Bad ideas implemented.
Climbing Mount Jefferson in January is Most Certainly Definitely Not a Terrible Idea
Here it is, the big one. Mount Jefferson in New Hampshire, ascent took place on January 17th 2025. Wore snowshoes the whole way. Skip to the end of the video to find a map of the route as well as trail stats. The whole operation took about 9 hours or so. Some deep snow on the way up the Jewell trail really slowed us down. Took the Jewell Trail, then the Gulfside Trail to summit of Jefferson. Thanks again to professional, and highly qualified, mountain guide Brian from Synnott Mountain Guides, based in Intervale NH. Unless you are an expert mountaineer, I do not recommend doing this without professional guidance. Temperature was maybe single digits Fahrenheit or so on the ridge, with windchill being about 0. Maybe 20mph winds at most. We picked a really good day weather-wise.

You Probably Won’t Go to This Island in a Swamp. So I did.

Join me on my journey to reach an unnamed island in a swamp. There’s nothing there. I just went there for exploration. The island is located in MassWildlife’s Crane Pond Wildlife Management Area in Georgetown and Groveland MA. Hunting seems to be allowed in this area so ideally wear reflective orange when walking around during hunting season. Stay safe out there! But I mean, watch the video, th...

This ascent of Mt Madison was done with the professional guidance of Brian from Synnott Mountain Guides based in Intervale, NH. Ascent took place on January 6th 2025. Ambient temperature towards the summit was near 0 F and 40 mph winds made the windchill interesting. Proper clothes were worn and proper gear taken. Unless you are a qualified mountaineer I highly recommend using professional guid...
Trying to See Boston From Ridiculously Far Away

Mount Kearsarge is 82 miles away from Downtown Boston as the crow flies. This might be the furthest distance from which Boston is visible from the ground. Join me in my attempts to see Boston from ridiculously far away! For all these attempts I went up the Winslow Trail. I also had to walk the park road since it is closed this time of year. Roundtrip for each attempt took roughly 2 hours.

This is a story of resilience. Join me as I try to summit the formidable Charles Mound, at a whopping 1235ft above sea level, the highest mountain in Illinois. 9:11 If I could only guess, I Believe that the building in the middle of Back Bay between those 2 in back bay is the View Boston building, and the one to the far right is the 4 seasons hotel. And the one to the far right is 200 Clarendon Street. The tallest building in Boston. I Don’t know if I’m wrong, I’m just guessing.
how mystic
Bro it is so beautiful up there holy sh*t. Thanks for showing us what most people wouldn’t see.
@@Npnort0n Thank you for watching! People deserve to know what’s up there in winter.
Am I the only one who wants to know the story of Big Juicy EJ??
@@thomaslindholm4104 I too want to know the secret code of big juicy ej. But this seems like forbidden sacred knowledge withheld from humanity by some higher power.
@@terribleideas2 I'm picturing someone discovering this video and exclaiming to the computer screen, "That's me! I'm EJ!" Maybe an Eli Jones or Eric Jackson, or maybe even Elena Jimenez 🤔

@@bmeowshall Oh yeah I realized later I got it wrong hahaha. Thanks for the correction!
Stumbled on your channel. I used to do these sorts of walks in obscure areas of CT and more recently MA. Unfortunately I now have a condition that severely limits my mobility. BTW - Crane river has kayaking “hiking trails” through the marshes that are accessible in summer.
@@mattkosakowski7582 Im sorry to hear that. I often think what would happen if I found myself in a situation like that, and Im yet to come up with an answer. I know it will happen one day, and I won’t be happy about it when it does. I hope you are doing ok and managing ok with this life transition. Trying to find new ways to have a good time
@@terribleideas2 Thanks! More than anything it makes me appreciate the little events, like taking a Wednesday off at the last minute to go to Good Harbor beach with the family. So glad I did that. The old cliche is true that the only people who will remember the extra hours and days you worked are your family. But you can adapt if you maintain positivity. I'm still working on that.
@ Yes it is a reality that I will have to face eventually so Im preparing for it. It is true that family and loved ones are most important. Stay positive and keep moving, whatever level of movement is possible!

