It’s been a good while since we’ve done an update on the flower horn cichlid. Unfortunately, several months back he was suffering from internal parasites, which made him stop eating, thus losing a lot of weight. His “horn” started to shrink quickly, which alarmed me because much like how a gecko stores fat in its tail, this fish does it in the “horn” above its head. Once that’s all gone, that’s pretty much the end. So we got some tablets from the fish shop, which thankfully helped! He has recovered and is back to his active self.. despite his body colors - That’s still messed up, unfortunately.

You've no idea how much of a daunting task that is when cleaning an aquarium. He already said that he should have let go of it halfway. Admitting his mistake of inhaling too long on the hose. I used to own and care for a Golden Eye Arowana and she died at 10 years of age. I was 5 when we got her. So doing that method you're saying is a no-no for big tanks.
Just a quick tip! Do not wash your sponges, they should only be cleaned about once a year because they hold precious bacteria that are good for the water quality and your fish!
There are special white puffy sponges that are made for catching the dirt, these are the only ones you can clean as much as you like.
This is so sad, who else remembers when he unboxed the little guy :(

You know, every time you wash out your filter and sponges with tap water you kill off any beneficial bacteria you may have had to keep the fish healthy. Just squeeze out the sponges a couple of times with the water you are sucking out of the aquarium and rinse the filter housing out if necessary with the same water. You should do this once a month to clean the filter, not every week. Also make sure the water you are replacing is the same temp as the water you took out of the tank.

I have flowerhorn and doing big water changes is not good for them. They actually thrive in clear green “algae” water. The most I take out is only like 4 inches of water. I just wanted to let you know my success and I hope everything is going great for him.

He doesn't listen to husbandry advice. He's been getting told since he bought the fish. Ignored it all and ended up with a sick animal. His tarantula husbandry isn't much better they're just that much hardier so he gets away with it.

To each their own and if works for you that’s great but from what I know that’s not the proper way to do a water change. You should do frequent partial water changes and not all the water at once and by washing your filters out like that you are getting rid of all your necessary beneficial bacteria. I was always taught to do one or the other at a time. So do the filter one day wait a few days then do the tank water so your tank can properly cycle.

That’s probably another reason as to why it lost its color also. Poor water condition and stress will cause them to lose their color just like disease/sickness and parasites. Changing water like that is just a shock to the poor fish temperature and water parameter wise. I was always told a good rule of thumb is 10-15% water change weekly depending on the bio-load.
@@MastaT_150 i feel like Exotics is a bit impulsive. I can tell he cares about his animals but with all the creatures he cares for atm, i start to notice some of them don't have proper care. That Flowerhorn definitely needs a bigger tank. Some of his tarantulas might need to lay low on the crickets. I have hope though that he'll listen to us commenters and be an even better caretaker

I don’t like to be the type of person who thinks they know it all and act like some kind of professional in the comments but when you have such a large impressionable audience it’s important to do things as proper as can be. I would think water changes fall under basic fish keeping 101. He also could use a bigger tank. That is one of the concerns with pet tubers, they get too many animals and don’t concentrate on giving the ones they have the best care. I also don’t doubt his love for his animals and have hope that he does take from the comments.

it's an actual problem, internal parasites will make the flowerhorn fish to not eat which means if he did not eat enough he will die
But thank god the tablets saved him
You should never change the water like that. You should change a little bit every week and you never change the water and your filter media at the same time. You are getting rid of all the beneficial bacteria. You are just shocking your fish, it needs to slowly acclimate to temperature changes and different water parameters like PH.

Actually flower horn don't need much decorations because they are too aggressive, they may attack or swallow the decorations (I remember someone in the comment section stated this)

It’s actually kinda decently priced if you live and work in the Philippines I think, but if you convert the peso prices to US dollars it’s really cheap bc US dollars are worth more than pesos and yadadada . Also the entire country kinda cheap... even tho there’s extreme proverty.

If you have issues with your flowerhorn, or want to know more, send a message to Joey (The King of DIY). He is very knowledgeable about freshwater fish.
Also change less of your water each time, and unless the filters water flow gets reduced leave your sponges in the filter, otherwise you could get an ammonia build up and that will burn and possibly kill the fish.
This is the only best channel I enjoy watching and it makes me smart around my friends

I bought goldfish from Walmart regularly as a kid and we out them in a large enclosure and they got bigger than this one in no time.

The flowerhorn’s color will return. I’ve had fish that lost their color because they didnt want to eat, but when they started eating again the color came back.
I was wondering whether you could put some plants or underwater objects in to brighten his tank or some aquarium wall paper on the tank he looks lonely?
SAM TREADS this type of fish will hurt himself on the objects or plants in the water. I believe they try to fight it and it stresses them out. That’s why whenever you see this type of fish, they’re usually alone with nothing. Which they prefer! 😊
Wallpaper would be probably the only thing exotic can put on the tank. Flowerhorns either tear up plants or hurt themselves on rocks or branches.
They are also VERY agressive, they cannot be housed with other fish

I have many years of experience with aquarium.
You should not change 100% of your water like that (or very rearly), you need to keep a bio chimical equilibrium and for that, you need a good colony of healthy bacteria inside the ceramic inside your filter and on your substrate.
And don't wash like this your filter material, this kill the good bacteria.!

Don't worry, flowerhorns are really territorial and aggressive, decorations in tanks with them will usually be attacked and can often hurt the fish. It's better to give them a plain tank
I love it when people complain about the set up for an animal they know nothing about. They just feel like it’s right. It just doesn’t make sense to complain that something could be better when you don’t know the first thing about the animal to begin with. How would you know anything unless you know how to care for the animal in question? And no feelings don’t count
@@bennu547 flowerhorn indeed need enrichment like a floating ball or things that can't harm him .. as a betta can get depressed in a plain bowl and a gold fish have a memory of at least 5 month I'm sure this big guy must be bored af. his tank must be changed because of how big he grew he barely have space and yeah enrichment doesn't kill them

Try putting some water in the middle on the hose then press both holes and put the other end of the hose in the tank so you dont need to suck it

Dang. I remember the unboxing. They sure grow up fast! Shame about the parasites but at least its recovering. Probably best to stick with bloodworms, shrimp or scallops for the big guy. Crickets were never a good idea. What little coloring is left sure looks pretty. Hope it comes back but even still its a cool fish regardless. I hope to get a flowerhorn some day.-along with a hundred other things lol

I would recommend changing your filter to either canister filters or overhead filters. They won't clog easily and you can add different types of filter media (bio rings) where beneficial bacteria can grow.

A way to get the water out without sucking it, is putting waterfrom the faucet in the hose while one end is in the aquarium. Make sure the hose is running water into the aquarium from the hose and faucet before putting it into the sink.
I have to say, they actually look kinda cooler with only a small section really bright!

You should get a hose we’re you can squeeze a little thing, I guess and it makes a suction. My dad has one and it’s super helpful when you need to take the water out.
