Brilliant video, I have alwyas struggled with distance and DOF so this was very useful, thanks Tim

Great timing on the video. I'm using the EOS R with the 100-400 II and the 1.4X III and the spot focusing is perfect on the eyes, but the depth of field was too shallow. I need to remember I can crank up the ISO and step down the f-stop with the newer gear. Low ISO and wide open isn't always the best choice.

Excellent! Wish you would do a similar video on an APS-C sensor camera using a 1.4x extender for DOF.
I use a Canon 80/90D with the Canon 100-400mm II lens and the Canon 1.4x Extender III for wildlife and BIF.
    400mm x 1.6 crop x 1.4x extender = 896mm. At f/10 and 2000-3200 shutter speed, excellent combination with 27 AF points.
Mostly use 9 AF points for BIF and single AF point for busy background shots. Find that more AF points for BIF hunts more and even chooses a cloud or background tree instead of the BIF.

I beleive I covered that in the book I wrote, based mostly on my use of Canon Cameras, the 5D's and the 7D's.

You read my mind with this video! I got questions about your book, does it focus more on DSLR shooter? I’ve been looking forward for a video about AF area since a few days back since the birds photos I took camera out blurry. I love your videos and how knowledgeable you are, thanks!

The closer the subject stop down, the father the subject open up.

Thanks for the detailed account Tim. I'm curious, how did you determine the precise distance the bird was from your sensor (i.e. 186 feet - short eared owl). BTW: All these shots were on your Canon camera? Not the Olympus?

Yes, the software I used to do the calculations won't take newer cameras so I used photos from before. I used a Lightroom plugin ShowFocus Points.

@@GodwitMediaLLC but you would need to know the distance before you take the picture right...so that, on the basis of the camera n lens you are using you know for sure the bird is fully in the depth of field, also considering the aperture used.

Tim, thank you for your many excellent videos - they have helped me often, most recently in setting up my new Mark iii. A little off the track of this current video, but I know you've mentioned Topaz software a time or throughout your video output, I am wondering whether there is a particular argument for Topaz'a Denoise product over its Sharpen software. I am playing with the evaluation download of Sharpen and it seems as though the anti-noise and sharpening algorithms are practically two ways of accomplishing the same. Maybe this just shows what an amateur I am - is there a reason to select one product over the other? Thanks, and looking forward to any further videos about the mechanics of capturing birds in flight.

Good question. I haven't used the Sharpen program but think the sharpening in the Denoise works really well. Maybe something to experiment with on a rainy day.

Wrt the telephoto lens length effect on DOF chart, if I zoom my lens from 600mm to 400mm and captured the image at 100' then cropped it, I would have more details present then if I captured it @ 600mm w/ everything else being equal?

  • @cwetfeet

So... with a M4/3 camera at f4 you would have the same depth of field as a Full Frame at f8?

Check out what Tony Northrup and the fstop guys have to say about that. They go into much more detail. But, in short, I'm happy with the DoF and the boken I'm getting.

    • @SexyLittleOtter

I think that's correct. If you think about what Tim explained in the video, it's not just the aperture that effects the depth of field, but the distance from the bird and the focal length of the lens (shorter lenses = more depth of field and farther distance = more depth of field). With the 300mm m4/3 you can stand the same distance away as a person shooting the 600mm and since it's a shorter lens, you're getting twice the depth of field at f/4 because the lens is twice as short.

Also, I’ve noticed you talk about Canon and Nikon a lot and since I am a Sony shooter, would your book help me?

    • @GodwitMediaLLC
      @GodwitMediaLLC  4 роки тому +2

All the basics and bird photography fundamentals will apply across camera systems. But the menu system examples come from Canon DSLRs because that's what I had when I wrote the book. If you're looking for a Sony bird photography book this won't work for you, but if you can get past the Canon Examples and you want to learn the fundamentals of bird photography this might help. The Amazon Kindle version is only $9.95
