The Bass Tone Secrets of Hadrien Feraud (Bass Tales Ep.17)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- There are only a handful of bass players who I think of as bass royalty - and one of them is with us for today’s episode of Bass Tales!
Completely self-taught, Hadrien Feraud possesses mind-boggling bass chops and has performed with the likes of John McLaughlin, Mike Stern, Bireli Lagrene, Lee Ritenour AND Chick Corea.
In today’s new video, you’ll hear Hadrien play through his Ken Smith Burner 5-string - and slam out some solos on his signature Mayones. I hope you enjoy digging into these tones!
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

First time I’ve actually heard Hadrien speak, seems like he’s a really cool dude. Monstrous player! The speed and accuracy!
lol yes. been listening to him for almost a decade and never heard him talk even once
Sooooo cool dude, We used to hang out in the same bar, with Jazz Open Mic Session, he's really chill. We talked about music and sport mostly, he really got the passion about anything he's talking about. Hope one day I could take another beer with him !
Having had some personal interactions with the guy, all I can say is he is an incredibly humble, gracious, always self-deprecating and extremely funny. His musicianship is unparalleled!!!
This guy's hilarious! I wasn't expecting so much personality, but I guess makes sense given his musicality. Thanks Scott, loved this one!
I've watched a bunch of incredibly humble people on this channel.. and then came Hadrien Féraud
Ahah
I like the confidence & cockiness. You can tell he does it with humour and it works with his personality
🤣
I think he actually is quite humble. It's mock bravado. He's making fun of the himself and the artifice of virtuosity and having signature guitars .
Insufferable
I love old Hadrie's Ken Smith sound. It's unbelievable.
And sooo unique too!
"But at least, every note that you played was actually heard. And then you get fired". I had to apologize to my neighbour sleeping next door because I actually laughed hard at that. Brilliant.
truly one of my favourite musicians today, really a bass giant. what I didn't know is that he is so outrageously funny. hell I love this guy!
I've been a professional bass player for almost 40 years. And, I've NEVER done any of the things this guy can do. He's a BEAST!! But, do NOT get bummed out if you are a new pro bassist!! You don't HAVE to do these things...EVER!!! Lock down the groove. Stay with the click and the drummer. And, listen across the band and react accordingly! PERIOD! .... Hadrian is absolutely AMAZING!! But, very few of us have to do any of that. It's so much more about your POCKET!! .... I'll stop here.
I say Hadryan play twice live. Both times with Dean Brown no less. Everytime a pleasure! Awesome playing and he also writes great songs!
Refreshing to hear a virtuoso genius having such humility and a sense of humor! “Very Popular in my home town living with my parents.” The complete opposite of Jaco “I am the greatest bass player in world”! -though not meant to demean the late, great one as everyone around Jaco said great things about him.
jaco had the yayo
Super talented, super funny, super cool, super everything. Hadrien is the man 😎.
🧡🧡🧡
I love this guy’s sense of humor!
Glad he’s getting the recognition he deserves. Top 10 of all time for sure!
Hadrien is so real. Quite entertaining, while delivering stellar musical artistry. Definitely enjoyed the segment, and oh those basses! 😍
"this guy is an absolute monster in every sense of the word" is a funny compliment
I love the way he has all these different basses and yet sounds exactly the same on all of them 😆
Holy crap, how am I just now discovering this guy? I gotta catch up!
Great and Hilarius!
Loved it, he's hilarious 😂 what a player. He obviously takes his playing seriously but not himself 👍
This guy has a quick sense of..humor....I love it!
Following McCartney and Jamerson, Hadrien is probably my biggest influence. The first video I saw of him was back years and years ago, him performing Marie Ael with Damien Schmidt on drums, and it was a total eye opener. And seeing how easy he got around on that Burner made me sell up my Fender and hunt one down, a 1991 Custom with quilted maple body, which I then shipped from the US.
Hadrien is a player who has consistently improved over and over as the years have passed, and his solos are like mathematical equations that he's putting together and solving at the same time! His solo on that live version of Marching Powder is absolutely astonishing.
Hadrien is the best bassist on the planet, its that simple.
Hung out with Hadrien.... You guys have no clue how deep this man is. Hes very much the bass equivalent of Bruce Lee- When you get past his amazing bass playing, you come into his life philosophy which is amazing and so very far beyond the bass.
I've been waiting for this, thank you Scott!
I have never thought that Hadrien has such a great sense of humor, now I like him even more :)
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
What a sense of humor 🤣😂. I love him already!
Really great to see Hadrien's journey with his basses and has a wicked French sense of humour. I reckon he was a joker at school. Amazing chops so effortless. Great video Scott as always and love your sense of humour maybe have a rendition of a new 4 Yorkshire men with basses - you were lucky, I used to lick bass with tongue and live in a hole in the road ....etc
Saw Hadrien in LA at some throw away gig he had at a restaurant. Amazing. Top of the heap, this guy is!
What a great interview, such an entertaining guy and obviously a jaw dropping bassist.
Really enjoyed this and the cherry on top was hearing him play Little Light of Love ! (From one of my top 3 favourite films 😊 )
The Jabba 70s would be it for me. It sounds so great. Hadrien has a great sense of humour I love that
When my idol Dominique Di Piazza says Hadrien is the most gifted bassist he ever met (at age 16), that says a LOT.
An absolute gem
I love the humour! Very entertaining and talented individual. Keep being you Hadrien!
If this dude ever loses his hands in some unfortunate accident, we can rest easily knowing he can always build a new career in comedy.
Implying that he couldn't play bass without hands...

