HOLY SHIT I WAS LITERALLY JUST LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM AS I WAS CHECKING UA-cam AND WISHING YOU HAD REACTED TO IT One of my favorite albums of all time, absolutely beautiful.
Dunno if you'd entertain a live record, but Portishead live at Roseland is incredible. The live renditions really elevate their music, especially w the addition of a string section. Beth Gibbons also gotta be one of the most badass vocalists
PJ harvey definitely deserves attention! But I think the best introduction to her work will be the album “To Bring You My Love”. Although each of her albums sounds so different from the last. personally my favorites are "White chalk" and "Stories from the city"
I think in order to understand PJ Harvey, you must listen to her albums chronologically. She's similar to Radiohead in that regard. It's so satisfying to see her evolution.
I adore Rid of Me but I think either Stories or To Bring You My Love are the easier albums to start with in terms of PJ. But listening chronologically is good too since her sound has evolved so much and she keeps experimenting on nearly every album.
Third is not only my fav Portishead album, but my favorite album in general. It's just so special and brilliant in every way. I hope you react to their self-titled soon.
In a similar vein to Portishead, I would recommend listening to Broadcast. More of a 60's psych vibe but still has that haunting female voice over awesome and complex and often creepy electronics. You are good to start with Tender Buttons, HaHa Sound or Noise Made by People as all are good starting points.
@@carlcarlson1883 agreed on HaHa Sound probably being the best starting point on the band. It was mine back in the day hearing it off of Pandora station seeded with Stereolab. Really love those first 3 equally. The Spell Blanket demos comp that just dropped is spectacular but definately NOT a starting point.
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH POOPYHEAD FINALLY BRIO IVE BEEN WAITING SO LLNG!!!! THANK U one of my fav parts of this album is the crazy ass transition between silence and hunter. what an insanely brave choice to have that build up just cut of and snap you back to reality
Thank you SO much for reacting to this one! One of my favourite albums of all time. Very happy that you vibed with it too. It sets a very specific mood that only a handful of albums I've heard even approach. For other albums that have a similar kind of claustophobic and oppressive atmosphere I can recommend Swans' The Great Annihilator and The Microphones' Mount Eerie. Both are amazing, btw And as for more Portishead, I recommend their self-titled and then Roseland NYC Live. Specifically in this order! The self-titled is like Dummy's angrier and a bit less likeable brother but is still worth your time. And their live album is legendary and is generally considered to improve upon many of s/t's tracks. I wonder if you'll agree
YES. fucking finally. This is my favorite Portishead album, really one of my favorite albums ever. Its just so soaked in eeriness, theres a powerful sense of dread in every song
So cool to see you review this one, takes me back to when this came out. I remember listening to this for the first time, it felt completely insane - I had absolutely no idea where any song was going, the structures are so unpredictable and wild. And the album is just so DARK! It's one of my favorite albums of all time, and I discover something new every time I listen. I hope you get a lot of good listens out of this, it's definitely worth a bunch of repeat listens. Magic Doors is my personal favorite, that sax solo seriously feels like the entire world is ripping apart, it's just a wonderfully chaotic listen. Keep up the great reviews!
For me i discovered Portishead thanks to machine-gun but instead of because of it being sampled i discovered them because that song was used in some of the metro video game trailers
Rather than go to their second album, I recommend the "Roseland NYC Live" album that they released around the same time. They played with a full string orchestra. It is one of the best concert albums that I know. And it has all of the highlights of the second album (better played too), plus some unique takes on some of the better "Dummy" tracks.
Third is my personal favorite of their albums. Dummy is the iconic one for Portishead for sure but to my ear sounds a bit time capsule-ish to the 90’s with the DJ scratches and some of the synth patches. They dug deep into the well for Third though…lots of old-school analog synths mixed with great live instrumentation…and it sounds timeless and fantastic for their efforts.
I usually loop it starting from "We Carry On", because the second half of the album is flawless imho, and it flows beautifully into "Silence". There are too many things to love in this record once you get down on your knees and start begging for some chalkboard scraping... Third is so sweet in its glorious abrasiveness...
I always complaint because all reactors only go for their first album but they never get up to Third, which for me is their best because it sounds so dirty and dark. Glad you enjoyed this! If you're taking suggestions I'd love to see you continue through the Burial path, you're seriously missing out on his EPs Street Halo, Kindred and Truant.
A priceless beautiful album, the eleven tracks are so unique, each one on its own way, Beth's voice is beyond anything here, like a goodness, instrumentals are crazy sometimes and ethereal others. I love Portishead and I love third My favs : Nylon Smile, Small, Magic Doors
Album recommendations: Waiting to Spill- The backseat lovers When we Were Friends- The backseat lovers Something you needed- Flipturn Shadowglow- Flipturn Songs- Adrianne Lenker Unreal Unearth- Hozier Close to Paradise- Patrick Watson Young Americans- David Bowie Everything so far- Pinegrove RMCM- Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners Good For You- Houndmouth The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We- Mitski
Great, my favourite album, thanks! Let's stay still with trip-hop, please - what about *UNKLE* and the Psyence Fiction album? It had great reviews at the time of release (1998).
Third was one of those albums that is unique and just sets a mood. Love this album. If you want a challenge, try the band Can - Ege Bayasi, Tago Mango, or Future Days. All very unique in their own ways, and very experimental in their sound, but the beat is kept smooth and at times funky by their excellent drummer Jaki Liebzeit (RIP).
you should check out deceit by this heat at some point, its a post-punk classic imo and its super weird and proggy. my favourite videos of yours are the ones where you listen to a slightly weirder album !!
I would love you to review an album by KIRSTY MACCOLL only I just can't decide which, probably her 1981 debut 'Desperate Character'. My fave two bars are "I put you on a pedestal, You put me on the pill." She was a huge talent. Maybe don't google her prior to listening though, it will taint your enjoyment. Xx
Creepy/ Dark /Menacing. It's amazing the dark atmosphere they create with this album. My favorite Portishead album by far, i feel so badass when i listen to it ❤
Threads is most likely nspired by the British movie from 1984 Threads. That ending, like the movie is absolutely terrifying. An alarm before the apocalypse. At this I gotta recommend you the s/t (1979) by This Heat, different genres but same unsettling vibes, maybe some influence too; also, since Steve Albini (producer of In Utero and many important Alt rock albums) passed away a week ago you should react to Atomizer by his influential band Big Black. All pretty disturbing and noisy albums
hocus pocus ive watched like most of ur reactions and been here since the dean blunt reaction vroooo pls react to xuvetyn by loveliescrushing it could compliment your song writing i think because its really dreamy and could give you ideas for further creation i love your latest release a lot
Everyone talks about Dummy and Third, but my fav from them is accualy the self titled. Must hear.
Totally agree!
Only You is one of my fav Trip-Hop tracks ever
SUPER UNDERRATED album!
It's got the hardest beats.
I saw them on the tour for self titled..most memorable live experience of my life and I've seen some legends
Let's goooo I never see any reactions to third. I consider it their best personally
HOLY SHIT I WAS LITERALLY JUST LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM AS I WAS CHECKING UA-cam AND WISHING YOU HAD REACTED TO IT
One of my favorite albums of all time, absolutely beautiful.
Was just humming “We Carry On” when I opened up UA-cam to this in my recommended
Also We Carry On is pretty much evil Silver Apples
@@dogmanbitehurt8243 They played live with simeon so that confirms it.
We need Massive Attack - Blue Lines and Madonna - Ray of Light
I would adore a “Ray Of Light” reaction from Smags
AND I FEEEEELLLL
HEAVVYYYYYY on ray of light!!!
I'd rather have him listening to Protection honestly
Dunno if you'd entertain a live record, but Portishead live at Roseland is incredible. The live renditions really elevate their music, especially w the addition of a string section. Beth Gibbons also gotta be one of the most badass vocalists
He might need to hear self-titled first in order to fully appreciate the live album. The live renditions of those songs are excellent.
Rid of Me by PJ Harvey next!
good recommendation
PJ harvey definitely deserves attention! But I think the best introduction to her work will be the album “To Bring You My Love”. Although each of her albums sounds so different from the last. personally my favorites are "White chalk" and "Stories from the city"
@@alalulu4503 To Bring You My Love was my favourite PJ Harvey album for a long time. But then she released Let England Shake...
I think in order to understand PJ Harvey, you must listen to her albums chronologically. She's similar to Radiohead in that regard. It's so satisfying to see her evolution.

