Switching Speaker Cabinets between a MARSHALL and a HIWATT!

- I'm playing two killer halfstacks and I'm switching speaker cabinets between them so I'm playing the Marshall amp through the Hiwatt cab and the Hiwatt amp through the Marshall cab.
Gear:
1976 Marshall JMP Super Lead
1976 Hiwatt DR103
1971 Marshall 1960B cab with '73 T1221 (close mic), '67 T1217, '71 T1281 and '68 T1221
1970 Marshall 1960B with 2X '73 Fane Crescendos
1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom Cherry with a '77 Super Distortion in the bridge.
close mic: 548
room mic: C414
hallway nic: Beta57A
Mic preamp: API3124+
Fryette Power Station 2
It would be cool to see more of this with all kinds of amps and cabs. For science!
I agree!
The fanes had a girthy cut..no matter the amp ..the hiwatt needs the fanes I believe.but the marshall can live with either..big respect for fane after this..Thanks Johann
Thanks Michael! Yeah Fanes are really articulate
Page and lifeson made Hiwatts sound great with Marshall cabs . The Hiwatt doesn't need the fanes .
Love the Marshall through the Fane speakers!
But what's even better is the Fane purple backs in their cabinet with a Marshall amplifier! Now that is the money!
Thanks! I’m gonna try that!
This is the video I was waiting for when I saw the Marshall vs Hiwatt video! You're gold Johan!
Me too
Glad to hear it!
Cheers
I liked them both, through either cabinet. Probably my favorite was with the Greenbacks, but only by a tiny margin. God bless and rock on!
Thanks J! Rock on!
Real tough to decide....they both have their pros and cons .... I'll take one of each please 😂
Cheers John 😆
Forums constantly chant to death ad nauseum that Hiwatts need Fanes to sound good. Hiwatts sound great through the greenbacks here. No idea where anyone got the idea. Both amps sound great through both cabs.
Thanks I agree! I think for cleaner tones with a Strat a la Gilmour or Townshend the Fanes are crucial though.
Hiwatt thru the Fanes nails it!
Thanks!
With super lead and dr103 builds in progress, i found this video fascinating!
Thanks, glad to hear it!
All four sounds are radically different, but to my surprise, my favorite is the Hiwatt through the Greenbacks!
Mine too .
This gives a bit unbalanced reference since the cabs are on different level to ground. Besides that, very interesting video. 🤘
Thanks that’s a very good idea for a video!
Aaaaand, one last test: blending the two cabs together...
😂 that will definitely be coming up!
now THAT is a surprising result and a GREAT idea of a comparison (always wondered myself) !
Thanks!
The Hiwatt into Greenbacks is like a Jimmy Pageesqu experiment. Very Cool
All combinations sounds killer if you ask me !
Thanks Gary! Glad to hear it
I think I'd be quite pleased switching cabinets (Marshall with Fanes and Hiwatt with a tad less gain into greenbacks) but running both together :)
Thanks John.....but a vintage Hiwatt cab has a small port on the bottom of the back panel & the Hiwatt designed Fane speakers are specifically designed with that in mind. It makes quite a significant difference in the upper mid-range!
The Marshall with the Greenbacks is 🔥 and I can hear is Ace Frehley 😂
Ace is the greatest! 🤘
@@JohanSegeborn I'm not sure how I did it but Kiss made it into my Spotify play list while I was out running the other day. This is entirely your fault 😂
The Hiwatt falls flat without the Fanes. The Marshall through the Fanes sounds surprisingly good
Tell that to Jimmy Page at Royal Albert Hall
I actually really liked that combination. It lacked punch though
@@jaysonlavie603 Jimmy Page as in the paedophile? No thanks
@@jaysonlavie603 Jimmy Page as in the paedophile? No thanks
Thaaaaaaaankk yooou so much for the video, Johan!!!!
This was of great help to me
Cheers!!
Glad to hear it! Cheers!
Marshall was kind of harsh and brittle with the Fane's, but Hiwatt on Celestion's was totally bitchin'!
Thanks, that’s my take away too
FANES!!! Did not expect that much difference
I like the Marshall through greenbacks best in this comparison. But interestingly enough I think Page’s best live tone was with a Hiwatt through a G12m cab ( ?? not 100% sure of the model) at the Royal Albert Hall show.
Yeah I think he played his Hiwatts through model 1982 cabs with G12H30 55Hz greenbacks T1281 but I’m not sure
Page used G12H30 55 hz greenbacks . All of his Cabs were 1982 cabs bought in mid 1969 and the G12H30s 55HZ were the stock speakers although 75 HZ H30s can't be completely ruled out and then there is the question of how often Page Reconed his speakers. Could have been reconed to 75HZ at any point but in January 1970 they would likely still have the stock cones as he only had the cabs a few months at that point .
