I made two circle skirts out of scrap leather from a furniture maker. I bought an old popcorn shirt recently. My wardrobe is eclectic. I wore skirts in the early 2000s because I like them. Nobody else did that I knew.
I believe it's better to wear what you like because official fashion ends up looking dated so fast.

The internet has truly ruined so much fashion, especially within certain subcultures. I've always loved punk fashion (and politics), and a lot of alternative fashion in general, but even just in my lifetime I've seen it become such a commodity, which is pretty antithetical to a lot of punk culture. I love making and customizing my own clothes and accessories to suit my style, it's very freeing and expressive. Its really cool to see other people figuring out how to make fashion and clothing work for them especially when they're not really considered by mainstream stores or fashion!

This video is so important. I'm not a little person, but I am disabled in ways that makes dressing and staying comfortable really difficult.
As a kid I only had handmedowns that never fit right, and once I made it to middle school I began to feel really self conscious about not being able to comfortably express myself. So, I started sewing. It's helped me feel comfortable leaving my house, feeling like people see ME as I feel and now how I look.
Everyone deserves that comfort, and it infuriates me that the fashion industry just doesn't care if you can't fit the mould.

@@MidnightSimmer I am disabled and sew too. One of my biggest shifts in comfort was learning about fiber contents of fabrics. It's something you can look into well shopping retail.
But you have so much more control when you make it yourself! Good for you, learning a new skill is always an amazing feat.
But I have to ask, has your sewing leaked into crochet knitting or any of the other arts?

I love seeing other disabled folks with creative personal fashions. I’ve been wanting to decorate my cane with fake leaves and flowers but I still get anxious about drawing even more attention to myself.
It feels weird to me that I haven’t taken the plunge to do it. I’ve been thinking about it for at least 2 years and the rest of my personal style is already more defined. I wear almost exclusively 40s-50s inspired dresses and my hair is usually fun colors. I have it half shaved and half bob length both bc it helps me look more gay and bc it helps with sensory issues. I love my cane and the access it gives me to the world but I just never put in the work to make it truly a part of my personal style even though I take it everywhere. I’ve spent years staring at pretty canes and thinking about decorating mine so I feel more confident. Maybe it’s time to take the plunge and go for it 😊.

Omg, personalising living aids is the way to go! Self-adhesive vinyl can make a good base - have used purple and gold on both walking canes / crutches and blind mobility canes. Have also decaled various wheelchairs to various extents. I was lucky enough to have an artist friend who made her Masters thesis all about this. It was the Miss Ability Radio Show back then (2007ish?), and she now runs Knitsonik. I have a couple of cane cosies that she and another friend knitted for me, and it just makes you feel less institutionalised. Go for it! Such as wheelchair users. That wheelchair is part of who they are and leaving it out of a drawing might be insulting to that person.
Not only seeing what dwarfism looks like sometimes but also that there's multiple kinds of. Really drive the point home that we're all different but similarity too. And to be able to see and draw the beauty in that. Plus get a crash course background on each one that would be so valuable.

@@Skunkofthewood I did in-person life drawing for art college, and they did hire a diverse range of models which was invaluable, but people with dwarfism and disability in general were absent. I'd imagine this was due to inaccessibility (being a live model involves a lot of driving from one place to another, each campus not guaranteed to be accessible). We were in a major city so there was a higher probability of finding somebody with dwarfism, but maybe they also felt apprehensive about signing up to be a model? That would be good if the modeling agency went out of their way to assure potential models with dwarfism that they'll be treated respectfully (and then actually follow through)
But yeah, diversity is the bread and butter of life drawing imo, it's so boring to only draw Barbie & Ken dolls lol

I've changed that experience into making my own clothes. Nobody can dictate what you make for yourself when you learn how to do it yourself. If I can learn how to make my own clothes anybody can learn how to hem clothes. Don't be afraid to pick up a new skill to make your dreams come true.

