By some miracle I still have this magnificent work of art on the original vinyl album. It has battle scars from so many wonderful nights when we were all too wasted to see straight but it will still play without skipping. I first became aware of this version of Eight Miles High around 1972 and now in 2020 it still touches my inner soul like very few others could possibly do. The range of the bass solo is amazing. This song has been dissected by myself while tripping on window pane acid, mescaline and the usual mind expanding methods back in the day and everything always goes back together quite nicely. I don’t know if laboratory grade LSD is even available currently but if tripping is something that you can wrap your head around then Eight Miles High is like an old friend worthy of a nice long visit.
@suspicionofdeceit ….. That’s the one. Long time in the seventies much people thought, it must be one member of this band, when they saw me. The fantastic Dutch drummer on this record is : Sieb Warner (The Hague, September 17, 1946, real name Siebolt Jaques Warntjes) is drummer and singer. Warner became known as a founding member of The Motions in 1964. His first professional band was Willy & his Giants. Warner was a member of The Atmospheres when he founded The Motions in 1964 with Rudy Bennett, Robbie van Leeuwen and Henk Smitskamp, and released the first single in the same year. Warner played on four albums with The Motions, until he was asked in 1969 to succeed Jaap Eggermont as drummer for Golden Earring. He would only play with the Earring for a year, and his last performance was at the first Pinkpop-festival on May 18, 1970. He was succeeded by Cesar Zuiderwijk and turned his back on music to become a civil servant in Groningen at the Informatie Beheer Groep (now DUO). He is now retired.
I first heard of this group when I saw them at a small venue in Detroit in late 1969. They did this song and I was blown away by it. At the time, they were the loudest group I had ever seen. Of course they went on to more commercial things (Radar Love), but I still loved this era.

Yes, and that puts them up there with the Stones as being one of the longest surviving groups. Maybe their history is even longer... I would go to Holland for my holidays as a kid, and would walk the streets looking for record stores and the latest Earring records. Aside from the too-long middle jamming this tune still sounds great.
Ik begreep dat Jimi Hendrix getroffen was door het basaandeel van Rinus Gerritsen alhier. Er schijnt sprake geweest te zijn dat Jimi Hendrix Rinus in zijn Experience-band wilde hebben.
Phons Bakx , I’m the typical American that only speaks English so forgive my language barrier. I became a Hendrix admirer in 1969 but I don’t see any similarities between the music of Hendrix and Golden Earring other than they are both amazing at what they do. Plus Hendrix promised to meet us in the next world, so don’t be late. Maybe someone reading this will be kind enough to interpret a few words that it all becomes clear or reasonably close. Cheers !
Squidgeyblack80 , I don’t exactly know but the volume obviously goes all the way to 11 and such low frequency feedback would require a huge amount of current to be drawn by the large tube drivers in the amps final output stage. I can’t remember the tubes part number but they typically had a very cool looking blue tint to the glow which pulsated as the load varied. At normal operating temperature, if someone made the mistake of touching a tube they would draw back a finger minus the skin that remained stuck to the tube. Lotsa energy wasted and dissipated in heat but the amp delivered a unique sound due to the use of vacuum tubes. Good times and good vibes for sure.
The original version by The Byrds is anything but ‘simple’ - it’s one of the most experimental, groundbreaking singles of the ‘60’s…mind blowing & hypnotic…Golden Earring’s version is a tremendous version but please don’t even try & detract from the brilliance of the ‘66 original
