- The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC) for 2023 is here. This year's offerings are Sazerac 18 Year at 90 proof, Eagle Rare 17 Year which is actually 19 years and 3 months old and is 101 proof, Thomas H. Handy which is over 6 years old and is 124.9 proof, William Larue Weller, the wheated Bourbon which is around 12 years old and 133.6 proof, and George T. Stagg at 15 years and 4 months old and comes in at 135 proof.

I tasted the BTAC lime in 2022 at a tasting dinner in Lexington. My ranking was:
1. WLW
2. Thomas Handy
3. GTS
4. Eagle Rare
5. Sazerac
I think Handy is way underrated. You guys nailed it when you said an explosion of flavor on the Handy. I thought you were gonna put it #1. Cheers

Sazerac 18 is one of those dream bottles for me. I’d definitely pay above retail (to a point) if I found one.
The cameo form blonde Sara was the "L E" moment of the opening.
It looks like y'all agree with Fred on the WLW. I am most likely to land the ER17 this year, so that is great news (maybe)!
The ER17 nose is spot on. But the palate was lacking the same intensity. Let’s try 111 on the proof next!

I have a raffle coming up this week, which is why I'm here. Think I have a good chance at something. It would be pretty hard for me to choose between the GTS and ER17, if I'm lucky enough to get drawn early. Fortunately,, I looks like I have a good chance of getting the Thomas Handy from a local bar owner, who said he'd sell me one for 2x retail, assuming he gets the bottles he's supposed to.

You mentioned KC18 when sipping the ER17, is this a good comp for ER? I can get the KC but no chance on the ER.
Not really similar in taste, I just brought it up to Sara because she feels the KC18 is too oak heavy for her, so it was interesting she didn’t have that same issue with the 19 year ER17. But there’s lots of factors that can contribute to the oak influence of a whiskey.

I am a firm believer in never including price and availability in reviewing wine and now whiskey. Then you don't get into the trap of over rating products because their main attribute is $ and availability making it hard for people to truly understand what's great.
Value and availability are personalized and easily evaluated by the beholder.

Idk, you hold these up for the LEs you should actually buy without question, but I think Four Roses and Parker's Heritage could give them a run for their money.
Oh, absolutely! And nothing in the bourbon world is a buy without question. Sorry if it came across that way, BTAC just has the hype of all hypes around it. We’ll see how these shake out when tasted blind in our best of the year video.

I have never tasted mint in a rye. What's with this mint note? I get the pine but never mint, weird...
Usually is the same mouth feel of mint. Like when you get that hit refreshing feel of mouthwash and you feel your pallet tingle. Thats the mint. For me at least
that splash out during the cork pop has to be a bit painful

So basically, none of these are very good I guess. That’s what I’m taking from this review. Luckily I will get to decide for myself shortly.
Well you can think something is oaky and still like it. In the end it is a comparison of them all so one has to rank higher then the other. I can taste test 10 bourbons I don't love and still rank one of them as #1, and I can taste 10 I love and one will come up #10. Doesn't mean they are bad or the best in the world. It's a comparison between those specific ones.
Except she clearly said it was “way past my oak threshold” which is not thinking it’s good. And yet it was 1.
So basically, these are not great at all in her mind. That’s the only logical conclusion.
She never said she didn't like it. She never said she liked or didn't like ER17. Actually if we are jumping to conclusions I could say since she said she loved the Handy and it ranked lower then the ER17 she loved the ER17 except it's oaky. One of them will rank #1 and one #5 which is fine....it's a comparison. @@flyingirish31

It’s right there man. Not sure if you just want to argue or you are too taterific to not abide anyone not likely BTAC, but it’s pretty easy to see from comments and then the rankings that this largely fell flat. Particularly in comparison to the hype.
They just can’t say it outright and keep getting their complimentary sampler set every year. 😅

Its btac, im sure they are pretty good bottles overall. None of the btacs ive had are top 5 whiskies for me yet, so if im offered one at 125 or less ill bite, otherwise meh. Last yrs gts was very disappointing for me as well.
Edit, sounds like they arent anything great this year anyway.
I hope this sentiment spreads, because the BTAC and BT Distillery hype is absolutely ridiculous. Hell, as long as people will walk away from an ECBP because they couldn't score a Stagg or EHT at a drop though... I guess the hype is still useful. 😏