the palette of sounds across this album is absolutely insane
Im happy people are still discussing this album. Its one of a kind album
I second this recommendation! Tender Buttons is probably their most straight forward, appealing album, but my pick would be HaHa sound.
Portishead is such a good group. Anyways, you know what I'm gonna say by this point. Listen to Duck Stab by The Residents
Yes! Third is one of my favorite albums of all time, I love this band so much.

This is such an amazing album. I am always impressed by how genuine and hurt it feels :( just really RAW
Portishead is so awesome! Also, Beth Gibbons the vocalist will release a solo album this friday!
Probably my most hyped album right now. The singles have all been outstanding
Thanks for the tip.
It is a must listen. Perfect album
Machinegun is such a trip. Have always loved that song.

Possibly my favorite Portishead album. Stunning.
Mine too. Love how dark and experimental it sounds.
o começo do álbum em português é o grande charme, sempre escuto essa faixa
One of my favorite albums of the 2000s
The rip is one of the best songs ever...
one of my favs ever, imo their best and most unique album
YES. fucking finally. This is my favorite Portishead album, really one of my favorite albums ever. Its just so soaked in eeriness, theres a powerful sense of dread in every song
we need this man to properly differentiate between spanish and portuguese

15:58 literally how i discovered and got into Portishead LOL. didn’t expect that haha
For me i discovered Portishead thanks to machine-gun but instead of because of it being sampled i discovered them because that song was used in some of the metro video game trailers
silver apples - silver apples (1968) is a huge influence on this album
check out broadcast - haha sound btw
Incredibly progressive album, I love it!
I love broadcast!

oh my god you have no idea how long I've been waiting for this
I’ve seen this band 2 times live.
And it’s amazing
Third is my personal favorite of their albums. They dug deep into the well for Third though…lots of old-school analog synths mixed with great live instrumentation…and it sounds timeless and fantastic for their efforts.
Really recommend their self-titled album, it's my personal favorite of the three
Just did my 50th listen of Third today, and this popped up. Hasn't left my rotation since I discovered it in December
I usually loop it starting from "We Carry On", because the second half of the album is flawless imho, and it flows beautifully into "Silence". There are too many things to love in this record once you get down on your knees and start begging for some chalkboard scraping... Third is so sweet in its glorious abrasiveness...
