Best two mile hurdler I've ever seen. Devastating combination of flat speed and stamina. Plus never seen a horse ping a hurdle under pressure like Fly did. Never once looked like coming down despite some hugely risky jumps to seal races. Injury aside would likely have won 3 champion hurdles and Cheltenham didn't even suit him!
I was there for his third Irish CH, snow coming down sideways off a gale force wind! Never shirked a challenge, would just battle on no matter what was thrown at him. Took on 3 generations of hurdlers and they've all now got his autograph #perfecthurdler freaky how he always measured the last when trapping and eyeballing his challengers! Doubt we'll see the likes again.
Omg Hurricane fly was an unbelievable hurdler. Tough and never got a hurdle wrong even under pressure! A tiny horse but oh my what a hurdler!!

An absolutely amazing video tribute to an amazing horse, pity however about Thousand stars being placed on more than 1 occasion and not getting the win but hurricane fly was truly an amazing horse

How can anybody say he was always workmanlike in his performances? solwhit, go native, dunguib, jezki, our conor, binocular, peddlers cross, rock on Ruby! are just some of the best horses he's beaten! none of them are back numbers and would make you work for the win! beating go native by 10 lengths after being injured and go native had been to Cheltenham and won the supreme? beat binocular twice by 7 lengths! unaccompanied by 7 lengths, Oscar wells by 7 lengths, rock on Ruby by the same margin! when jezki and our conor came along he was 10 years old against young legs to battle how he did is not workmanlike it's guts and will to win! I think our conor could of gone far! rip! longevity wasn't just why he was a good horse. you need to watch rabobank 2011, 2008 future champions hurdle,2009 herald champion novice hurdle.

Tough as nails some hurdler
He was beatable, he had a workmanlike style which didn't captured anyone's imagination like Faugheen does, he lacked a proper standout race that all greats have on their CV, didn't had the versatility of trips he was only run over 2 miles, didn't had the versatility of tracks winning on only 4-5 tracks in his entire career HOWEVER what he had was longevity which in NH is appreciated and doing that at 11yo was simply outstanding.
It'll take a long time to see a horse with his will to win and by being champion hurdler 2 times he earned a high place in hurdling history, even more considering he captured a record 22 G1s in that time.
I'm sure the owner had a hard time to call it a day but falling to beat Jezki over 3 miles and the 2 miles scene being overshadowed by Faugheen, it was probably the right call and hope he has a great retirement.
+makoceans Well said! And It was definitely the right call.. We can't expect him to go toe to toe with horses just as good as he was back in his prime.. and last year had the feeling of a "bonus year" for him anyway.. and while we don't want to undermine his heart and what he truly has left to give, it's best he bows out on top, in one piece, and with a record I doubt even Faugheen will get close to (Talent wise, he's at least on par, but that longevity is rare as rocking horse sh*t and we may not see his likes for a long long time...)
Couldn't disagree more. In his younger days Fly used to come alongside other horses coming to last still on the bridle, laughing at them. Then it was a question of how much he'd find which 9 times out of 10 the answer was just about enough. If that doesn't capture attention then I don't know what does. Faugheen on the other hand is a front runner who likes to run the finish out of his rivals, hardly a storytellers dream.
he won over 2m4f at fairyhouse and france . beat solwhit over 2m4f so I wouldn't say he wasn't versatile because solwhit went on to win a world hurdle. best hurdler I have ever seen. never made a mistake at a hurdle

Honeysuckle should be grateful that Hurricane Fly came a decade earlier. Even the horses he beat like Solwhit, Jetski, Our Conor, A Thousand Stars may well av been 2 much 4 honeysuckle. Not her fault but we live in times we’re all top horses go chasing. Funny really the supreme novices at Cheltenham was traditionally the race 2 the find the next crop of Champion hurdlers. Now it’s just a feeder 4 the ankle
