Just came after watching the "Seeing Boston from afar" video. The effort you put into your videos is very admirable and im hoping to see more like it in the future. Great stuff and keep up the good work, very entertaining.
It is remarkable that you did this trip in an inflatable which is much more difficult than a rigid kayak. Great job! i especially enjoyed the belch-echos under the bridges.
Great video! Had no clue you could just kayak through the locks. Of course parking in Winchester aint easy either, but better than Boston! You could actually park all the way in Bedford for free, build a bike trailer for your kayak, bike the minuteman rail trail and then cutover to Lower Mystic Lake. It'd only add about an hour or so to the commute. The power plant at 21:00 is the Mystic Power Plant, which ceased operation in May 2024. It was the largest power plant in the state. It operated primarily off of LNG that it shipped in but could also operate on oil.
I've been to Boston numerous times and although I'm a Connecticut country boy, I love it there. I've never seen the city from that angle, though! I can't believe you actually attempted that, much less completed it! Again, though... the burping! 🤢
This reminded me so much of Thoreau. In his prime, I mean, before the TB took his strength. That mostly-vegan diet really provided a huge reservoir of gas, but of course there were no bridges over Walden to help him achieve that fantastic resonance, so it's a bit of an unfair advantage. I think only Julia Butterfly Hill could match you for range, admittedly from an elevated position, but then she had a lot of time to practice her gastrointestinal projection.
When I first moved to Boston for work (my office is in Back Bay literally next to the station) on the weekends id go to my apartment in Hartford because it had aur conditioning and the lease break out fee was more than keeping the apartment for 6 months. I learned it did not matter how early you started the drive, it came down to when you got to Natick, it would always take 90 minutes to do the last 19 miles to back bay.
Thank you for sharing this tour/commuter experience. As a mom, though, I havta say, We’re you outta yer damn mind?! But hey, you earned one helluva badge doing it. 👍 Safety first was an important message throughout. Edited: Were, not we're! No thanks to AI. sigh.
How many miles was that? You should get a Sea Eagle EZ-Cart for your Explorer so you don't have to carry it for the portage. The wheels will store in the kayak fine. You could also add a trolling motor or Bixpy to that. I have a Sea Eagle Paddleski 435ps kayak, and I have a powerful Torqeedo motor on it. So I can go for many times at a decent speed, not worry about winds or currents, and paddle at similar performance to the Explorer when I want.
This ended up being about 13 miles or so. If you skip to the end of the video you can see a map of my route. I do have a separate inflatable boat and a 5hp gas motor but I wanted to do this adventure as a paddle for the fun of it!

born to commute, forced to portage Mystic Lake Dam
@@ryanfrogz Haha yeah forced to paddle down the mystic river
Yeah, that was fun, seeing all that infrastructure from a different angle, that was cool - wonderful trip
@@slcwest75 Thank you for watching! Yeah it was sketchy at times but mostly quite pleasant.

@@mg222. Oh good to know thank you!
Can you imagine all the cool things in that water? Too bad you can't do some magnet fishing in some of those places.
@ZacharyCusanelli Yeah that’s a good idea! Especially around the bridges with a lot of pedestrian traffic. People dropping things in the water.
I am in disbelief. You did that. A truly terrible idea, fitting for this channel. Bravo!
