Is There Any Way To Avoid the Suiciders on Fixed Friday?

  • For today's episode of Fixed Friday I make one kill which extends into a second that was overly aggressive. In the 3 player endgame I am able to equalize my forces with the purple player with a fully losing record. We know we have to watch out for folks like that.
I was not able to recover from a suicide play. Another data point to show that the Classic Fixed GM is the highest form of GM.

I share some strategic thoughts for the game of Risk: Global Domination.

To be successful in a Fixed game one has to understand diplomacy and working with others so as not to throw the game away. It's no wonder purple doesn't ever win. Pete, while you are primarily a prog player and have room to improve your fixed game, having watched your past 8 months or so of games, there is noticeable improvement in your fixed plays, and I hope you continue to learn fixed and enjoy it, because we certainly enjoy watching it. As someone who almost exclusively plays fixed, it usually comes when a player takes smth personal. Attack their territory? face the consequences. Pressure their army? Pay for your sins. If you even seem to be a threat (this can range from having surrounded their armies, to having a large stack near, to even controlling the neighbouring continent) They will make sure that you burn in hell for your crime of attacking their unprotected continent. Even if your army is clearly larger, they will make it their life's goal to ruin you at all costs. Irrespective of if they still have a chance of survival or not.

To summarize my probably unnecessarily long text: basically in fixed cards instead of trying to get to the 3 player situation as soon as possible by doing any possible kills, try to think what would be the most efficient way for you to get to it and with which players it would be the most ideal to end up with, so you would have a promising position. By doing that you increase the probability of being successful and minimize the chances of getting suicided on

Plus even if he didn't kill the other players red would, or even worse other players would move into claimed Peter's territory which would be as bad.

I think because you're so good at prog, you tend to line up strings of kills, and that scares the crap out of inexperienced players. That's when blue broke the alliance and it all went down hill for you.
The trick with fixed is, by the time they realise you're good and in a good position, it should be too late for them to do anything.

I'm 100% sure, purple was the alt account of magenta. First, we have to assume that you can't get a 0-67 ratio without doing it deliberatery (also looking at the game, purple was bad but not THAT bad). So it was obvious from the start that purple was a troll or a cheater (more likely a cheater because the troll would not be determined enough to play 40 minutes long game). It is also worth noting that magenta was the only one with enough wins to consider it as the purple's main account. If we assume that magenta and purple were the same player, all the questions suddenly get answers. Why did purple broke the alliance right after you killed magenta? What did purple take revenge for by suiciding at you? Why did magenta not even tried to conquer any continent (yes, maybe he did not have a good start but he could at least approach one of the continents, see if he can discourage/chase out someone and then eventually escape or take)?

I personally wouldn't have taken the double-kill. It could've went every direction with a player like purple in the game. Never give a bad player too much power. He won't be able to control it. Also, red obviously had no interest in anything but to sleep in Australia. I will never understand those players. So you were basically alone against the purple player and you were the one to make the move on him, without any help from red.
I would have much rather kept magenta alive, since he was a smart player from what I've seen. I like to have alliances with smarter players much more. You could've maybe given him a chance against purple, killed purple together with him and then easily teamed up against red. But idk, maybe that would've been even worse. That's just how I would've played it.

Hey Pete, at 35:40 you gave purple an olive branch. But what you did was threaten his europe and give him a free break in SA. What you could have instead done was left that 8 stack there and full stacked the rest on Texas. You can still be broken, but you aren't threatening Europe, and his only break is Asia, which is expensive and then and only then, you have a war. If you played it like this, it would be the closest true olive branch play that tells Purple "you can have Europe, I have NA, we have friendly borders, let's get Red out of the game". That would be your only other line of play you could have made to avoid the suicidal purple player

There is a design flaw in this game. The developers have mistakenly added a camera animation between each dice blitz. These animations are left on by default. This causes newer players to lose games to speed before they hopefully ask the question you did. I imagine many have quit entirely thinking they've lost for a legitimate reason rather than a design flaw.
In order to fix this for yourself turn off camera animations off in settings.

Not saying it would have been the best, but my play would have probably been to keep the green bot and the pink player alive, while eventually seeking to eliminate red (waiting till the time when you would be sure that after taking him out it wouldn't give too much power to purple in contrast with you and pink combined, and probably it would have been good for you that the bot in North America would have become relatively strong). Then staying in Australia passive and letting the purple player deal with green bot and pink.
The red player like immediately ended up blocking his Australian army on purpose showing that he will be the most passive player ever, so that immediately lets realize that he would be one of the worst players to end up in the 3 player endgame so unless you would be in the dominating position.
As usually you would like to end up with 2 the least passive players. And Australia is usually the best place for that as usually lower public lobby games go like this: two bigger players over attack each other giving the Australian player the win. And if you're one of that bigger players when the Australian player is very passive, then it could be a nightmare for you, as if you fight that other player alone, then he will over attack you giving the Australian player the game, or if you stay as passive, then that another player wins.
This comment is not to criticize or something, my gameplay isn't perfect either and I make a lot of mistakes. And again, every situation could be very individual and depend on what type of players you're playing with, but hopefully these will be some useful guidelines and might even a bit answer to your question in the title.

    • @Risk4Ever
      @Risk4Ever 2 роки тому

Or another possible play instead of taking green and pink out I might have gone with, is to just to keep hoarding troops with South America and Africa and wait till the purple player himself makes some bigger attacks with you expecting that he would highly weakens himself.

The only thing that makes sense is that Red and Purple are either the same player or were communicating. Purple has ZERO wins, Red sits there and turtles for 90% of the game attacks Purple, and Purple responds by suiciding into you. It’s so illogical that it simply has to be malicious

Risk seems to be way to vulnerable to griefing. While most competitive games have the whole "net zero" winners and losers, Risk allows a player to just straight ruin another players game without consequence. Normally a game would have a punishment system for these type of players.

    • @davidnguyen-tri9031

Kind of agree, but at the same time, I think playing like that is an auto-lose for the player who suicides into another player. Plus, I have no idea how such a system could be implemented from a purely practical point of view.

It’s comically laughable how atrocious some players are at this game🤣 I knew as soon as purple started guarding borders he wasn’t gonna be a trustworthy ally for long…. Then we saw what happens soooo often: the tide turns in the favor of a player who actually has a clue (Pete) and then purple decides to slop their miniscule wee wee on the table and suicide you. Yeah, really showed you (*sarcasm*)
I’d be interested to have seen how long trash red took to wipe purple, my guess is the game went on for at least a dozen more turns as red guards Indonesia with a 100 stack from that super threatening 9 stack LULZ🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
