Great! Someone talked about ESR in an entry level video. I have seen videos by so called experts who don't seem to know what equivalent circuit resistance means and why it is so critical. They spend lots of video time bashing their competitors but don't seem to know anything about the art of electronics. The only thing I would suggest is that people take photos of the cap orientation before starting. The bit about trace lifting on old boards was smart. I trashed many boards before an old grey beard told me the story. Great work. Thanks.
shakahead68, We would recommend checking the harness and the monitor connectors to see if they are making a good connection. Check where the connector plugs in to the monitor chassis as these pins tend to come loose from the board. Reflow the solder on these pins to see if that helps. We have also featured your question on episode 7 of our Q&A podcast. Please listen to it for more of our thoughts on your question. Thank you for your question.
@BURPism This is probably do to what voltage different circuits require when they design the board. Obviously a higher voltage cap will work but that's because the voltage required is less that what the cap allows. It really all comes down to the design of the board. We have also featured your question on episode 14 of our Q&A podcast. Please listen to it for more of our thoughts on your question. Thank you for your question and good luck with your future repairs.
I have installed new caps & still half screen when I turn vertical hold it runs & fuZzes out , turn it down it go back to half screen , will check board connection , I resoildered too!! Very helpful will check board.?
@cameronMetcalfKelly This is pretty much exactly what we would have done if the same thing happened to us. This should be fine just as long as the copper trace is making contact with the flyback pin. You should be able to check the continuity with a multimeter to make sure. If you don't get continuity you may need to jumper a wire from the flyback pin directly to the trace. We have featured your question on episode 14 of our Q&A podcast. Please listen to it for more of our thoughts. Thanks.
ryoaska1, We always recommend discharging the monitor before attempting to do any repairs to it. While many monitors do not hold a charge anymore, it's not worth getting shocked if your monitor does. Hey guys great video I I have a quick question I cant get my Black to show Black.. It shows RED .. Is this because of a bad Cap??.. I have adjusted jut about every dial I can to get the focus. But the black and reds look like ONE... any thoughts Thanks.....
New to the channel. Great work. I’m new at the hobby. I am purchasing a Phoenix arcade. All original. The seller is giving me the option to have him install a cap kit in the original monitor or replace it with a new monitor. What are your recommendations? Thank u
jumpinggeneral, thanks for watching and welcome to the hobby! On your questions, the choice is really up to you. We would probably have him keep the CRT monitor and install the cap kit. We like to keep arcade cabinets original as long as we can. If you would like to hear more of our thoughts, we will be discussing your question on our Live Show Episode 68 which can be found at the following link: ua-cam.com/video/Tvdi9WQy5Sw/v-deo.html
@James0Reed Well, it's an electric component that stores electrical energy on a PCB and only allows AC power to pass through the circuit it's connected to. I'm not an expert, believe me, but I believe that in this case, it's used to help keep the amount of power traveling through it at a constant level, that way you don't get power surges everywhere. If you have a computer motherboard or really any PCB, the capacitors on it look barrel-shaped, usually have a stripe on one side, with a metal top.
@TheNews1990 This could fix your Karate Champ depending on what the problem is. You might want to check out the post related to this video on our website. It will give you an idea of what a cap kit fixes and help you with buying a kit for your particular brand and model of monitor. Also, you might post a video of the problem you're having so we can get a better idea of what's going on. Thanks for watching and good luck with your repair.
I have a pole position that only let me get half a screen every time I adjust to full fuzzes out . What do you recommend?? Game plays fine just that half of screen?
From your description, it does sound like an issue that a cap kit would solve. We recommend starting the repair by installing a cap kit and touching up any cold, cracked, and/or broken solder joints and see if that solves the issue. We will also be covering your question on Episode 38 of our Live Show if you want to hear us talk about it. The show will be broadcast live on April 2, 2020 at 5:30 PM CT or you can watch it as a recording at the link provided below. Thanks! Link: ua-cam.com/video/qCp1vv4lOIY/v-deo.html
I also have a golden tee four that has silver strike bowling had to install cap kit screen went out& that’s when I seem red board with Jamma harness hooked up I was very happy to see that board , was looking in to golden tee for a purchase & it’s nothing better than to have one big game instead of two .!!cant get red board to power up fan , board is not working??I heard it needs a special power hookup& I can’t find how to fire it up & also it lets me switch games but of coarse golden tee board is not getting power.??
@@phillipcarter6695 Yeah, may need an additional power supply that will work with the red board. Twisted Quarter sells them if you need one. Link: www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=335_336&products_id=231
That was very helpful, I have that power supply also , i have 250 watt power supply & it’s all wired up to boards . Monitor were & which cable hooks up for power to red board.?
Guys I have a mortal kombat 4 original. I bought it worked awesome for 3 months. Then one day blip the screen just went blank. The game sound works u can even play blind. Good information, doing cap kits is fun, and pay off profoundly if you do it right.
Thank you for the awesome videos! Extremely helpful.
