Last week, Jake talked insulation types with Steve Riemer. Now he's back to chat about the science behind temperature differences in various insulation types, types of insulation that are better for windows and doors, and the kinds of insulation Jake does and does not prefer.

We have closed cell foam in our double stud walls. We love it. We live on a windy small hill and the house never creaks and there are no drafts. There is a manufacturer that makes minimum expansion closed cell foam in a can that is more spongy to prevent windows and doors from binding. We have about 200 sqft of glass on the south wall and in February when it is sunny and zero out we don’t need heat and we store it in our basement that has 4” of foam on the outside of the foundation.

    Jake,
    Well done!
Great video & thanks for a thorough review of these insulation options! I particularly appreciated discovery of mistakes that can be made when mixing chemicals. It sure raises the importance of top notch contractors!
    Cheers,
    Eric

You guys really need to come up to Plymouth, MN and see how at Titan we build the Helix Spray foam unit! Best spray foam rig on the market.

I understand some contractors like open cell for the attic ceilings because a leak in the roof can be located unlike closed cell that will allow water to travel from the break in the roof envelope.

Jake, I really enjoyed the episode. I was wondering about the foil-faced foam board you showed. What types of applications would be most appropriate for it? Thanks.

With RVs and tiny homes moving so much what insulation system ideal? Dual airtightness fabrics and batt insulation?

My opinion: if the WRB is also your air barrier than type of insulation really doesn't matter. Great WRB stops the water, stops the air than rockwool is my preference.

I see a lot of misunderstanding regarding thermal insulation, especially the economic and environmental feasibility. At the same time, the largest surplus of engineers in North America are mechanical engineers who can model these cases and find definitive answers.
