Let me know what your top Discus tips are below in the comments!
I thought it was interesting that they are sort of grazers
Have your pigeon blood discus always been on a light colored substrate? I’ve only just started researching discus and someone mentioned they felt the peppering happens more on a dark substrate
How many tetras in that tank?
Good lord that’s a beautiful tank. A show piece for sure!
I'm thinking about getting back into discus. Beautiful tank. I'm surprised you didn't bring up discus aggression since there was some chasing in the video. Certainly not as violent as the ACs I've been keeping. Thanks!
Your tank is absolutely stunning. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you. Great work!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I enjoyed watching the discus as I was listening to you and it was super relaxing.
I enjoyed just watching this tank. Beautiful aquascape and fish.
Thanks!
Just need lil more plants on the rightside ,but this is the best tank Ive seen!amazing
A great looking tank. Returned to Discus about 6 months ago after a few years of mixed results. I have 15 beautiful Punchard discus, with 3 pairs, sometimes spawning at same time! Things l have done differently, bigger tank 750L plus 200L sump, no tank mates except 3 Geophagus to turn substrate over, stricter tempreture regulation, normal heaters fluctuate a lot, 28.5 C. No plants but lots of bogwood most suspended like roots, tannins are great seem to have anti bacterial qualities, suffered from bacterial infections previously. Heavily insulated tank, keep costs down. I know this isn't possible for everyone but if you can get water & a drain to tank a constant drip system is wonderful, keeps nitrates almost negligible, so no slaving over water changes, just a substrate vac once a week.
Discuses have no particular environment other than the tank itself. Where they are located is adaptable to your situation. Discus can adapt to almost any environment as long as that environment has consistent elements of traffic, noise and your interaction with your fish. Maintenance, Water changes and feeding are all important activities that build trust. If you are netting your fish and scaring them more than necessary, each time you approach the tank your fish will be suspect about why. If you make the experience a good one you build trust. Plan long term for your fish so that they can continue throughout their life cycle to experience the same environment and not disrupt their life experiences and patterns. This is True with all Tropical fish but some more than others. Discus fish are in that category where great care in planning a safe and stable environment yields the best results. They are not that fragile, they just need your trust. Good Luck!
well said

@@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto Wow talk about poaching viewers 🤣 Having seen this I've just unsubed your channel
Super elegant, you are not only a discus hobbyist but also a good aqua designer.
Just came across your video as I’m interested to keep fish again after I gave up keeping tropical marines.
Beautiful tank I must say, and good advice too.
Hi mate - Another great video and some solid tips for 'Discus Neebie's. Not mixing discus from Malaysia and Stenker is good solid advise. I separate the two strains right from breeding pairs to grow out. Prevents any nasties cross contaminating. Again when it comes to TDS and PH just consistency is best and as fewer chemical interventions to water as possible. Although I am a sucker for sponge filters. Regardless of which sump or canister system I'm using EVERYTHING must have a sponge (in my humble opinion) I love the sponges almost as much as you love overfilling tanks 😃
I like a sponge too - run a few in the sump!
I dont actually like flooding tanks - i'm just really good at it!😉
Super glad I found a channel that talks about Discus 🐠 great video man 👍🏼
Thanks! Lots of other Discus related vids on my channel too!
I’m sure Checking your videos ☝🏼👍🏼
Just other question what colour of back ground film can make the discus can be destressed, I saw a vedio for a chines prof. Who is keeping one gold fish fanstail as cleaning fish. What do you think?
Thanks
Trying to find american spec HMA discus replacement filters and who would ylou suggest for stenker discus as I am setting up my second discus tank already have 15 various in a 5+2+2 thanks charlie the borders
Nice set up! I agree with the advice except the mixing wilds with hybrids. I've done this before with no issues whatsoever. I plan on adding wild Altums and greens to my 125g. 👍🐠
Look forward to seeing that Steve! Good to see you back 👍
Nice setup.👍
Beautiful tank and Discus. Is a sand substrate helpful to low ph. I have very hard water? Was thinking R O water? What Ph is your tank?
