    Have been to India twice and Karl's comment is accurate: "My eyes have never been so busy." The population is just so huge and also so dense - everywhere you look there are masses of people moving, driving, talking. Elephants and cows in the street, loads of stray dogs wandering about. It's chaotic non-stop activity in all directions and it completely overwhelms the senses. I live in quite a busy town in England but the first day back after India the comparative quiet was jarring.

    • @sociallyferal4237
      @sociallyferal4237 Місяць тому +3

      Going by Karls video, it seems personal space in India seems to be a foreign concept and all strangers are entertainment. Would be interested to hear your view as having experienced it.

    • @Harrison5ived
      @Harrison5ived Місяць тому

      @@sociallyferal4237 Oh you've nailed it. Imagine a place where there are literally millions of people in a homogenised culture that looks, dresses and sounds the same, and then drop some foreigners in the middle of it. Strangers are the most incredible curiosity to them. I was part of a small charity group working in a non-tourist region. A white South African, a Ghanian, a white Englishman and me, mixed white-black Brit. To them we were like ALIENS from another planet! No personal space, locals would just stare and sometimes even touch us, as if they weren't sure we were real.
      One evening we visited a small village and were invited to the home of one of the community leaders. In the dying light we were sat on essentially his front porch, eating sugar cane, fruits and drinking tea - and practically the whole village came out just to watch us. Standing less than 10 feet away, men, women, children just staring at us in wonder as we ate. Like zoo animals.
      Occasionally you'd hear them whisper and giggle to one another, because maybe our table manners and the way we did things was strange to them. They meant no harm and there was no sense of 'meanness' or rudeness on their part at all - we were honoured guests. But it felt weird and a bit uncomfortable just the same. Most of them had NEVER encountered anyone who wasn't like them and they were captivated by our 'difference'.

Here in Northern Europe (e.g. Sweden), it's exactly the opposite. Every time she was avoiding the Indian guys' penises, I was thinking "It's just a penis!" Same thing if it was a vulva. I also have to say, i have lived in Spain since 2004, when i saw your reaction video to the uk’s impacted adverts, i felt so hurt inside. There is so much bad out there, most of us need to be reminded now and again.
    All we can do is smile with our friends and help when and where we can to help unfortunate people to learn to smile again
    I have just found out Duncan Norvelle just passed away today. A huge Uk’s 80’s comedian, if you can also respect the huge talent of this guy by reacting to Duncan Norvelle At The Club, he had a stroke a few years back but still came back on stage in his wheelchair to entertain his fans. RIP

    I have travelled from Alaska to Ushuaia, many countries in Africa, 35 of the 50 US states and most major US cities, most European countries, Australia, NZ and a few Asian countries. Without doubt, India was by far the most intense country of all. The overwhelming poverty (just from Mumbai airport to the city centre there must have been 100,000+ people sleeping on the pavements and gutters next to the highway), the 24/7 mayhem, the colour and chaos is full on, every moment of every day.

    I've travelled a lot, and have some reflections on the squat toilets since you were very interested in that.
    Firstly, physiologically, they actually are better: it's unnatural for humans to sit while defecating, it puts extra strain on our pelvic floor, leads to us having to take longer sitting on the toilet, and so on. When people use a squat toilet it literally only takes them a matter of seconds to finish their business and it's very easy on the body.
    And then, secondly, on the lack of toilet paper in China: it's not nearly as important for a squat toilet. Not to put too fine a point on it, but when you're squatting you're as wide as can be, everything is out of the "line of fire", and so you don't get nearly as dirty.
    All that said, and despite knowing the advantages, I have never been able to use one... It's too uncomfortable, feels too weird, and my body just won't do it!

    When I was 18 I travelled to India and spent 2-months volunteering in orphanages around Pune, I cannot tell you how humbling of an experience it was. Afterwards I spent another month travelling up to the beautiful Taj - I would love to go back and experience more of the country!

    I live in Scotland, and I was at school with someone called Carl. I am English originally, and despite moving when I was 5 to Scotland I still have an English accent. I commented to Carl that I find it funny that everyone else says "Carl" as "Carol", and my other friend said "Your name isn't Carol??? What?" and Carl said "No, why would my name be Carol? It's Carl" haha.

    I just love the juxyaposiTion that is Karl Pilkington.
    Thought of as small minded and set in his ways. I think and am open minded but still could NOT put myself through some of these experiences, and with such rdy humour and irony.
    The more I see of Karl, the sweeter a person he really is and also the more attractive he becomes as man. I think so many people would love KP as a husband 🙂
    BTW, I adoRe youR review and only found your channel a few days back but have been binging on your shows ever since.
    I think you both must have been UK born in previous lives as you just get us, our humour and lack of vanity. Many people think the English are arrogant, but I would say we are just quiet and keep us and our family matter mainly to heart and private.
    I Found youR channel whilst searching For more things American as one of my twin sons has just been married to his American fiance in LA. They have known each other since 10 years old and are now both 23 and married during the summer of 2024 🙂 I have been trying to lean more about American culture so as not to be, or appear to be, ignorant and / or rude. My new daughter in law is also of Phillipino origin so I want to research this side of her culture too. Any children they have willl then be partly American Phillipino, English, Scottish (my husbands side) and (Irish ) my granpa's side, so a lovely mix which I will not be able to wait to get my hands on 🙂
    They have both started the veRy very long process for their paperwork (fro both sides). I think it so important that they have full access to both countries for their future and their childrens, but we think, initially, our son will move to LA (near San Francisco). Do you know much about this region of the country and are the people quite moderate in nature and politics?
    The real thing that worries me the most is their well being and oF course this ties in with the gun culture and I have managaed to scare myself silly with seeing the LEO's body worn camera shows where so many people are legally (more so) carrying guns as norm. And we all know disaster can strike in a split second and by accisendt when handling these 😞
    And then on top is the medical care (especially if haRmed by gun violence, and its cost).
    I know your medical facilities look wonderful but these must come at a high price?
    My DIL works as an accountant in a local City (goverment office) so I do not know if she recieves medical insurance through this for her and family and feel too rude to ask !! Would you think so?
    My son is a Direcor for a Top 10 Footsie Company here in the UK for Data Analytics teams, so both in great professional jobs (especially for their ages) and my DIL's mom is looking to buy them a house. If they wanted to live in the UK we will do the same here, so they will be in a good position to pay for medical cover, but I do hear of so many horror stories regarding this aspect, and coming from a family who has been blighted with chronic illness's, this makes it one of my main concerns for when they are in the US.
    My son has been as fit as a fiddle so I am hoping we may have skipped a generation with some of the hereditary illness's that my mum, sister and niece have suffered/are suffering from. Our mum passed from hers 8 years ago now and my sister is following in her footsteps but years earlier. It is so sad to see this history repeating itself 😞
    So sorry for the long post and hope you are both well 🙂
    Love and Best Wishes from a friend across the pond in the UK xx

    I don't know what order the episodes were actually shot in, but Karl has said that India nearly caused him to have a breakdown! He was so ill and they pushed him a bit too far, to the point where he seriously considered abandoning the whole project.
    Which is probably why he was given such nice accommodation by the Ganges, rather than a mud brick hut in one of the swampy areas!

    Yes, I believe in the Ricky Gervais Show, they talk about this series and Karl says "I've only done Egypt so far". So indeed, Egypt was first and the episodes were not broadcast in order of recording. Someone correct me if that's wrong.
