As a person that grew up in St. Catharines, right next to the Welland canal, not one person I knew ever swam in these waters. There are many places to swim in the area including Lake Ontario that is 30 mins. away. Besides, the canal water is so dirty, you would need a bath after swimming in it.
I swim in the canal all the time. I feel 100% cleaner in that water than the one that comes from the shower. Tap water is filthy. The welland canal is NOT dirty and is in fact a beautiful place to scuba dive, swim and use your boat.
There was a kid back in the early 80s that swam near the spillway, he survived but is paralyzed for life, the fall broke his neck. Others have been killed. Stay out. Go to sunset Beach instead. Don't be stupid
I swim in the canal all summer and I love it. I think the canal water is so healthy for you. Did you ever swim in any areas that had strong currents? Any recommendations for good areas to swim? I swim behind the Best Western part of the canal mainly but I want to find some different spots to swim in this summer and don't want to end up in choppy waters.
@DevynYoshi Actually, for a fact-only video, I don't see how people could say any of the "acting" is bad. It's more of a documentary...they're not changing voices or anything, or trying to be in character. They're just being typical guys their age....
Well...it was probably shot out of a pipe like the one at :56-:57 into another canal or a resorvoir. I'm sure it was likely quite mangled in the process of going through the pipe, though.
@SuperTabitha22 You can see the Welland Waterways, as it is in Ontario. Canada, not the States. Welland is not far from Niagara Falls. Hope you get to see it.
I agree! A warning sign without a reason will be considered more of a challenge for most people. Don't just say it's dangerous, tell us why it's dangerous!
I took my sailboat through the locks. When they open the valves, holy crap. I mean... the waves we're pretty big and we had to hold onto the ropes to keep the boat on the side. Also, the the beginning of lock 4,5 and 6 (6:16) and they had to drain it. We we're tied up on the dock. The waves we're so strong our ropes almost snapped.
Well the warning signs really seem shitty. Here in Europe it would have been marked much clearer / had a fence there to prevent from even entering there,
A neat canal system semi - closeby in the states is the Erie Canal system in Western NY. But yes, this is southern Ontario, Canada, just across the border, not hard to access really.
Why don’t they implement the same standard of warning signs that they use near OPG hydro dams - I think having a sign describing the full severity of the risk of drowning is a lot more effective than just a simple no swimming symbol
There's typically (especially after 9/11/2001) plenty of signage stating "no trespassing", not that that's too warm of dangers, but your technically not supposed to be there in the first place.
I don't even jump into Lake Erie >.> God knows Buffalo's canal is just a river of rust... I can't believe kids swim in that place. Especially after we found out what happens after a heavy rain O_O YUCK!
@kossfringe Thank you Koss for that astute assessment. However I clearly referenced that I was speaking of Buffalo's canal, not the welland canal. If it means anything, my Grandfather & Grandmother (who lived in St. Cathy's, but now lives in North Bay) took me to see the ships all the time. :-] However, as I said - you guys have inviting swimming holes. Lake Erie is just a cesspool and our canals are just pure unadulterated evil. They aren't even inviting, just... evil.
I LOVE swimming in the Welland canal and I am so glad I watched this and know what parts NOT to go to.
Great advise!!!
Good information … probably valid today (2023) … but should be updated to reflect the current safety precautions in effect today.
Whose watching in 2020?
Well, revisiting in 2021 actually.

I grew up swimming in the Welland Canal in Welland. I’m still alive and didn’t catch any dangerous diseases. Where people get these ideas is beyond me

Canals freak me out for some reason. :/
The only one that bothers me is the Hydro Canal in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Yikes! Good luck getting out if you fall into that one.
@@andicus1 Used to swim in that all the time
Damn, I used to swim in the old canal near a boat launch back in the day.
awesome!

Warning signs should explain WHY. Hidden dredgers can pull you under ......that would put people off.

Hey the rush how did we not die
Looks a very interesting place. I'd love to pay it a visit if I am ever in the States.
An excellent and very informative video guys.
Many thanks.
Its in Canada

looks like a nice place for a dip :)

2:23 Actually no. That looks scary AF! 😂
i think i shit myself when i saw the life size dummy go down the whirlpool :o!!
22 degrees is the high in june?...
can you mark in google earth were thorold vortex is?
Dont see a danger jumping into a pool where water is discharged into but not one that is discharging with unseen intakes dragging swimmers in.
fatwalletboy2 it can cause a recirculating current, though you are right, it is less dangerous than the intake side of the canal
Sure would like to see this reuploaded with a better bit rate.
Well, sadly, looks like it was recorded with a VCR. I don't think anyone locally is up to the task of freshening that up.
I have it on very good authority that that line was actually adlibbed. No writing required.

it's not call rope it is call line
Really, who goes "I am going to go swimming in a shipping canal"?
People of Thorold, Ontario. ;) I should mention, the old canal, which is directly connected to the current canal
"these waters suck... literally"
WHO WRITES THIS STUFF?! lol
The weir ,in port colborne, when I was a kid ,terrified. Very fast water. Guess still dare devils ,think they can still beat it. I remember a person
rofl, right here, just 15 ft away from where i'm sitting........rofl
thats y i dont swim or jump off the bridge into the canal
I think this was a school project and they're obviously joking....please tell me they're joking. On another note...Great place to go dirt biking!
M.A. K I'm pretty sure that if you went swimming there you would drown so yes I think there being serious
M.A. K why don’t you go see for yourself (don’t)
I would have said "listen" to the signs, rather than "obey" the signs. and the kids aren't naturals..
I hope they got a razzie for worst short documentary
@fathippy2
trolled..
sceary
Who the fuck would swim in here. The water is nasty.
