  • As expected my most recent video about the Zinwell ATSC 3.0 tuner not working as advertised generated quite a bit of a response. I heard from a few viewers who had a different and more positive experience and also from Channel Master who markets the device in the USA. See the original video: • They lied? Thanks for various tests and updates , including the link to the Denver area user's video. I can easily understand the printed Quick Start Guide be incorrect/out-of-date, but your CT area tests and the Denver area tester indicate real problems. I'm considering buying the $60 GT-media USB tuner just to try out the unencrypted NYC station(s?). Start with Android on Windows 11. If that combo doesn't work, blow another $20 and get the Walmart ONN android box...

The zinwell device has only been out for about a month. It's not uncommon for just released products to still need some more work. Combine that with the fact that atsc 3.0 is generally only being used by early adopters with high end TVs. I'd say it is too soon to call it a mess given how short the product has been available and how few people are using atsc 3.0. This experience is what early adopters often experience, and it is how stuff gets fixed before it goes to the masses. Now, if someone is just against drm in general, it's easy to be motivated to see it all as a mess. All of the streaming services use the same widevine drm, and they have it all sorted out for using on most any device. I'd say fairness requires giving more time to let the issues be sorted out.

@@LonSeidman Fair enough. Given that broadcast networks in general (and over-the-air distribution in particular) have less interested consumers than ever, the broadcast industry might not have the incentive to move as fast as they otherwise would if over-the-air distribution was still the primary delivery mechanism, or if 1.0 simulcasts weren't sill being broadcast, or if there was robust consumer demand for atsc 3.0. The drm system for astc 3.0 is much more akin to blu-ray drm than original dvd drm. Any modern drm system will have a renewable component, not a single embedded key like dvd had. If a system is to be renewable, it must have access to two-way communication. Any modern device will require firmware updates, which again is most efficiently done using two-way communication. The de facto means for two-way communication is the internet. It might be unreasonable to expect any modern embedded device to never use the internet for this communication. If the zinwell device can mostly work with only the occasional need for this two-way communication, that would be the unusual case. And It is certainly less onerous than always requiring an internet connection.

Hey Lon, fellow Connecticutter here. My Zapperbox behaves the same way as your Zinwell decoder. While I’m in the NYC DMA, being in Stratford, I also receive the Hartford New Haven stations on my outdoor antenna similar to you.
I’m very glad that you’re honestly reporting your results on what’s turning out to be a sloppily and hastily-conceived plan by the broadcasters to protect their $2.5B+ retransmission fees while robbing the television-viewing public of their rights to the airwaves.
I have no objection to the billionaires making money on their privately transmitted streaming services, but when they try to hold our airwaves hostage with DRM, then they get my dander up.

@BrunodeSouzaLino I don't think it's the licensing fee, that is a one time cost, DRM is to keep the advertising dollars coming in, the broadcasters don't want you to have the ability to skip commercials, it lowers the price they can charge for commercial time, and at the time millions are dropping cable and they are losing retransmission fee, they need advertising dollars to stay in business.

    • @alextirrellRI

      @Michael-Joseph123 5 місяців тому +2

@igeekone the problem is, cable tv is dying, everytime someone drops cable, the broadcasters lose a retransmission fee, some customers they lose go with a live streaming service that have local station and still pay the retransmission fee's, but many dont. On a Facebook group that deals with antennas, there are a few posting on there that they could not get ota stations, or was missing some networks until atsc 3.0 was being broadcasted, so it didn't make it as hard as possible for them, it made it possible, if they ever get all the tv manufacturers to buy in, it should be plug and play.

    2. have DVR capability (SD card, flash drive, hard drive??)
    3. have a channel guide (24 hr minimum)
    4. have ad skipping (or maximum 15 sec ad before skip)
    5. have ability to do OTA updates similar to smartphones.

