Irish Nationalist here. To be fair this documentary is actually, honest and not just singing praises. It just tells a truthful account of what happened. So thank you for that.
Culture is important. It is the backbone of our western society. However importing cultures from the middle east and asia has been counterproductive and corrosive.
I was Educated in a Marist Brother's College in central Victoria, Australia in the early 1970s. Our History teacher was Brother Vincent Daly, (also Headmaster, Geography and Economics teacher). He was the chairman of all Australian history teachers. He was proud of his Irish Catholic origins, but he also gave credit to where credit was due. He waxed lyrical about the Scots Irish. He taught us that they were the best pioneers of the 18th and 19th centuries. According to him the Scots Irish produced more captains of industry, US presidents, Heads of Universities etc . I may be wrong but I believe Neil Armstrong was of Scots Irish descent. The other theme Brother Vincent Daly would praise were the Wesleyians and their founder, John Wesley, who the good brother called a Protestant Saint. BVD believed that the Methodists were the greatest civilizers of the Wild West and the Methodist wooden churches became the hubs of sanity and civilization.
@KMartin-jf5kw He's not being anglophobic. At least I don't feel it. He's just giving a positive story addressing Irish vs Ulster Scot subject. As far as im concerned they're both one people now however different their ancestry. The English have contributed very much themselves. I'm American but 99% of me is Scots, Irish, and English in ancestry, which I'm devoutly grateful for.
From the point of view of a colonial, it seems more strange every year for there to be ongoing sectarianism in Ireland while both the R.O.I. and the U.K. are being rapidly erased by replacement migration.
Presbyterians were called Black Mouths because they could only worship in the fields. The hedges there grew brambles and blackberries which were eaten and stained the face and mouth black.
Irish nationalist speaking. High quality documentary, and interesting history. I didn’t know about the link with Maine. Is it true that “hilly billy” is derived from American Ulster Scots? ;) Enjoy your day
In case anybody wants to know, this is not a "History of Northern Ireland celebration on anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne". It's a history of the Scotch-Irish in America after the Williamite wars, with particular reference to the "Moses of the Scotch-Irish", James McGregor.
