  • This is what a high grade silver vein looks like in bedrock. A small sample removed the old fashion way (sledge hammer).

    That is really interesting seeing it still in the vein. Love the way you "persuade" the silver rock to go home with you, literally falling at your feet to be taken.

    I watch tons of mining videos on UA-cam of exploration of the old mines. Most of them show and talk about the veins and ore deposits as well. Find it very interesting.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому +2

      What surprises me is the old timers here did no followup on these obvious veins. In this area, small outcrops normally expand into larger ones. In fact, there was a spot called "silver sidewalk" where almost pure silver was 3' wide for a distance. All I can think is these fellows were already onto a large vein and followed it instead.

    • @froggleggers1805
      @froggleggers1805 6 років тому +1

      Yes. I often wonder the same thing from some of the videos I have seen. There might be external factors that we have no knowledge of, like they may have died.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому +1

      For sure. Many stories probably yet untold. They also shut the mines for WWI and WWII, so the men could join up and fight in Europe.

    you should take all your silver ore finds and try melting / separating it in a kiln to make a nice little silver ingot.. if that's even possible? that would make a really cool video series

      If ever traveling thru Mt- Give me a shout- I love to take people out---(as long as they dig for me)...In an area right now that produces Gold,Silver,Copper,Lead and Zink...Our initial scan of the area has produced 5 old mine sites in the area along with some active mines. There is also a crystal mine within 1 mile that I plan on going to...

      @@elkslayer7399 Is it illegal to go in or around old mines? I'm in the UK but just wondered. Thanks

    • @elkslayer7399
      @elkslayer7399 3 роки тому +1

      @@Neilukuk very hard question to answer. In short -if the old mine is on public land you allowed to be around it.
      Some States do have legal rights to "protect you" around old mines.
      In Mt I can not only explore public land but metal detect all I want as long as a person does not still have a claim on the area.
      That just stops me from removing Gold however and I am still legal to collect artifacts. ( again some gray areas in there).hope that helps

    What is that tool you used to identify silver in the first minute?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  3 роки тому +1

      I know they came from a high grade silver mine and the other typical metal minerals found there (especially, cobaltite and nickeline). When cut or rubbed, silver is shiny, cobalt is a dull grey and nickel is brassy. These rocks have been in the ground a long time and usually have oxidized: black-silver, cobalt-pink and nickel-green. On top of that I look at my metal detector - which can be confused with a mixed metal sample but is an electronic indicator. Cobaltite gives a lower reading (close to iron) and nickeline a higher reading (close to pure silver). I have tested all of this with XRF and have learned from the results. I have to make these quick assessments in the field, as I don't want to hump out large marginal rocks, which I did plenty of while learning what to look for.

      This was the first of any size that I found. Since then, I have found more. Strange how that happens. Go a long time until one is found and then confidence/learning result in more discoveries. Next time I am there, I will try to harvest some large samples.

    If you had a petrol powered circular saw you can add that diamond blade you had to it some just regular rubbing alcohol added to water as a coolent and you could cut out some of that vein materials whole.

    I am in a spot right now with a ton of free floating silver flakes..what would be your preferred way of removing. I am first processing the gold out and noticed most of the silver pans out before the black sand..thanks for any tips and if any of your subs has a good method- please share with me..The stream in my back yard looks great with oz's of silver flake, but i would rather capture it...Dig,Dig,[Dig

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому

      I think you are seeing mica, not silver. That is why is is floating out of your pan. Silver would stay with the black sands. FYI - for your test pans, you can easily remove the majority of the black sands with a magnet, which will make it easier to find any gold.

    • @elkslayer7399
      @elkslayer7399 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, was doing more research last night..It does not brake the surface tension even if left sitting, but is swirls around in the bucket like a snow globe....I always thought mica would actually stay floating..Same weight as the tons of pyrite in the dirt....thanks for the answer... I hate using a magnet on wet black sand..I actually like the black sand in my pan, helps hold the gold down. I pan down until I get out all the blonds- keeping the black sand. then i will run one more pan of dirt ..I keep doing this until I get a nice thick layer of black sand..I then put in another pan of dirt before making a decision on my test pan...I only like using the magnet when dry..It does not hold up the gold as much..

      I think you are right. I heard a theory that makes a great deal of sense. Although the world is consuming more silver than is currently being mined, the US has been dumping silver that was used (instead of copper) in their huge nuclear centrifuges from WWII. This has kept the silver supply high, but they are almost out of silver from this source.
