look forward to your next video.
Thanks! We stayed in Chobe (Ihaha camp) 5 nights, Savuti 2 nights, Mahotho Khwai 6 nights. We carried 40l of fuel but did not use it - we filled up at Muchenje and we have a long range tank. We did not boil the water but we do throw in purification tablets or Milton, this is for bathing or washing up only, not drinking.
@@EpicAfrica Thanks for taking the time to respond, appreciate it. We (from Australia) have planned a similar trip for September this year but in the reverse direction. Were you able to buy Milton in Botswana? I noticed your videos are crisp and sharp and sound it pretty good. Would you mind sharing your equipment details? Take care, and look forward to Tulli.
Hey Quentin, enjoy your trip, you are going to be blown away! I think you can get Milton liquid in Botswana, usually in the pharmacy or baby section as it is used to sterilise baby bottles. We do not drink the water, but in Maun you can go to Oasis and fill up on drinking water! We used a Canon R5 with RF100-500mm zoom lens mainly for wildlife. Then we use a RF24-105mm around the camp. Also use a GoPro Hero 9. Then we use Rode microphones.
Mate, really appreciate all the information you have been willing to share. I am sure our trip will be 'epic' but that is due to you sharing your experience Take care and keep creating the content of your amazing adventures.
Great video - do you know if this area is accessible in December / January or is it going to be too wet?
I think it would be quite wet but it depends when the rains come. Best bet is to go in dry seasons from May - October is great
How old were your children when you first started camping and spending time in the bush? What would you say is the most important to have with you when camping with young children and how do you keep them entertained when on long game drives?
Our first real overlanding trip was in 2018 and it was just over 3 weeks long. Ava was 4 and Alexa was 3 months old. I would say a well stocked medical box is important, with meds for everything including a dry antibiotic. They love game drives but they have iPads with educational games and some movies downloaded offline. They also have colouring books, some toys, lots of snacks and we try to stop often to let them stretch legs
Please tell what cameras you are using im in the market for an upgrade
I am using the Canon R5 with a RF 100-500
Can you give details about the campsite you showed around the 18 minutes mark
That was Mbudi Campsite, we stayed there this year and its great. Link to their FB page below.
