Anybody accusing him of animal abuse has never met a rhea or similar large bird. They could quite actually kill him, given a good enough chance. Those birds do not mess around, and a plastic trash lid whap to the head is about as harmful as a squeaky bat would be. Kevin is trying to push him down the literal pecking order, and running away would only make him MORE aggressive. The lid is a deterrent. Nothing more.
Yeah. It scared me a bit when Ben bent over right next to Kevin, because large birds are known to start kicking anything that's laying down. That can be very lethal, and while I don't know if Rheas do that, from what I understand, many large flightless birds do, and I don't think that stepping lower is worth the risk, especially with an aggressive bird like him.
Thank you for explaining this I’m going through something similar with my chickens and think this explanation has been extremely helpful. I would not want to be bit by Kevin that looks painful! So glad I found these videos!
Ya, people accusing him of that haven’t seen what wild/farm animals can do to each other and to humans. Animals, which even include small dogs aren’t as frail as humans

Veterinarians are under extreme pressure because unlike humans animals cannot tell them what's wrong with them, and if an animal dies which they often do quite easily veterinarians feel very responsible to the animal's parents/owners. A small team (3) of vets really dropped the ball when my dog died. She needed to be hospitalized but I didn't learn it until it was too late. When we had to put her down the first guy who misdiagnosed her I peeked into his office he was going to pieces when my whole family was crying.

Youre a great farmer dude, dont let dumb commenters mess with your mojo. The crazy number of things you need to know about all the animals and the equipment is nuts, and your animal variety is ever growing.
To those comments calling it animal abuse, I'd love to see you out on a cattle farm with a territorial bull or food greedy cow in the field. Sometimes showing dominance is needed in the proper care of animals. There is a big difference between dominance and abuse, and Ben does not abuse. Animals are far more aggressive then he is. They will bite, kick, and harm one another for almost anything. Even a mother cow will viciously kick her calf in the head when weaning if the farmer does not step in and seperate them. And, yes, they may need to push her back, with force, or bop the mother on the nose or twist the ear to seperate them. A moment of discomfort prevents a calf's head from being shattered by an aggressive mother's hoof.
Finally a smart commenter
My aunt has had horses all her life and taught me early that if they try to bite, and they will if they're jerks. Punch them in the side of the head, among other techniques that sound outlandish. I couldn't honestly believe it until I heard horror stories from other ranchers because they can easily bite off ears, nose lips, cheeks and whatever else gets in their chompers. Thankfully I haven't had to experience that, but these are over a half ton animals and need to know you're not a target for their temper.
@@Xeil I second this! my sister works at a barn where the top coach had almost her entire cheek bit off, she could've been blinded too if it was a bit higher on her face. She healed well and is a lot more cautious when dealing with the "trouble" horses lol, can never trust a pissed off horse.

yes, there is a difference between abuse and what is necessary. Working with cattle you often have to give them a good smack on the head with a stick, especially during calving season when the mothers will charge you if you try get close to their calves. If you compare smacking a cow on the nose to what cattle do to each other, smacking is really more of a minor inconvenience to them xD

ben, rather than eating any of the chicken eggs, you should boil and mash them up into their feed, shell and all. chickens have been bred to produce such a massive amount of eggs, that they are typically devoid of a bunch of nutrients (often why they lose a ton of their feathers), and wild birds will typically eat any of their eggs that don't hatch to regain those nutrients. it's better that they get them back for best health, and also it'll save a bit of money by stretching feed out :)

@@ThetaSimpson nah, birds will actually naturally do this in the wild. in fact, most mammal eat their own placenta after giving birth to regain the nutrients (and remove scent of blood from predators), and if any carnivorous bird chicks die, many birds will feed the dead chick to their other chicks since food is so precious and scarce. Hey Ben just a fun fact, if you’re planning to have bees, look into the bee species that live around you, not just honey bees! Honey bees are by far the most human made bee colonies which hurts other bees that are much better at pollination than honey bees. There are plenty of non honey yielding bees that are great at pollination of all sorts :)

I've been in the hospital for just over a year now and found your videos a few weeks back. I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you Uncle Ben and all the animals especially Kevin, Big Ounce, and of course hit rapper and artist Dababy. I think I have binged watch every single one by now and they have brought so many laughs and smiles to my face on hard days. I hope one day when I can out I can volunteer at the rescue one day. After major bushfires here in the Blue Mountains in Australia then covid lockdowns, then my best friend of 27 years died after a 5 year battle with cancer I was struggling with major depression. Taking care of a rhea requires a lot of management, when uncle Ben taps kevin it’s asserting dominance, not animal abuse, animals of that species need to learn what dominance is like. It’s kind of like a top of the food chain scenario or a pecking order
People don't appreciate that you need to communicate with animals in a way similar to how they communicate with each other. It's absurd to expect them to just understand humans. Running from Kevin would just teach him to be more aggressive, because it works, he doesn't understand that Ben is out to care for him. But a little bop totally teaches him that, at least, Ben isn't scared of him, and he should probably settle his shit for a few minutes while he gets fed and tidied.
Dominance theory in animal training is no longer regarded as best practice & is seen as outdated . Research has proved reward based training always works better.Cesar Milan the Dog Whisperer promotes dominance theory but is always getting bitten. Whereas Victoria Stilwell. ,It's Me or the Dog has never been bitten, in her 25 year career. And it doesn't take her 3 months with "the pack" to turn around the worst dogs which Cesar regularly resorts to with the biters.

Now that you’re known as a rescue ranch, you will start to get animal drop offs.
My mom did not have a rescue farm at all, but people knew she would take care of animals. Half dead ones to be exact.
You’ll be surprised how big of animals people can sneak onto your property.
A lot of the time if they made it through, and we’re healthy again they were really good animals.
Apparently in the county I’m at there has been a huge kitten problem. There have been so many hundreds of kittens dropped off in one month alone at the shelters. the county is doing free neutering trying to combat it., and it’s a month before “kitten season”
But a lot of people can’t afford their animals right now. It’s super sad.

Doing the expired produce is a great idea. If I were you I would buy minerals.
To survive of course the animals need their calories, but minerals will let them thrive. Sometimes you can buy them in bags, but a lot of times you can just get the blocks.
I lived on a farm that didnt even do any sort of animals and people would still drop animals off there. For a long time there was constantly at least 20 cats roaming all around the farm and I didnt mind them I really like animals but its definitely not fair for them to just be abandoned like that.
Ben’s presentation is just… just perfect. Sure that wild farm boy golden retriever energy is the first thing to hit. But if you look even a bit closely he sets so many healthy middles grounds when it comes to caring for the animals vs making peace with the fact you can’t save everything and nature is wild. Giving some ribbing to maybe a few detractors without really coming off as scolding, but staying firm in his own experience. Plus just the general resourcefulness, like wanting to work with restaurants, the tractor, the watering system. It’s absolutely insane how much the ranch has changed in just a few weeks for the better. Just all round very impressive. Love this man.
