    The reason the Viper came to be was because Bob Lutz, who was vice chairman of Chrysler at the time, owned an unmarked Cobra replica and he loved it so much that he convinced Lee Iacocca that they should make their own version of a Shelby Cobra.

    The reputation early Vipers have for being big brutal muscle cars with no cornering ability or finesse is largely overstated. When new these would pull .95+ g on a skidpad, even higher with modern rubber and shocks. That's still a lot of grip for a street car. They are also about the same size as a Porsche 991 despite the cartoon proportions.
    What they WILL do is scare the life out of anyone who hasn't pushed a pre-00s performance car beyond safe and legal limits. No ABS, no traction control, no stability control, nothing to bail you out if you're careless. These cars are meant to thrill, not coddle.
    Also, this is making about 410-420 HP *at the wheels.* Crank HP for this generation (96-02) was 450-460, only the early RTs (91-95) were making 400-415 at the crank.

      Contrary to popular perception, Gen 2 vipers were not only GTS’s.
      Gen 1s were all RT/10’s.
      Gen 2 had both although the RT/10 had a weird “Gen 1.5” as many people like to call it in 1996/7.
      You can tell the RT in the video falls in that catergory as it has the smooth hood, interior and dual throttle cables of a Gen 1 but has the exhaust and wheels of the Gen 2.
      Also why the RT gets a bad rap for being lower powered because everybody thinks of the Gen 1 when they think RT which had 400hp, when in reality all Gen 2s, GTS and RT/10 got the 450 engine in 1997.

    Fun fact: before being aquired by Ford in 1998, Volvo was working with Cosworth on a new 4.3 liter V10 engine to be mated to a proprietary 5 speed automatic transmission. The drivetrain would be mounted transversely in the front of the new P2 based S80 sedan. The idea was nixxed when Ford management took over but not before a prototype was installed in a Volvo 850. This means somewhere around Gothenburg Sweden, in some dimly lit garage a V10 850 is waiting…

    Regarding the speed limit, it looks like (most of) this film was shot on Forks of The Credit Road about 40 minutes north of Toronto, and near where I grew up. This is an extremely popular road for motorbikes and weekend drivers, especially in the autumn when the leaves are stunning. It's also popular with young idiots whose driving skills are better suited to wide straight highways. There have been some horrific accidents on this road, and that combined with the fact that the shoulders are often full of parked cars and hikers makes the low limit very sensible. In general the speed limit on country roads is 80 kM/h (50 MPH) which another poster pointed out is viewed by locals as a suggestion anyway; Nearby (wide, straight) highway #10 has an 80 kM/h limit but traffic regularly moves at around 120 (74 MPH)

    • @superspeeder
      @superspeeder 2 роки тому +3

      As a guy who grew up East of Toronto it saddens me to travel back home, to be stuck driving on backroads that were 80 km/hr back then and are now 50 km/hr. There may be the odd stretch of road where this makes sense (as you've pointed out), but the lowering of speed limits of rural roads in the GTA truly is pathetic. Higher speeding fines is the only logical explanation as most of these roads are no more populated than they were 30 years ago and all houses are built far back with long driveways. It's fun to go home for a visit now and then, but am I ever glad I don't have to drive there on a regular basis anymore.

    That's not really accurate - Dodge had already been working on the V10 for the Ram pickup, so when the Viper was being developed, they had Lambo (because Chrysler owned Lambo at that time) refine the heads to flow better and be cast from aluminum.

  • @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney

    The truck V10 isn’t anything like the Viper engine. The truck motor is, as you said, a stretched 5.9/360, the Viper engine has an aluminum block and heads, high-zoot internals (I think all forged, but I could be wrong) and induction parts and head design (maybe other stuff) developed in partnership with Lamborghini. They share bore centers and that’s pretty much all.
    Also, I’m almost certain it’s ‘rapid transit’, not transport.

    Mike, next trip to Canada come to Alberta, 3373 KM west of where you were - speed limits are 100 on side roads - but they are nice and straight - with great visibility - JUST in case crime ( speeding) happens !!

    The way you described the dual cam profiles sounded a lot like VTEC.

    I have a Gen3 viper and it is a beast. Only one thing I don’t like is it is a rough ride-suspension is too stiff. So much weight is up front leaving the rear bouncing with every bump in the road.

    V10, manual trans, rear wheel drive - what more do you need? Well, call me soft, but I do think windows that roll up and down should be standard on a road car. Don't need to be electric; just up and down would be nice.

    I like the standard British / European looking down the nose at pushrod engines, "old tech even in the 90s". Errm, heard of the GM LS? Even the latest generation Corvette has pushrods, it really isn't uncommon over there.

    • @InputArchive
      @InputArchive 2 роки тому +1

      Still doesn’t change the fact it’s old tech no matter how many American cars use them. By that logic, does that mean leaf springs weren’t old tech because a lot of American cars were still using them up into the 2010’s?

    • @smokeymotorsport
      @smokeymotorsport 2 роки тому

      @@InputArchive Not saying it's not old tech, I mean the wheel isn't exactly a new concept after all. My point was more that it's not a special case at all, it's not like it's freakish. It does also allow for much more easily removed/fettled heads and lower weight distribution for big valve engines so it's still valid

    • @MrColandrin
      @MrColandrin 2 роки тому

      @@smokeymotorsport To be honest, the dodge V10 is the only V10 I can think of having pushrods and it's probably the only Supercar that still had pushrods at that level of performance. (In my point of view, the Corvettes are sportscars, not Supercars). European supercars are much more about high reving engines which cannot be done with pushrods

    Back from an era where displacement mattered. Nowadays you can get big power from any displacement or number of cylinders. But back then, the naturally aspirated V10 and V12 cars dominated. There is a lot to be had had for na torque vs forced induction torque though. Big naturally aspirated torque is a hole different ball game to forced induction torque. One is the real deal, the other is more of a cheat code. Mercedes had a 7.3L V12 and Dodge had an 8.4L V10. Bigger turbo's?? No, no, more displacement!

    The simple answer is that you're _NOT_ supposed to have any fun. Welcome on Ontario - fabulous scenery, some pretty nice roads, and yet still a horrible place to own a car.

    that description of the engine development reminds me of the people who thought the V10 used in the HD trucks (not the SRT10) was the same as the viper just because it was also a 8 liter v10. Also that "muscle car" held track records all over the world for years.

    The reason they went with the V10? The Magnum 5.9L V8 of the time was a hot pile of garbage, not powerful whatsoever. So they got the Magnum V10 out of the Ram, gave it to Lamborghini (Chrysler owned them at the time), and said, "Make it perform like nothing else." Lamborghini took the design, made it aluminum block, strengthened some parts, gave it the iconic Lamborghini-style dual intake manifold, and the Viper V10 was born.

    • @wristofkings
      @wristofkings 2 роки тому +1

      The Magnum 5.9L, Magnum V10 and Viper V10 are all cousins, but the Magnum V10 wasn't actually released in a production vehicle until 94. The Viper V10 predated it and has a slightly different lineage from its truck counterpart.

    When I won my high 8 figure lotto about 5 years ago I started shopping for Vipers. I now I have 4 a 2010 ACR a 2015 TA (in the glorious TA orange) a 2nd gen GTS and a plane Jane if you can call a viper plane Jane 2017. I am currently talking to a guy for an ACR-X that has seen a fair bit of track use but I think it will be too much car and I will have to hire a coach, which hurts the manhood a bit but it's the right choice.