Perfect tank
You have an amazing tank :-)
Wow what a beautiful tank
What kind of pellets do you feed them in the video?
The Discus look nice!
Any tips on keeping sand that clean? I use pool filter sand and can’t seem to keep it white and clean
The gray with blue fin is so nice
Those are very cool!
Thanks!
What is the strain name of the blue discus in the video?
do they do well if we listen to music??
Hey just so you know its really hard to hear you unless my volume is all the way up and I'm wearing headphones! But your tank and discus are beautiful!!
OK thanks for letting me know - I'll keep an eye on it.
Most I have seen that have peppered I like black and red look good together
What types of plant is there. Nice tank
I like to keep discus, tetra, sword tail and cory catfish or kuhli loach. My main attraction would be the discus. I build a 40 gallon tank. How many discus can I put? The size of the discus would be intermediate. Please give me your opinion. That would be so much help. Thank you
I like your discus display think. I’m planning to buy six new discuses all 6 inch in size. I have 150 gal setup ( 110 gal + 40 sump). It’s establish for about eight months they are 22 Rummy-nose tetras and 15 Sterb’s corydoras. The question for you is that should I be worried if I introduce all six discuses into the tank at the same time about the ammonia spike? Thank you.
I'm in the planning stages for a Discus tank. Love this video. What kind of rock did you use?
This is 'Dragon Stone'. Good luck with your plans!
how often do you change your water and how much water change must be done?
Can I keep a pair in a 33 gal?
Great set up new subscriber Barry Manchester England 👍 👍 👍 👍
Welcome!
What are the plants called in this thank the ones in the sand in middle and left side... ps wouldn't mind knowing the name of them all as I'm stealing this scape for my new discus tanks 🤦♂️👍
I like the look to that tank. Very clean looks with minimum equipment spoiling the biotope. I had discus in my 1st tank, a Juwel Rio 300 I think, two of them paired up and bred and the others got to live in the corner!
When you do your water changes do you just use R.O water or a mixture of tap water as well to keep the PH at the right level
I don't use RO water at all.
Hi Graeme as I’m someone who has been out of the hobby for coming up to ten years obviously things change over time so I’m trying to watch and subscribe to videos from just a few fish keepers , I’ve just discovered a guy in America called sheller aquatics doing the sera discus food and unboxing review and apparently he says that sera sent him a box of different foods and other things to try and then give his findings on them through his you tube channel so as a new subscriber to you and as I finally got in touch with discus Dan in Warrington to go and meet him and see his discus and fish room I thought you may want to try sera and see what they will send you seeing you have your own fish room hope this helps
Paul from bolton Lancashire
When you change the water, how many liters of water do changed?thanks .
I change about 300l per week.
Beautiful tank. Some of your discus seem to be quite aggressive towards one another. Has that caused many issues since posting this video? Is there any particular reason for this behaviour that can be avoided?
Also I think with the amount of sand in your aquarium it would be really fun to watch some geophages in there, maybe a pair of electric blue rams or something similar.
Nice tank
Please suggest what are the plants that can be used in discuss tank sir? Is it really possible with planted tank and discuss fish ?
Echinodorus do well (Amazon Sword), as do Vallis, Anubias types. Lots of people do well with Java fern too. Basically, anything that can tolerate the heat.
How many litters is your tank please?
Does the black background give them peppering?
Few of my discus are not eating and my water parameters are fine . How would you go about this?
Need a little more info - if you use Facebook feel free to post in my Discus Newbies group - facebook.com/groups/discusnewbies/ a little easier to discuss there?
How many can be kept with 180l
What kind Ing N of comm u n I ty of fish can they live with?
What temperature is you fish tank. What temp would you recommend for community tank with discus
Hi - I would advise around 29 degrees Celsius.