@@adamwatson6916 Thanks for the info. Sounds like a demo for Johan to do ( the live at Royal Albert Hall tone)
Thanks for this one! I thought that the Marshall sounds better through Celestions, while the Hiwatt sounds great through either. I may be way off, but Hiwatt through Celestions sounds a lot like Ace.
Thanks! Yeah both amps through Celestions is Ace to mee
Well, for me they sound the best when the speakers are switched :)
The Hiwatt sounded amazing through the Marshall cab. Perhaps not firm enough but certainly really cool
I play my 1971 DR103 through my 140W VS412 Marshall cab.
Its as good as it gets.
The tipical hiwatt 4x12 has a different costruction altogether with a sort of bass reflex in the back. Bigger and darker sound.
I’m trying to get one so we can compare
I liked the Hiwatt with the Greenbacks
Glad to hear it!
Hi, Johan! TBH, I prefer a classic Marshall stock, but if I will see Hiwatt, I will be still satisfied. See you!
S.
Thanks man! See you!
Hiwatt is brighter and deeper, more scooped out in low mids than marshall. Sharing tonal quality with a fender/vox cross but with the mid center moved a little lower. Those greenbacks run out of treble right when the hiwatt is winding up leading to a very dark and fizzy sound. Would definitely get lost in a mix.
The marshall is very much more mid heavy sounding rather ratty and jagged with the Crescendos. Gave me Thin Lizzy meets Joe Walsh vibes.
Thanks interesting feedback
Wow Johan! I started with an open mind, but in the end accepted that Marshall's go with Celestions and Hiwatt's go with Fanes LOL! So basically you just confirmed the old Rock legends really knew what they were doing. Thank you!!
Yeah that’s what they were designed for. I think the switches sound really cool too
Sounds awesome! I have a Hiwatt SE 4122 cab and use Marshall’s with it and vice versa. My Hi-Tone JP amp sounds killer with Scumback H75-PVC speakers
Thanks, glad to hear it!
Interesting! On the one hand this shows how much the speakers/cab affects the tone, but on the other hand it sort of proves that Marshall amps should be used with Celestions and Hiwatt amps should be used with Fanes. My '72 Super Lead sounds the best with my 4x12 Greenback cab. Since I don't have a Hiwatt cab, my '74 Custom 50 sounds the best with my 4x12 cab loaded with G12-65's.
Fascinating Johan. I think the Greenbacks were the best, especially with the Marshall, as they had a bit more bite.
Thanks Eddie! Yeah Greenbacks are default for these kinds of riffs
The combination of Marshall and greenbacks has probably become more familiar over the years. That why I love it too. My 4 x 12 71 greenback cab sounds great with both the 63 Blond Bassman and the 87 2555/2553 head, always.
I just can't understand where Johan gets all these delicious instruments and amplifiers. Even though Finland is the best country in the world and Sweden is second (humour), the amount of musical treasures that Johan presents is phenomenal. Honestly, jealous greetings from Helsinki to Johan and thanks again for the great video. MVH Henri
Aloha Johan! Can't wait to move into old family home, so I could use something better than my cellphone.
Aloha Victor!
I'd love to hear these in a song mix . In my cover band , I'm going with the Marshall while other guitarist uses a Vox Ac30 . In recording I tend to mix Marshall , Fender & Vox etc . Panned correctly can make for a huge guitar sound . Love the videos , Johan !! They help out so much !!
Thanks Jesse! Glad to hear it
No doubts the speakers are the most important part of the sound…
Indeed!
Yep, speakers win again
Don't forget the importance of the wood and wrap material. Acoustics matter so much but yes speakers are king
Funny, my Marshall sounds like a Marshall whether through a 1x12 open back g12 70, or a 4x12 of g12t75s.
I can't wait to tell all the Fender guys that all they need for Dual Rectifier tones is a Mesa Boogie speaker.
@@rocketpigrecords3719 You're surprised that your amp sounds similar through roughly similar speakers?
I’m fortunate to have all the gear used here… my own experience is (unsurprisingly) Hiwatts with fanes, Marshall’s with Celestions, BUT p90’s and mini humbucker loaded LP’s truly shine with the Hiwatt/fane combo…
So yeh “59 LP into a Marshall plexi into greenbacks is hard to beat IMO.
But my main rig is Hiwatts into fanes, with minis or p90’s… horses for courses :)
Yeah Fane definitely likes single coils better
Better harmonics on the Marshall cabinet with more low mids to cut through the mix. Don't get me wrong the Hi Watt has more clean definition.