Actually what it's all about is to put an end to locast clones which is completely stupid because it already defeated itself by just plugging it into a regular capture card to record the video even if it had the HDCP enabled you can still get around that, all this ignore is making a bigger mess for everyone in the long run now we'll have to go back to doing things like we used to do with cable and satellite receivers, But unfortunately I think the days OTA is going to die anyway as more and more people are just going online and using free streaming services so all this local broadcasters and large media companies that own them are just ****** themselves over.

    • @destructodisk9074

I doubt this was intentional by the regulators that have control of these rules. They are just clueless and trying to appease corporations while at the same time implementing some set of consumer protections that their job entails. However on the broadcaster's side, yeah most likely intentional chaos and giving regulators false information that they can't just use an open signal because "so and so bad thing will happen".
Main issue is regulators generally aren't educated in the technologies they oversee and they feel obligated to listen to the industry. Consumer lawyers should be guiding these rules, not the broadcasters.

The fact that they are likely to fix two stations in CT and then declare "No Problemo" is exactly what the rest of us fear. Every time some new engineer reconfigures something wrong there is going to be no mechanism to get the station to fix things. They clearly need some government regulator to force every station to test/support their deployment every time consumers get blocked by DRM. They don't want to do this because it's expensive, but some financial burden needs to be placed on DRM deployment to reflect the public interest. Cable companies understood this cost in the CableCARD days, and ultimately managed to deploy a pretty stable solution. The broadcasters that see ATSC 3 DRM as "cheap and easy" need to realize that's an example of industry over hype.

Makes me wonder how this encryption actually works. Maybe the DRM works like website security certificates, where there is a Root CA that is stored in your web browser. So the tuner box ships out with a few root CA's, and maybe those TV stations don't use the correct root cert causing this issue. I would've loved to sniff the internet traffic to see what comes over the wire while it's updating to allow new TV channels. What servers do these boxes connect to? What data is it receiving? etc.

2: DRM may be used between the hours of 1am to 5am for testing purposes, not to exceed 20 hours/month.
3: A year before the moratorium expires, a report must be done to determine the status of device support for DRM, and any Internet, privacy (tracking, etc...), reliability, and other issues.

This is insane. I can take my ATSC 1 TV (or an ATSC 1 box) anywhere in the county and it will pick up all the channels in that area. But with ATSC 3, you can buy a TV or box and then not know whether it will work without stations in your area spying on you by requiring an Internet connection, or whether it will work at all with your channels. No one should buy ATSC 3 devices.

This move to a new standard will create so much e-waste either buy a 100 buck box to get a couple years more out of your tv. When tv breaks you toss them both out and replace tv or you chuck your old working tv now and buy a new tv.

  • @jcurnutte2007
    @jcurnutte2007 5 місяців тому

Hmm could it be on a station to station basis where not all ATSC 3 stations are not sending the encryption keys out over the air and they are being sent out over the Internet because there are way too many keys out there to be loaded in the box at the factory so like firmware it has to be loaded from the Internet in order to work properly and then it can get the keys from the station (because the TV stations are afraid that if the authorization keys are sent out over the air that pirates could copy them and use them to decrypt the channels without proper authorization) because the TV stations want their keys verified by an Internet server before they are loaded into the box (because once loaded the TV station can update the keys at anytime without having to go through Internet verification because the box has already been verified to get those keys over the air) in other words the TV stations have added their own layer of security to what is already out there and instead of having it sent out over the air when you set up the box for the first time they want you to connect to the Internet so the TV station can verify that your box is capable of decoding the signals using the keys they send out

The problem with how everybody is looking at this is wrong, seems like most everybody is looking at this like the company is telling everybody that it will work without internet to fool them, I think that it has some bugs to be worked out so it will work without internet, atsc 1.0 will not be shut down until the 0.1 stations can be watched over atsc 3.0 without a internet connection, and television in homes have hit a certain percentage of tv's with atsc 3.0 tuners, and there are affordable converter boxes that do not put a financial burden on low income family's they already said at the earliest that atsc 1.0 can be shut down is in July of 2027, and at that time they are going to review it and see if a certain criteria has been met.