Your videos have quickly become a favorite of mine! I'm transitioning my 55 gal tank from an African cichlid tank to a discus. Super stoked about it! I'd like some advice on how many tetras I can get if I have 5 or 6 discus in there too. I want to get enough for the fun schooling effect but not so much to overload the tank. I've got real good filtration & am used to the care for a slightly overstocked tank. Thank you all that are willing to share your thoughts.
Thank you! In terms of tetras I've found the rummynose to be the best as schooling tetra. I have cardinals at the moment, and they very much just seem to do their own thing! In the past I had a group of 25 rummys and they demonstrated the schooling effect really well. If you had a well filtered 55g with 6 Discus, I think you'd have plenty of room for even 100 rummys before it would be considered overstocked, maybe start with a smaller number to make sure you like them and build up from there? Sounds like a fun project, good luck!
@@AquariumAdventures thank you for your tip & response! I been having a difficult time deciding between cardinal & rummies. So much so that I've started considering both. Would it be better to choose 1 or the other?
@@marybethcambre4290 No, I think they would both add something and you could keep them together.
@@AquariumAdventures my well water has a high PH reading. I've bought an RO filter and my water is quite soft. Through water changes and some chemical help I've been able to get the PH lowered. But within a few hours to a day the PH is back up. This has been nearly a week long battle. I'm not interested and don't have live plants at this time. I'm thinking I should replace my structure with some driftwood. Do you have any other advice to stabilize my PH before my fish arrive?
@@marybethcambre4290 How high is high PH? I think bogwood could work well for you if you like the look, but PH will rise and fall through the day, and Discus can handle a wide variety of parameters. Check with whatever supplier you plan to use to see what they think, and whether they could handle it
what kind of fish are thoughs small blue glowing fish?
They are Cardinal Tetras
Hi mate. Was curious as to whether you think the aquascaper 900 would be appropriate as a tank to keep maybe 4 or 5 discus? I'm not set on the idea, just something was considering and will be considering for a good 6 months yet more than likely. Or how about something like a roma 200. Considering options, realistically though 1metre length would be the max I could accomodate. You have any personal recomendations outside those two that are no more than 1 meter length you could point me too, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
Hi - I like to suggest 5 or 6 as a minimum group of discus in a minimum 180l tank, so that could work in the aquascaper 900 (just!). You're kind of on the edge there so would really need to be on the ball with filtration and water changes etc and it would limit you in tank decoration and tank mates. The Roma, and Juwel Rio range are good options too. If you could squeeze in an extra 20cm you would get loads more options.
@@AquariumAdventures thanks mate
What are those schooling fishes?
Ive had a group of 9 Discus for about 3 weeks now but half of them almost always stay in the corner and are really shy! any tips? yes tank is cycled water is perfect and under control. theyre in 83 Gal tank that is planted. Ive tried offering them several different type of food as well and they don't eat a lot! ive checked them for any signs of parasites and ive treated them for ich. Temp 30. Thanks
Just shy - or are there any other issues, like clamped fins, dark colour etc? How old / big are they? It can take a few weeks for them to be confident.
Aquarium Adventures just shy they’re perfectly healthy and bright colors and are about 6 inches! They come out once in awhile to look for food and i monitor their swimming but in the past 3 weeks theyve spent most of the days in the same corner! And thanks for the reply
Hi what plants would be good for height as my tank 3foot deep.
Regular or Giant Valisineria? Large Amazon swords?
What size is this tank? Looks perfect. Thank you
Thanks, its 5 x 2 x 2
Your tank is amazing! I am going to use your setup for inspiration. I am getting discus soon, my tank is cycling currently. I have nitrates and higher ph from my tap, any recommendations for my situation?
Have a look at Biohome media for you filter to control / lower Nitrates - my mantra is to have a stable aquarium rather than chase specific parameters. Domestic Discus can adapt pretty well to a wide range of water parameters - but really the best advice is to find a local breeder / importer and take their advice.
