We have the Andes cordillera running thru the country end to end South to North of course and there are a number of spectacular peaks thruout that range. Of particular note is what are called the Alpes of Peru, the mountains in Huaraz Peru. Our mountains tend to be a little bit dryer so we don't see the endless green meadows like you have. See here the Wiki page on that :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huaraz

You're welcome Dan! Let me know if you do come out this way, I'll try to give you some tips on traveling here in Peru. Also meant to mention on the mineral collecting side that over the years I have complied a list of the minerals found here in Peru by locality - provincia, distrito and mine name. It's no Mindat resource, but it's pretty comprehensive. @@danvoznak

Quite spectacular. Was it the toponyms that made you look there or you already knew/read that good sized garnets could be found there?

I checked it on a website called Mindat, also Ötztal is kind of famous locality in geological community.

Spectacular views and really nice finds! Is it a long hike from the Hohe Mut 2 cable car station? We are in the region right now and would love to do some hounding ourselves.

      Thanks a lot!
You can get to the foot of Gaisbergferner in 1 hour from the cable car, however if you want to find nice specimens, you need to go up under the Granatenkogel as seen in the video.
This will take you whole day :)

I was in the vicinity last week. Sadly, I'm nowhere near experienced enough to get close to the Granatenwand... But I did find some smaller, (slightly) blemished garnets on the path leading up to the glacier. Finding them made my day, I'm so happy.
I hope I'll be able to return in the future, get closer, and find some bigger and better pieces.

@@danvoznak Alps will already have snow in October?? Damn I thought it would be November-ish..so the area you found these garnets will already be covered? Yes I am familiar with mindat but it never really helped me..was confusing..do the garnets wash down far enough that the snow has not covered any of them downslope?

Zdravím, budu do půlky září v Iráku, takže Alpy mi letos bohužel nevyjdou...