Stick to your guns. a TV tuner without DVR function should not require an Internet connection so ask the question why does it have an Ethernet port?
Channel Master is a good company just set up by their supplier located in Asia. I bet the unit was only tested in a lab and not beta tested in various North America markets. You would think they would have sent a unit to Antenna Man to test before the ship date. Issues with ADTH DVR, GT Media, and even HD Homerun. Products out to the general public before firmware and software works.
And $150 for a stand alone tuner and HD Homerun sells a 4 tuner box for $200. Yes the one tuner Zapperbox is $250 but works with DRM, recording, and Dolby Sound AC4 but comes at a high cost for early adoption. This Nextgen is buyer beware at best.

OTA 4k? DRM OTA 4k NEXTGEN-TV will never happen because of not enough bandwidth. 12 Reasons why OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail. Just say NO to (DRM). Tell your USA Government about the Hostile Takeover of (OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV) issues listed below.
OTA DRM ("over the air" Digital Rights Management) Encrypted TV Station's signals. Why?
Some 3.0 tuners at this time require you stay on the internet to decode DRM 3.0 TV Stations. Why?
3.0 Currently no 4K and you only get the Simulcasted main channel and no sub channels.
Channel Crawling = super slow channel changing (DRM 5 + seconds slow).
No sound because of Dolby AC4 audio codec does not have a legal open source license to decode legally on many devices.
Some 3.0 tuners have Out of sync audio to video problems.
Private Home Networked OTA antenna tuner boxes like (Tablo TV box) can not get official certified approval for DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV. Why?
You may need non OTA home pay internet for updates and to unlock DRM encrypted ATSC 3.0 tv channels.
Possible DRM restrictions on DRM ATSC 3.0 recordings and no viewing anywhere on any device with no sound.
Emergency alert messages can not be received if DRM is blocking them.
OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail because the FCC is not going to turn off ATSC 1.0 TV stations for many years if not enough people buy 3.0 TVs and 3.0 boxes.
No one has solve the problem of no government money for free DRM 3.0 TV tuner boxes because 1.0 TV turners and recorders will not work after that TV Station switches to 3.0 TV broadcasts.
(Range and signal error correction) OR (more sub channels and near 4k picture) trade off problem.
FCC is not forcing any 1.0 TV Stations to move over to 3.0 TV. So some TV stations will be on 1.0 and others will be on DRM 3.0.
The FCC is only allowing OTA Simulcasts of the ATSC 1.0 main channel at this time on DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV.
DRM ATSC 3.0 is a not finished product and is a work in progress mix of unproven ideas that has never gotten full FCC approval at this time.
Software updates for 3.0 tuner boxes may be needed for changes made to the unfinished and future added new official ATSC 3.0 standards modules.
Patent License problems. LG no longer sells TVs with ATSC 3.0 tuners.
Some 3.0 TV tuners companies may go out of business or stop updates leaving you with no DRM or software updates.
OTA ATSC 3.0 is better but is not perfect and still can be affected by weak tv signals: (distance, weather, planes, trees, buildings, trucks, poor antenna, etc).
FCC rules that 5 percent of old ATSC 1.0 coverage area does not need to be covered anymore = (SHORTER RANGE).
Viewing zone outside of your 15 minute city or town could be blocked.
Your TV viewing habits could be tracked by your serial number or IP address.
ATSC 3.0 is updatable until it is not updatable without new hardware tuners (ATSC 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0......).
Some of these 3.0 TV issues may be fixed over time.
This is only some of the mess with DRM ATSC 3.0 TV.
This is my opinion why DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail.
IMO. Stay on OTA 1.0 TV until DRM is removed from OTA ATSC 3.0 by law.
It is the people versus the hostile takeover by private DRM 3.0 TV stations for control over the USA public airwaves.
    IMO 2024.
    .