Thank you so much for the reassurance. I am getting my discus from unclesamsdiscus.com, they are within 45 minutes!
Nice one - good luck, enjoy!
I use RO due to nitrates of 40ppm from tap, and high ph8.4. Also use a external filter with bio home and an internal ocean free hydra50 filter, which is a very clever filter and very popular around discus keepers which should turn ammonia into ammonium, nitrite into nitrate and nitrate into nitrogen gas, my fish could survive in tap, but hate the crusty scale you get around top of tank with very hard water.
Is it possible for me to keep only 3 or 4 in a 55 gal?
It is, but i'd recommend a bigger group of at least 6 as they do better in larger groups, and 55gal is plenty big enough
Just came across your video...and I've seen another one where you keep a black ghost knife with them. I'm new to keeping fish and I've been on forums who say I should get rid of my discus because they shouldn't be kept with BGK. What's your experience with it?
My BGKF spend almost his entire life in with my Discus - never had any problems, other than the BGKF being a destroyer of aquascapes!
@@AquariumAdventures well thats good news! Do you have any tips? I also have a bristlenose catfish and a Rainbow Shark...is this a bad mix? I got advised this should be fine but on these forums I'm being told otherwise. They are all only young and currently in a 240l tank...but I did lose a discus after a water change sadly
Can they be kept in conditoned tap water
Yes!
HI there thank you for your vedio and your advise I am new to the discus world but has quite experience in keeping other types of fish. No 6 days ago I purchased my 5 discus fishes and I have a good well setup aquarium but when I returned home the fishes are just sitting at one corner and refusing to eat, the fact my aquarium is in the salon where my Kids are playing all day.
Please advise me how can i reduse stress and make them eat.
I do not like this organic food so I bought for them tetra granulle and I will try to make my own beef heart.
What I shall do, what brand of food granulle is good .
Please give me some tips.
Thanks a lot
Nasir
Make sure ur tank is 86-88 degrees
@@jeffedwards823 thank you very much .For the advise.
Hi I have a 150x66x54 cm tank . Its planted. at the moment its got 7 medium sized angle, 3 oto , 9 cardinal. I want to put 6-7 discus 6cm size. the filter is a aquamanta EFX 406. The tank is heavily planed. Whats your view on keeping angle and discus together. Many thanks.
I've never done it - but I know many people have. It might be a bit crowded when they all grow up?
@@AquariumAdventures thanks .
Angels are food pigs and are aggressive. Do not keep them together. Not only will the angels pick all the food off the top as you put it in but they then go scavenge for the rest! Your discus will starve and likely fight with the angels.
@@LeahhJett thank you. Yah you are absolutely right :( . The only problem is I dont want to get rid of them .
@Rosen Azad Chowdhury don’t get rid of them, just get another aquarium! LOL if I was close I would take them, my 125 G is under stalked with 5 angels and 3 gouramis!
Saw a few discus at a local fresh and marine tropical aquarium and while I currently only have a 70L tank so snails and plants and an incoming Betta, my heart has been won by these big dopey dinner plates. I'm about to kick off a UA-cam spree. I haven't even bought a tank yet but i don't want to rush anything. I'm in Australia though so likely all our fish are Asian imports I can't imagine our quarantine letting in wild caught fish
are you using fine sand or gravel there?
Sand
Which light is that?
AquarienEco Full Spectrum LEDs - amzn.to/2Oc7EJu
My discus keep eating my neons and rummy noses. I am feeding them well as well. Can I do something for this ?
The basic rule is that if the fish can fit in it's mouth, there's a chance they will eat it. I've found neons too small and there is always a chance they will get eaten - Cardinals are better as they are a little larger and do well at Discus temps. Rummynose are usually fine if they are large enough when you add them.
It might be that you have to either grow out the tetras a bit more before you add them or try to source adults?
I see.