If the Earth was flat on a really clear day you could see Mount Kilimanjaro from there.
@@wbbartlett Yeah if only the earth was flat.
Because FREEDOM. Well done sir.

Neat. I've seen it naked eye from Pack Monadnock, although that's but a pitiful 54 miles away. Curious what the greatest possible distance is for any city anywhere.
@@sabretooth1997 Yeah me too, the answer might be on heywhatsthat.com
On the one hand, I probably won't go here. On the other hand, it's, like, 8 miles from my house. There are coyotes around here--I saw one scratching itself in my front yard once. They make weird noises.
@@MattMcIrvin Yeah there are a surprising number of coyotes in MA! Thank you for watching!
Nice! Once at Quabbin Reservoir, I was able to see downtown Hartord, CT. The distance (as the crow flies) is 40+ miles away. The photo I took was in a lookout tower.

@@slcwest75 Yes winter hiking comes with risks that need to be mitigated.
I’ve seen Boston from the top of Mount Monadnock.
@@MikeJamesHayden Me too! That is exactly what inspired me to make this video.
Yeah, that was fun, seeing all that infrastructure from a different angle, that was cool - wonderful trip
@@slcwest75 Thank you for watching! Yeah it was sketchy at times but mostly quite pleasant.
Kind of an interesting video, just keep in mind that state markers and property markers are a thought up social construct created by colonial period land surveyors and would have meant nothing to the native Americans that were here for generations before European settlers
@@slcwest75 I mean yes you are totally right about that.
Does the AT go through there. I saw white blazes.
@@Rightiswrong-qv5ul No it doesn’t, because it’s too far out of the way I guess
Absolutely beautiful. There's a tranquility utterly unique to pristine, freshly snowy environments like this. I had a terrible idea myself once and tried (and failed) to climb a remote mountain in Pittsburg, NH last April to view the solar eclipse. I'll never forget sitting down for a rest surrounded by nothing snow-covered pine trees, miles away from any semblance of civilization, and hearing nothing but the faint whisper of the wind. That memory and this video makes me want to do it again lol
Yeah the tranquility of a snowy wonderland is unmatched in my opinion. Just gotta be well equipped for the cold.
80 miles is about 130km So basically, sometimes if weather allows, i can clearly see mountains from my place... 170km away ~ 105 miles. Its the same story. Everything around is flat, and the mountains just rise up from nowhere, with about 600-800 meters (0.4-0.5 mile) incline. It's funny really. Because those mountains are strictly connected with wather here. Wind and snow/rain cannot really stop on anything but trees, because it's so flat, so it's not so hard to have 60-100 km/h wind gust (40-60 miles/h)
What region do you live in? Near the rockies I am guessing?
Poland in Europe 😃
@ Oh yeah I was totally wrong but yeah you have the Tatra mountains over there no? Very cool
Friggin eye of sauron you did indeed find it

Give the people what they came here for- nonsense monologues occasionally interrupted by loud belching
Will be right back to that. Unfortunately I have to act semi-normal when Im on a mountain with a guide in the middle of nowhere. I have to prove that I am mentally fit for this undertaking.
I think I will nope out of that

I feel like the answer might be obvious, but can you see Manchester?
@@ManFaceManYes I saw a smoke plume in the foreground one of the days I was up there. That might be manchester.
When I first moved to Boston for work (my office is in Back Bay literally next to the station) on the weekends id go to my apartment in Hartford because it had aur conditioning and the lease break out fee was more than keeping the apartment for 6 months. I learned it did not matter how early you started the drive, it came down to when you got to Natick, it would always take 90 minutes to do the last 19 miles to back bay.
Yeah traffic is rough. MBTA needs to do something or we will all perish
