32:18 oh, I actually read it as "listens to a fortune teller", which interacts with quite a few things on here. them telling fortunes does have interesting interactions on their musician role, though
My first thought for the word that the musician wants to keep secret is that it’s the true name of the future or the true name of prophecy, or something like that, and knowing that word is too powerful so the character wants to keep it secret so no one can abuse it. As for how they discovered that name I don’t know so it would have to be thought upon more.
That was my first thought too, straying to the true name territory. I guess we will see what shakes out when we define the magic system at more depth :)
im very interested to see how you take the fortune telling. divination is done in so many ways from decks to bibliomancy and the way it’s done can add so much to the world!
4:30 maybe the journalist could work for the merchant class and the nobility? those are pretty much garantied to be litterate after all. however, the question of the inventionof printing complicates things. can journalism really exist if each copy has to be done by hand?
I think I'm pretty much taking it as read that the printing press and a literate public are in play. Which is very different from worlds and stories we have seen in the past. When we loop back to the culture of The State in more detail I'm looking forward to working out the flow-on affects.