Thank you for your reply. What my discus does is that they first kill them then eat them. It's really painful to watch. Because you know discus or neons they are all fish. Thank you again for your ideas :)
Buy bigger fish
getting a 6 x 2 x 2 discus setup, and Im shamelessly going to be stealing your aquascape. fantastic info and love your channel.
Go for it! Send me a pic or video after - good luck!
@@AquariumAdventures I'm looking at the Dragon stone hard scape like you have in the tank. Approximately how many kgs of stone is there? As it's not a cheap option but very beautiful.
@@marcelazoulay7484 I think it's about 20kg
What's the size of your tank?
Glad to see you got rid of the angel fish
I've never had any angel fish?
Hello sir, what are those small fishes?
Cardinal Tetra's
Aquarium Adventures thanks man
Keeping discus is easy now. All they need is a very good filter a HMA filter for water changes and a good water change regiment.
Yep - Keep it simple!
Great video fellow Scotsman
Thanks!
Great to hear.
Aquarium Adventures how many neons u have? N how many discus can I get? I have a 5 x 2 x 2 ft tank around 500 l mate !
what PH is your water and how do you change the PH if you do manually
My PH is 7.2 or 7.3 (I must admit it has been a while since I checked). A little higher than what some people would say is "ideal" but i never make any attempt to change it. I prefer / advise stability of the water parameters is better than chasing specific values.
That's a gorgeous tank. I've a new 450l tank and torn between A) Discus, Cardinal Tetras, Corydoras or B) Moonlight Gourami, Cherry Barb, Corydoras.
Thanks! I'm a bit biased, so I'll always say Discus!
@@AquariumAdventures think I might have to save up a bit for Discus. Looked up, tank could take 6 - 8, and they arent the cheapest, €30 each in Ireland.
Then again, they are beautiful so saving a little longer might be worth waiting.
So great to find your channel, a Scottish aquarium channel!!! Been thinking about a Discus tank for a while & this is a great looking set up, congratulations! What filtration do you use & where did you get the wavemaker? Never seen one that "pulses" like that. Thanks & congratulations again.
Hi - The wavemaker is this one - amzn.to/2A3nqjt
I use a sump, filled with sponge, ceramic media and biohome for filtration. Thanks for stopping by!
Aquarium Adventures hi I did try use sump with external work fine at the moment
Do you change water daily???
No. Twice a week at most
are you not concerned the discus will start peppering with the black background?
Not really, hasn't been a problem in the last couple of years. Only really an issue with pigeon blood strains, and good quality fish seems to help too
What about water? I have hard water here and I'm considering an RODI unit.
How hard? RO water and re-mineralising is perfectly acceptable, but a lot of work - I probably wouldnt consider it unless breeding.
Well I will get back to you on that. I have yet to use my GH/ KH kit. I have measured TDS to be about 350 - 400ppm.
Our water here is famously run through limestone rock so no doubt it's on the extreme side of hard but I'd have to check.
How many discus fish should I put in a 125 gallon
I currently have 13 I think 15 would be my max but when they get older probably less but depends
Where did you get your discus from which breeder may I ask ?
All the fish in this video are from Chens - www.chensdiscus.co.uk/
Aquarium Adventures was tempted to use them went eventually to devotedly discus ( great bullet proof discus ) now though I really want to get some Martin ng discus so either I sell up or a second tank
All good suppliers / fish! Do you really need an excuse for another tank :-)
Or you can give your old ones to me to look after - you can watch them in videos!! 😂
Aquarium Adventures I sold my old vision 260 which was 6 months old for 300 quid I now wish I’d bubble wrapped it lol , I see the Martin ng pigeon snakeskin from Durham Discus on facebook they are super impressive
Yes I've seen them too - Steve at Durham Discus and Tim & Corban Discus import them together (Tim is near me in Sheffield) and they are very impressive. Hope to do a video on them soon!