Another great option might be if you have a friend that knows how to sew that needs a little extra money now. You can find out what local rates are and pay your friend instead of giving that money to somebody you don't know. (Be careful make sure your friend knows what they're doing too.)
Most people don't need 10 pairs of black pants. But having 2 or 3 pairs of black pants that are perfectly tailored to you and look really good with everything in your wardrobe? Yes please!

      Shop your wardrobe,
Tailor you what you have, then Find out what you're missing.

Funny enough, it used to be abnormal to have a personal style. Up until the 70's you were mostly expected to keep up with the trends, hence all the decade specific styles.
A lot of subcultures used their clothing to rebel against conformity...only for the fashion companies to conform to them.

Fashion moved a lot slower before. The fashion cycle keeps moving quicker and quicker. At the same time there was still room for uniqueness. It was a *conformed* uniqueness but there are traces. When you look at clothes tailored and unique to that person. Is the norm.
But in the super fashionable circles there was a push to be unique with each outfit. Some variety was there it was just different than it is now.

I think the problem is largely Instagram and similar apps which foster a social media environment that emphasizes spectacle and novelty over personal expression. The "try-on haul" influencer phenomenon pushing wasteful mass-consumerism and disposable culture, over a small collection of carefully curated pieces chosen to express an individual aesthetic.

I feel way more put together with less clothes in my wardrobe than I ever did before. And the bonus is I feel like myself no matter what I pull out of my closet and put on.
Mindful consumption. Do you need 10 $50 sweaters in your wardrobe. No, but I can tell you I paid good money when I found my skunk cardigan. OKAY guide to finding your personal style from the perspective of someone who has been Walter White, Voldemort, a nerdy femme with a bob, a long haired twink, Guy Fieri, and Furiosa: your comfort zone will always hold you back. You have to wear things youve never even considered, and you have to wear things you know you won't like.
If you want to be more expressive try wearing anachronistic or even clashing fashion that represents your interests. I took muted elements from visual key, scene, punk, and goth styles from various eras and smashed it together.

This is one of many reasons why I'm happy that I've mostly thrifted clothes my whole life. You can find so many unique pieces that catch your eye because of what you like, not because of a trend. I still have pieces from like 2014, and I wear whatever I feel like that day. Comfortable, corporate, super feminine, sporty, whatever it is. I've made and altered clothing as well to better suit me. In my late 20s, I'm at the point in my life where I'm just dressing for myself!
I'm grateful that I never feel pressured to follow celebrity fashion. A lot of it seems boring anyway.

When I was younger, we were obsessed with magazines and people wore what was advertised as the "in items". I think social media has exacerbated this by creating "micro trends", and accelerated the turnover (so to speak) of what is trendy. I have a very distinct style and can never find what I like to wear in store. I often have to thrift or have custom made pieces in my taste. I am quite large myself. And I really love "Lady Rebecca fashions" and " pocket full of posies" I believe are their handles yt. Both larger body size creators, both sewing enthusiast. Sewing is easier than you might think.
My key would be get a sewing machine that's good find a good repair shop and pay for it to be serviced. (The local repair shop may have refurbished sewing machines) having a properly working machine without you having to worry about it is going to make it so much easier. Get it serviced yearly and go on UA-cam to find your make and model and how to use it properly. After you learn how to use your sewing machine the right way, then you can follow anybody's tutorial on how to make things. I wish you the best of luck! And remember perfection is not needed.
Pick a person you saw two or three days ago.
Try to remember exactly what they were wearing. Try to remember if there were imperfections in what they were wearing. If you really can't recall something from a few days ago. Other people are going to be similar.
People remember huge things not little things. And you are way more likely to be able to remember how somebody made you feel. If you can leave people feeling good they will always remember you fondly. I've been walking around for nearly two years with a hem that is not even on *two* different skirts. But they're my skirts I made them I'm working on making them more and more even every time I have energy. But in two years nobody dare has said a damn thing about my uneven hems! And if they did I would say, "What are you wearing that you made?" Depending on their reaction I may go on to explain hemming one circle in a skirt is hard. But this skirt has X circles to it. Making it significantly harder to hem. (I have one that's two circles and one that's five circles)
If you insult me I'm going to give you information on why you probably shouldn't have done that. I guess I'm Petty or in the traumatize them back category. 😂

