Archaeological excavations in the western Thessalian plain have documented a city of 2,500 years. During the survey-recording and recording that took place in September 2016 at the top and the immediate slopes of the hill "Strongylovouni" in Vlochos of the Municipality of Palamas in Karditsa, towers, walls and gates of the city were identified at the top and slopes of the hill. .
The archeological site of Vlochos has of course a long history in research as it has been known since the 19th century. The first reference to the area was made by W. Leake (Travelers in Northern Greece, vol. IV, 1835). This was followed by J. L. Ussing (Rejsebilleder fra Syden, 1847), whose observations have been the main source of information for at least 150 years. Then Léon Heuzey (Excursion dans la Thessalie turque en 1858, 1927) visited the site in 1850, while Friedrich Stählin (Das hellenische Thessalien (1924) proceeded to identify the site with the ancient city of Piraeus. In 1960 the first excavations took place tombs in the cemetery and in 1964 the site was declared an archeological site.
It is a citadel with strong walls of exceptional preservation that develop both on the ridge of the hill and on its slopes. The walls in the plain are not visible on the surface, however, as it was found during the geophysical survey, they are kept just below the ground surface. Remains of architectural structures are also found at the top, relating to a built enclosure of unclear use at the moment, as well as to the foundations of buildings. The urban fabric of the ancient city extends mainly in the plain area, at the "Floor" location, as visible architectural remains are preserved in the area. Finally, the oldest rescue excavations in the area by the then competent Ephorates have revealed the remains of houses and parts of the fortification (unpublished material).
