It’s ironic because only a few years ago, Roelly had one of the worst distended stomachs the Olympia stage has ever seen. Glad he turned it into a strong point.
Phil got second out of respect for being 7 time Mr olympia.
Roelly is something else, and may be better from the front. I do think Phil has a better back and legs, but the amount of muscle Roelly has relative to his height, while still looking conditioned, is insanity.
If Phil wasn't the returning champion it may have been different

Jack I completely agree. Roelly might be the freakiest competitor we’ve ever seen along with Ronnie. And now that Roelly has shown he can control his waist he’s the big dog. Shawn deserved it this year, he hands down looked remarkable, but if Roelly comes in next year even more conditioned it’s all over.
Nick's Strength and Power It was interesting listening to Ray commentate because he kept on noting the water coming out on Phil's physique. I went to bed before they announced the placings and thought I was going to wake up to Phil winning #8 but was pleasantly surprised.

Short answer is yes. Rolley looked amazing!! Not quite enough aeisthetically to quite take the top spot but definitely better than Phil. In fact Roelly was so good that if he had if won I don't think there could really use have been much argument. He had improved that much!!!

Phil's gut is out of control. No definition whatsoever. Although he does have good thighs and a good back, but that's about it (and arms).
having an under control gut is bodybuilding 101. The first step in getting in shape for anyone is to try and get that sometimes ellusive six pack. So for a top bodybuilder, someone at the very pinacle of the sport to be lacking in that area is simply unforgivable. I really like the mixture of size and elegance demonstarted by Rhoden but to be honest the more I go back and compare him to Roelly...that is one close call. Roelly had that very rare balance these days of stupid big muscles combined with small wasit and joints making him look almost like a caricature...he could easily of won. It's all on for next year.
My brother, sister-in-law, wife, and I attended the Olympia this year in Las Vegas. It was an incredible experience! Shawn's abdominal and thigh shots were simply phenomenal! Shawn's conditioning was the best in the line-up, and his symmetry and aesthetics were unmatched. He deserved the victory this year, big time! 👍

Yeah, I think Roelly should have been that second place. Just imagining the insanity that would ensue when they call Phil for 3rd and Shawn and Roelly still standing up there puts a smile on my face. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that the first year a reigning champ is beaten they have ever given them anything but 2nd, they want that big reveal at the end where they can drop the "New Mr. Olympia" bomb and everyone freaks out.

That is the way I thought based on emotion (I think large waists in bodybuilding are disgustingly ridiculous) but then I analyzed everything and gave it to Phil. I am also pretty sure Phil was not hitting his abs in that last shot.

Agree, may be Shawn’s legs were more conditioned with those separation in quads & hams. But upper body specially mid section I thunk Roelly was insane, he had not gut at all. Complete flat mid section with nice abs. Amazing work by Roelly, well deserved People’s champ..

I think the biggest reason Phil came in 2nd versus Roelly is because the biggest question of the night was: Will Phil be dethroned? If Phil took 3rd place, there wouldn't have been any suspense during that final head-to-head matchup. In order to maintain that level of suspense that's been part of the final head-to-head matchup for the last 6 years, Roelly HAD to come in 3rd.
Roelly looks absolutely insane @5:19 compared to Phil there. shinier tan definitely had to do with the overall pop but I do think Roelly should've placed above Phil. He brought an amazing package.

Shawn Ray should be a multi-time Mr. Olympia and so should Dexter Jackson if the IFBB knew what they were doing. Flex Wheeler should have at least 1 Sandow if the IFBB had the right idea in mind all along, I think it's strange that they went this route this year.
Good for the sport, though, it creates a buzz next year - what are they looking for, the world will only know the night of the Olympia!

It is kind of hard to place a 7 time consecutive Mr. O in the first callout in the corner position. It is almost as if those places were reserved for bonac and winklaar. And from that point forward, i do not think the judges really paid that much attention to Phil vs Roelly Winklaar. They kind of already decided that the top two is between Shawn and Phil
I kinda figured this was gonna be a topic for ya Nick and I'm glad you did it. I definitely think that Roelly beat Phil, I said that Rhoden shoved Phil offa the throne and kicked him in the ass in an earlier post so after that Roelly picked him up and pitched him out the window. Those two guys seem to have taken it more seriously, put in the most work and improved the most out of all the competitors. I am NOT a Phil Heath fan but came into this Olympia fully expecting him to win. I was so stoked to see him thrown completely outta the house and he shouldn't even think about comin' back unless he makes similar improvements as Shawn Rhoden and Roelly Winklaar. Many of us consider Arnold to be the GOAT and a whole lot consider Phil to be the BLOAT and my fingers are crossed for this to be the beginning of a new era. ...............................PEACE!!

I could never understand how Bonac was placing as well as he had been 'cause he has no aesthetics at all, he's got too much muscle packed onto his short frame. Although he's about three feet shorter he's playin' the same mass game as Big Ramy it seems.

His waist was a lot smaller than it was... however, it was still quite large and his abs still had a split. He needs to do more pullovers/vacuums to strengthen the inner abdominal wall which will actively hold his abs together and fix his midsection. I myself do a shitload of vacuums and I can honestly say I struggle to even push my gut out. Vacuums ftw.

Roelly bought it this year and even without breaking it down and analysing it, you could see roelly was better. Every front and side pose he takes. Phil's back is better, legs slightly better but roelly looks more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Really glad the judges went against size and have gone for aesthetics but this needs to be the consistent message now. Bloated guys are going to be penalised. I may be a little bias, as I'm not a fan of Phil's in terms of his personality but he came 3rd this year. If roelly downsizes slightly, tightens the waist even more, he could be a massive threat next year
I feel like they had to give Phil second so that the new crowning would have been more dramatic with the Phil vs Shawn rematch so to say. Basically just to hype up the final announcement more. Though i do think Roelly looked better than Phil.

I think Kai is very disappointing. He's a man that spews motivation at others but doesn't show it in practice. By giving up competing in Mr O because he felt it was rigged is just telling others that it's ok to.quit if you feel you not going to win. So 2nd & 3rd is just not good enough.

I don't really think that because phil lost mostly because of his bubble gut (this also wasn't the sharpest package he has brought) but kai has even worse gut than phil. Also the roundness of phils muscles give him an edge over kai because kai has really blocky muscles (also I'm huge kai fan so not saying any of this by hating him). But if kai would have came with really sharp look he would have won at least phil

Yes Roelly should have been second place. He could not have beat Rhoden on the numbers because of the abdominals and shots with the leg striations and separation. This shows how heavily the past is weighted by the current judging staff. I clearly believe that this was a "this is going to be hard for Phil to take, let's not make it worse by putting him in third" move on their part......