❤ fashion icons ❤❤ I think society is in a phase where people feel very pressured to fit in, hence the rise in conservatism (follow these rules and you can fit in!), and fashion follows societal trends as much as it makes them. People who choose to stand out when there's pressure to fit in are a unique kind of person ❤❤❤
I've always had a style that sits loosely between "hot topic" and "ren faire" and I've gotten clothes from everywhere. Hand me downs from my mom, military salvage from the 40s, last weeks clearance at walmart lol. I've also sewn a lot myself and honestly i really prefer finding something i really like on the racks, get it one size up, then tailor it to work for me.
I used to only worry about being tall and having broad shoulders and hips but now that I've been in a wheelchair for almost a year I'm finally getting out of my "i feel sorry for myself" sweats and pjs pants and back into real clothes that express my style and I'm having to make a lot of small changes like removing buttons/making them nonfunctional and adding elastic for waistbands because **everything** digs into your stomach in a wheelchair lol. Also having to compromise because i love wide leg lants and they're finally everywhere because they're in style- but they get caught in my front wheels all the time.
Still working on that one. So far just amking those alterations little by little has been huge. If you have the finger strength and desterity to sew I totally reccommend trying altering your own clothes- or find a local tailor. They're surprisingly affordable and you're supporting a small businessin yourr community ❤

I wish so much that affordable tailor made stuff was more of a thing like in the past i feel like half the problem with style and accessibility is all the mass produced templates and even if they come in different sizes they don't have different body types in mind.

I think American fashion culture has begun to rot in response to the internet and fast fashion trend cycles. Dress used to be defined by subculture and projected a message and values because of that. Now we’ve reached end-game individualism and everyone is left to figure out how to dress on their own.
Best of luck on your fashion journey. In my experience, going to a thrift store with friends and experimenting and playing can really help. Pick up some basic sewing and it really broadens the possibilities

i love making my own clothes, and i larp a lot, so i make some fairly extravagant costumes for that (if you ever get that part in littleshop, let me know, i'd love to build an audreyII!), and i'm old enough and autistic enough that other peoples opinions about my clothes do not matter to me at all, and i don't care what anyone else is wearing.
I'd say my style is "hippy goblin".
as a teenager in the 90s i worked briefly in catalogues and catwalks, and the irony of the current standardised sizing system is that the "standard" doesn't fit me either, in spite of me LITERALLY having been a 'model' for it. nothing is long enough for a tall thin woman unless you go to a specialist and that's not cheap! men's tops are great, but men's trousers are too roomy at the front and have no space for an ass!
there is a really depressing rabbithole you can go down, looking into anthrometrics and profitable percentiles, but it simply comes down to the people making clothes don't care whose money they get, they just want the most money. they don't want all the peoples money if it means they get slightly less profit overall, and making bespoke items is always less profitable than mass production.
On that note, if you have an item of clothing that fits you really well, it's worth taking it to your tailor to copy, or remake in another fabric, or even just use as a size guide for a completely different garment, since that takes a lot of the work out of pattern drafting, it might lower the price too.

Obsessed with Caity's designs! And everyone else looked so good too !!
As a plus size pre-everything trans man, it's really hard to find my personal style bc I'm yet to be fully comfortable with my body and a lot of brands dont make nice things for my figure so my style is always comfort forward but I think over the years I've found my style through colors, patterns and textures. I really want to start sewing my own clothes at some point though ^^

Do it start sewing it's easier than you think.
Having patterns and colors decided gets you much further than you realize.
And though I am not trans myself... My non-binary partner says it comes in time. It's okay to be uncomfortable now because you will be comfortable soon hopefully. May you find everything you need during your transition including your style! Be safe out there.