I was just trying to listen to this as a podcast and now I’m cracking up
The rendition of "Little Light Of Love" from the french bassist and composer Eric Serra, composed for the movie "Fifth Element", is absolutely magic @6:30
Hadrien is the man! Scary good at times (most of the time rather).....
He’s a brilliant bassist with a very cool personality 🎶🔥🎵
This man is a beast . John McLaughlin and the 4th dimension the official bootleg he is killing it

Thanks guys, amazing player & very funny too.
Perhaps he could ask for a signature model to be made by the 'Wal' company, entitled 'Hadrien's Wal' !
( ie : Hadrian's Wall) 😜
“Hadrian Is What They Call Me” 😂🙌🏽🙌🏽
Hadrien is one of my favorite modern bassists.
6:38 Little Light of Love by Eric Serra (The 5th Element Soundtrack)

Never knew how silly this guy could be. Lol.. He's Nuts. Much respect Sir Hadrien.
Totally agree with the opening note!!!!! Hadrian is monster!!!!
I love my Ken Smith Burner 5-string. I've had it for almost 25 years and it plays amazing! Has an awesome feel and nice growl, although it's a little light on the bottom end for recording rock style music.
“When you turn your knob, you feel more fabulous”
The true words of a bass player, " I think I,m going to get layed...... false alarm "
I love this man.
Sting fired a muso friend of mine too!! He'll feel much better now!
Killer bass. Great technique too. You can learn a lot from him...

💯💯💯
Beautiful colors,
I love it when pour bass brothers also have humor… bravo!
Trop cool :-) Merci
TOO COOL .... and hilarious " Je suis trop fancy! "
This guy can get a great sound of any bass he play besides brands or model
Amazing play ▶️
That was hilarious. The man has lived the irony of being the world's best bass player... and how being the best often means you can't get a gig. It is absurd and Hadrien accordingly has embraced the absurdity with a wry wit. Something I find amazing is that no matter fast he's playing his finger tips on his plucking hand don't clank against the strings. Somehow he is able to twitch at such a fine level of control that the momentum of his fingers stay constant. I do think he must have a bit of a freak nervous system (and brain) to pull this off.
Interesting that you say that, I also realized that I really cared little for the notes but was fascinated by execution articulation with the hands !
I forget the name of the condition, but Niccolò Paganini had it. The condition not only affected the brain, but also the digits. Perhaps Mr Feraud has it too?
Late on in his career, Jaco Pastorius couldn’t get a gig either. He had his mental problems.
The best video thus far
Beautiful video thanks Hadrien & Scott.
Great video, great player- Scott, yr on it! Another winning video!
This guy! Oh man, made me laugh so much! Also, an absolutely killer player, thanks for the video!
