@@schneiderandson it’s fairly common problem. These mowers were only made in 2004 and 2005. Since this one has the 22hp it’s probably a 2005. The original 2004 models had a 20hp. It’s 16 - 17 years old so seals and gaskets have seen better days. These engines are good strong running engines but they drink the gas! I’d also pick up an 89” drive belt and replace it when you pull the engine of as it’s probably soaked in oil and seen better days too.

I got a John Deere LA145 for free. There wasn't one thing wrong with it, there were several. Short story shorter, I put six hundred dollars into it and it is now my favorite thing to do- mowing with it. The detective work of finding all its problems was fun too, and bringing it back from the neglected state it was in in contrast to how it looks and runs just makes me happy.
I just bought a used riding one from a guy moving to cali, he has to convert to all electric. Then, on the way home, I found 2 more free (commercial walkbehind & pull behind). Good thing i took my big trailer!!! Great week. 👍🏼
This is the plight of used lawn mowers. 90% of the time people are trying to sell them for WAYYY too much money and they are junk. Then there’s the occasionally free-bee or sus $20 push-mower buy that only require minor maintenance. $200 seems to be the favorite price of morons selling 15 year old push mowers that look like they’ve fought in a war and “runs on starter fluid but only on Tuesdays, probably needs carb cleaned, I’d do it myself and sell it for more but I just don’t have the time”… sorry you got me ranting, bwhahahaha
Got my mower for free, been using it for 10 years, only have had to do some general maintence. Sometimes i actually make sure its still got oil, dont remember when the oil was changed last.
I just got a 1975 Dynamark rider. It's a 36 inch rear discharge mower. Got it free from original owner. It runs and rides like a champion. All it needed was a battery.
I hope you take the time to go through the different systems on that mower to adjust, lube and repair or replace. The exposed part of the fuel tank can be polished and have clear UV tape applied to keep it from "fogging up" again. Allows the fuel level to be seen quicker. For those who are wondering what you can do . . . Basically, change oil and filter. Dump and and rinse the fuel tank. Clean carb, replace fuel line. Clean and adjust or replace spark plugs. Check cooling fins on engine for debris blocking air flow. Check valve lash for proper clearance. Change hydrostatic fluid. Check mower deck spindles for noise or excessive play.
I just picked up 2 free blowers. The owner couldn’t get them started. The craftsman fired right up in a few pulls and he also had a BRAND NEW husqvarna that didn’t run. Got it home and tried all my tricks but nothing. This thing is so new that the air filter is completely white. I don’t think it even had a full tank ran through it yet. I noticed the compression was pretty low so I pulled the motor and unfortunately the piston and head are completely shot. I think homie ran it without mixing the gas right out of the box. Buuut $30 buys a new head and piston so $30 for 2 blowers isn’t bad at all.
Thing is that even if it isn't worth fixing just look at all the expensive parts you can salvage on those machines. Picked up 10 snowblowers cleanup week. Not all ran or could be repaired but there were still hundreds of parts on them that i used to repair others, like 1 nikkie carburator was bad but another had a perfect carburator but the body was gone. Now i have a spare engine 😂 Some Tiny gears and parts that you might not even be able to buy. We are a special breed who believe in repair and reuse, helping to save the planet.
They've got nothing on a Kawasaki. Those engines run good and easy. I much prefer the feel and sound of an older brigas though and the modern Briggs EFI V2 engines, while problematic, are glorious

My dad got a free push lawn mower at the dump it was just a year old guy said he couldn't get it running my dad brought it home the spark plug boot fell off push it back on we had that mower for over 10 years
Haha it’s almost always the simple things! Similar thing happened to me once at the dump - I asked a lady if she was getting rid of a push mower - she gave it to me and turned out all that was wrong is it was out of gas 🤣

I got a free tv like this. A friend worked at a pizza place and said it broke and they got a new one. I picked it up and those goofballs had taped over the vent in the back because of the flour they didn’t want it getting in the tv. So it would overheat and turn off. Brought it home, took off the tape, and it worked perfectly. It was only a year old. A $800 sampsung 55 inch smart tv. I love getting scores like this. Some people just don’t care to think about the value of things idk.
I got a free John Deere 102, 42” deck mower from a neighbor about 10 years ago. It took an $8.00 part to get it running and I still use it to this day. It’s a great little mower.
Nice, just went with a friend in his big pick up truck to pick up a MTD Yard Man Yard Bug Took a bit more time to get it in and out truck is much higher off the ground than yours plus making sure the ramps are connected to the tailgate there’s already enough fail videos on here ha ha ha, I should’ve filmed the loading, but I forgot to, but I did film the unloading. I did a live stream.
So why was it being given away if it cranks. Normally it’s the fuel shut off switch that goes out. Or the higher ethanol fuel sits in the carb and destroys it and people throw them out
Though it is nice, you just gotta be careful when doing that. I also try to get free mowers when I can but usually people will throw them away because it has a MAJOR engine problem like it blew up or burns a lot of oil. But he got lucky and got a very nice mower for free. I almost got a free mower but when I realized that the engine blew up and dropped it and left.
I saw in one youtubevideo that some (or all) JD dealerships basicly throw complete (or somewhat complete) lawnmowers right in to the garbage, i thought about picking those up (basicly for free) for parts and maybe complete units, do you think that is possible?would they allow me to do that?thanks!
If you could make friends with someone at a local dealer you might be able to get some broken units for free or cheap, maybe the cost of scrap. I’ve found the best success sourcing mowers by telling friends, family and coworkers that I’ll take anything for free, running or not! Picked up a x324 yesterday.. you got to go fast they said the had 40 people msg on it. I was first . Dont run.but the idlers pulley is off seems they wellled it at the bottom. Can yhat pulley be replaced?
I have picked up three. I'm waiting for this 100 degree Texas heat to cool back down to play with them. I already had two running riding mowers before I picked up these 😂. My wife says "Why? You already have two 🤷? I said "It's a man thing. Like you have so many damn shoes and purses 🤨".

seems like around here in eastern NC a mower like that would still be asking $300 with a hole in the side of the engine.

Yeah I feel like COVID prices are still hanging on a bit….I used to sell old running push mowers for $20. Sometimes I can get $50 or more now

It runs , if it burns oil, use heavier oil like diesel oil.