Caity is so cool, her style is one I really want to have. Like the seemingly random super different pieces that actually make a cute outfit when put together and the different textures and patterns and cuts, so fun! And feels doable and wearable for normal people, you just have to have a creative and fun mind like her. I totally agree about fashion taking a really hard turn into simply showing off waelth and status. Not that this is new, but it does seem to be more the norm. That's why I like styles like Caity, it reminds me of the grunge/skater looks of the 90s and the streetwear looks of the 00s. Cool and fashionable, but comfy and realistic, really pushing the idea of DIY and altering existing clothing. I really wish we went back to teaching life skills like sewing in school, just not making it a weirdly gendered thing and making it accessible. Being able to do something as simple as take in or out a piece of clothing or repair it can save so much waste and money

I sort of ended up with a style because of my family connection to a large hand-me-down ring. Im pretty sure the clothes passed through a LOT of religious and social groups and would wildly vary in quality and style. We were ready for the weather every year and it was a whole treasure hunt/dressup game when i was a kid. And then as a teenager i learned to actually shop by wandering, touching a colour i liked to see if it felt nice, and trying lots of stuff on.
Where I've landed now is a balance of colour- between foundations (dark brown, navy, moss green, various greys) and flourish (blue/purple jewel tones, pink, high contrast patterns, and rich bright red)- but also a balance of shapes - between structure (often workwear or utility) and flow (lots of scarves but ANYTHING with good movement) - all mixed and matched together.
This comment is major overkill but i hadn't really thought about my personal style and it was fun to discover that i actually had one!

I remember the hand-me-down ring as well. This comment is not Overkill. I love how you're one of the people that realized black doesn't suit them! So few people actually look good in Black. Your style color palette sounds divine!

Ah i love fashion!!! These models and designers are SO skilled!
I too can't fit into normal people's clothes. My shoulder's are too broad for women's tops, my boobs are too large for men's tops. My arms are too long and wide for anything other than t shirts and tanks. My hips are too wide for men's pants, and women's pants dont leave enough room for "me" in the front. My torso is long, and my legs are comparatively short. Ive absolutely never been able to stick to contemporary fashion, so now i just dress like a mix between a street magician and the hunter from left4dead. That or a necromancer from the future.

I wish my time in middle school and high school gave opportunities to learn how to make your own clothing. Some kids would probably thrive showing off their own identity without the fear of how much it’ll cost from a brand. Just buying cloth and thrifting accessories will be worth it in the long run.

    • @Skunkofthewood
      @Skunkofthewood 22 години тому

They used to teach this stuff in school. Well at least to the girls. But I believe you are correct everybody should be able to learn some of these basic things. There should be a whole class on how to mend clothes. That can be an advanced class I have no problem with that. But having access to learn how to use darning needles and a speedweave etcetera. Learning how to identify the best way to fix something. But also learning the other ways to do it in case you don't want to do best case. I would love to see this.

There is a movie that is called a 'Memoir of a Geisha'. This movie is absolutely stunning it's one of those core memories for me kind of.
In the interviews I remember one of the actors talking about how covering up was sexy. It was the peak of skin you weren't supposed to see. He talked about how that was sexy.
Cover up and if you act as if your wrist skin is something we shouldn't see. To me that does become hot. You're choosing who you share something with. You are putting a boundary up and boundaries are sexy. Consent is even more hot.
You can absolutely do sexy but covered.

I think personal style is dead if the person chooses for it to be. If you like and truly appreciate subcultures you’ll dress as such. Not All the time, you don’t need to be full goth all the time for example. I’m alternative and goth and was raised in those subcultures so my style and look will always reflect it. I recommend finding music you like, or beliefs and morals you align with alongside it and see what styles reflect from that subculture the years and find a way to modernize it. I have nice, black and black/red static style turtle necks I wear with black jeans, and doc martens with facial piercings and such. Finding a blend that makes YOU happy is what important. I don’t understand your clothing struggle to a full degree, but in my teens due to my height and proportions it was impossible to find comfortable pants for a long time and they still don’t fit proper I have to use belts. Clothing shouldn’t be a one size fits all and it should be made with the awareness people come in all heights, dimensions, and sizes and be inclusive to it. I’m sorry you struggle so much to find clothing and I hope you find your style!