Hi recently got my discus and was advised by breeder to feed frozen food witch I have been doing along with flakes but the problem I am having is it's really messy and I need to try fish out the waste as don't want it rotting in tank any advice on best way to feed frozen food with less mess? Thanks
What frozen food are you feeding?
Beef heart
Beefheart is messy, there is no getting away from it I'm afraid - I had best results with little and often.
How often do you change water in your fish tanks and what percentage of the water do you change. How many filters do you have in your fish tank .
The tank in the video has a sump underneath - but i have canisters, sponge and other DIY filters in my other tanks too. I change 50% a week at the moment.
ARE THOSE NEON TETRA OR NEON CARDINALS?
They are Cardinals, Neons tend to be snacks!
@@AquariumAdventures ahh yeah. Thanks for the heads up. I'm about to recreate a tank like this. Just preparing now. New tank arriving an a week.
me with a 40gb planted/carpeted tank. . . . so your saying there is a chance :D
Is your plants are real or fake?
All real plants
Can I have snails 🐌 in with them?
best discus tank on yt but they need some more oxygen
SCCOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTLAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SCOTLAND!!!!
Who can do water changes every day? This would hinder you going anywhere or doing anything for more than a day. They are beautiful fish but far to demanding for me. Plus their price is not cheap here. I think i will stick to hardier species. At this time I have local Bluegills , Pumpkin Seed and Longears. All very hardy requiring no heater and eat anything. They have beautiful colors. They are in my 350 gallon tank and are thriving.
I do not care buying domestic discus. I have one and I want more. But wild ones should be there where they were born. We also should care for the planet a little bit.
Can't believe you didn't mention Ph.
he did he said don't chase them stability is best
I've learned keeping the water too hot suffocates Discus because of the loss of oxygen
It's best to keep the water at a moderate level of 78-81 degrees because they have a hard time breathing in hot temps like other fish- In addition , chemicals like Safe also suffocate fish when used too often that's what I've learned thru trial and error
I agree with numbers I’ve had much more success with 10
Yes, they interact better with larger groups i find.
Aquarium Adventures diffuses the aggression
It's so hard to make out what you are saying
Hi I sent you a message on you're Instagram. Thanks
A group of 6 discus wouldn't do well in a 40 gallon
Yes they would.
@@AquariumAdventures that's pretty cramped the rule is 10 or more gallons per discus
Who's rule? I think that is a silly rule - adult or juvenile? What water change routine? What filtration? What other stocking? All reasons why that is a stupid rule.
quarantine and grow out is fine but youre talking about housing them in a 40 and having 6 fully grown discus (averaging 6 inches) in a 40 gallon means 6 and a half gallons per discus. You wouldn't put a full grown discus in a 6 and a half gallon tank so why over stock to that degree? And saying that it's a stupid rule doesn't justify your logic, explain, you may even change my mind. You're tank look fantastic btw
The only explanation I can offer is experience - I've seen many tanks of that sort of size with 6 adult discus being kept perfectly happily long term, and thriving in them. Some of them even show winners! I've known and talked to some of the best and well respected Discus specialists around and they make the same recommendations. Stendker even recommend 10 - 12 adult fish in that size tank!
I think your logic is flawed too - keeping 6 in 40 gallons is very different to 1 in 6.5 gallons.
Remember also that this is just my opinion - obviously bigger is better, but we're talking minimums here, and making no allowance for variables. If you want to keep your 6 discus with 200 neon tetras 30kg of rocks and substrate all run by one sponge filter - then I might have a different answer for you, but I feel happy recommending a minimum of 6 in a minimum of a 180l/40g.
I don't know what it is about this hobby, but I've found most of the 'rules' in fishkeeping to be either out of date, illogical or just plain stupid. Definitely not to be followed blindly! Given me an idea for a video though - so thanks for that! 👍
Can barely hear you…
I Judging from this video I suppose you only made one video because it seemed you where wisperin to someone else than your audience.