In the high end. I would choose the Marshall cabinet. It will not get lost in the mix. Cheers. Darrell in Hawaii aloha
Thanks Darrell! Aloha from Gothenburg!
There was a BIG difference between them! The Marshall seemed a bit more balanced & 'throaty' & the Hiwatt more 'crunchy'!
The Marshall balanced the brightness of the Hiwatt nicely! Rock on! \m/
Thanks man, rock on!
@@JohanSegeborn JA!
I run my Trinity Triwatt Hiwatt clone through Weber Thames in my 2x12. It’s really good. I had been running vintage 30’s before and the were way to harsh and Ice pickey. With the Weber Thames (Early Fane reproductions, not the crescendos) it totally nails live at Leeds tone and Rush exit stage left. The speakers are probably 50% of that sound.
They sound surprisingly different, but they all sound great. Wonder what a cab with two Fanes and two Celestions would sound like?
Thanks! They would complement each other beautifully
Did not like the Fane's at all. They sound very boxy to me compared to the GB's. Nicely done as always!
Thanks!
You gottq try the Hiwatt though a 4 by 12 with G12H30 55HZ . Thats what Page and Lifeson did .
They all sound great!
Unsurprisingly, my favourite choice was anything going through the Greenbacks. 😂 Although I also preferred the Marshall over the Hiwatt when they both went through the Fanes. I felt the Hiwatt was a bit stiff in comparison.
Thanks man!
What a difference a day..sorry, cab makes!
Cheers ;-)
🎉🎉
Cheers!
I prefer both amps in the Greenbacks. Fanes are cool but I'm a Celestion guy, I guess...
All combinations sounded good, but I swear I think I prefer the Marshall with the Fanes best...
Johan - You're an Iommi fan, aren't you? I can definitely hear the influence!
I love Tony Iommi! Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn Same here - since 1972. Oooops. Just revealed my age...😁
I now see that I need two old crescendos and two old green backs in the same cab. hahaha
Yeah they complement each other very well
I would like to run my 71 dr103 with my 73 412 marshall cab but i would be worried the greenbacks would blow.
Yeah you two cabs with a DR103
Greenbacks win on both sides, in my opinion! Fanes don't sound so interesting to me.
Thanks Fabrizio
Thanks Fabrizio
Both sound better thru Celestions
Thanks
I see all the "speaker is most important" posts & raise you:
Get the Master of Puppets sound out of a blackface Fender with whatever 80s Marshall 4x12 was used on the record.
Not the Explorer with the high output Tom Anderson (pre-EMG), not the "Crunch Berries" IIC++, just "rando JCM800 cab with X Celestions".
How about Vox cleans out of a single channel HR50 with just the Blue Alnico speaker/cab? Or, better, let's get that tone out of a raging high gain channel of your choice, speaker is the only variable?
The truisms in this field are something else!
The speakers are the most important thing.
Hi! A Blackface Bassman tightened up by a tube screamer or a ProCo Rat through a Marshall 1960B cab with G12-65 Celestions would get me close if I could play like James and Kirk. However the AJFA tone would be hard to achieve with a Fender amp. In your second example (the clean sound) the amp is almost as important as the speaker so that would be tougher to achieve. The speaker is the most important thing for 70s hardrock though. Cheers
@@hoboroadie4623 sure pal, go play ACDC on a kazoo through a Jazz Chorus, I don't think Greenbacks are gonna help.
ITV the Marshall didn't magically morph into a Hiwatt upon plugging into Fanes, did it? Variation on a theme more than the most important link in the chain.
Putting hot sauce on a hamburger doesn't turn it into a burrito.
@@JohanSegeborn you could do that...or just get a IIC+, Studio preamp, Mark V, or Wampler Sovereign. The Sovereign makes any amp/speaker drip with IIC+ goodness, whereas a 1960a sounds like a 1960a - ie, it sounds like nothing without an amp plugged into it, and a guitar plugged into that.
I've owned equivalents to 90% of James's rig for that. 24 3/4" scale setneck with EMG 81, EL34 power section with Mullard iron, celestion loaded 4x12, but my Laney AOR sounded far more Sabbath & Ratt than MOP/AJFA. Despite the fact that those bands aren't associated with that amp, a modded Marshall is a modded Marshall.
My 2 Plexi clones (handbuilt & YBA1) sounded like Plexis into every cab I plugged them into. Maybe some sounded like ass, but it was plexi flavored ass.
For my money, it's the preamp. I can get my tone with as little as a Joyo British or Orange Sound into a mixer with a humbucker guitar.
No one thinks Tech 21's 90s era speaker emulation is equal to a real V30 loaded cab, yet Collective Soul sold like 3 million records with a GT2.
the fane has mor headroom than the greenback
Yeah indeed
