I gotta give you props for actually playing the piano. You're still such an underappreciated channel and I can't wait for you to get to 100,000 subs or more!
There's 2 possible reasons for that 1°: You remembered Rosalina's backstory 2°: You remembered the scene after defeating Bowser I'll put things simple, Super Mario Galaxy is one of the most emotive games ever made and a lot of those emotional scenes in that game had that particular theme. PS: I'M NOT CRYING, I'M SWEATING THROUGH MY EYES.
@@N12015 I think there's a bit more to it than just the backstory aspects. Though those two certainly help. There's something about Luma's Theme in particular that... At least from my listening of it, really brings back memories of childhood, and not just because this game was part of my childhood. This song really gives me that sense of an adult (or perhaps in Rosalina's Case, an omnipotent space-deity) looking back upon their life and especially their childhood with a mix of Nostalgia and Sadness for something that's long-gone. It really acts as a perfect theme for Rosalina and the Lumas because of that. Rosalina is both a Daughter and a Mother. 1: If we take the theories as true, she had to deal with her mother's death at a young age, which followed shortly by her accidentally getting herself lost in space. So she still has to deal with someone who likely feels very lost in the world as a child... Some may argue having her innocence stolen in the process. 2: Yet Rosalina swiftly ends up becoming a mother figure to all of the Lumas she's adopted. Which only makes it more painful when the only way to keep the world from imploding in on itself is for all of the lumas to die. In both uses of the Luma Theme, we're shown many aspects of childhood, yet it all comes through a wistful sort of pain for long-lost trauma.
Since someone's gonna comment it, here's the timecode for the song itself: 5:39 You’re free to jump there if you really want, but I’d encourage listening to the story behind it first. Ultimately, you’re the boss, though!
I absolutely agree that Luma's theme is among the best, but whenever I play it, I always include the sad story portion. It just doesn't feel complete without one or the other to me.
Galaxy was a remarkable game. The Wii is really where the New Super Mario Bros. series really started to stagnate the brand, and Sunshine was successful, but not quite as beloved as 64. It was the right time for a new game, and Galaxy was a graceful reinvention of the traditional 3D Mario format - the planetary gravity shaping a slower, more accessible movement style. Looking back at the Sonic franchise tripping over their own two feet on reinventions every few years, you really have to respect Nintendo's design prowess. The music was great. The orchestral fare really gave outer space a grandiose feel. Williams-esque. It also is, in my opinion, the loneliest Mario. Rosalina's Storybook is some heavy stuff, and it's a bit of a shame that that depth of character and story never really came back to the franchise. Once you understand what the storybook is hinting at with the Gateway Galaxy, in particular, it's quite a gut-punch to return to that area. There's quite a lot of content in Galaxy that's about distant guardianship, and how space is simultaneously beautiful, lonely, empty, and incredibly primal and chaotic. Anyway, my favorite songs from the game are Gusty Garden Galaxy, To the Gateway, and the Comet Observatory. Galaxy is a great work of art.
This is brilliant write up! I totally agree with everything you said - Nintendo needed some kind of Mario shake up, and Galaxy provided that brilliantly (+ had a brilliant story, soundtrack and visuals to boot!) Now, I definitely have a strong soft spot for Odyssey, considering it was my first 3d Mario game, but its story is nowhere near as touching and beautiful as Galaxy's.

In my eyes Mario galaxy has always stuck out from the rest of series because there was something really sombre, beautiful and elegant to the game's whole vibe that you typically wouldn't find in a Mario game. I think it's music was a crucial part of this distinctly special feeling. Thank you for making this video, I'm glad that now I can appreciate this game's amazing music even more. Personally, Space Junk galaxy is my favorite track in the game.

Thomas, please keep making content. You're excellent at piano, have a pretty relaxing voice, and you're good at distributing information with a very nice scrapbook/history-ish editing style. Fits the vids perfectly. Can't wait to see you get to 100k+! Cheers
Lumas theme is the only music I liked out of any Mario soundtrack because it was peaceful and it reminds me of my childhood so even right now I’m crying to this day of how beautiful it was🤧
Similarly, I think the track called "To the Gateway", or "The Bunnies" (unsure which is the correct name) is beautiful and understated. I think it also lands well because you only hear it once in a playthrough.
Oh my god, hearing you play it was beautiful. I almost geared up of how nostalgia it was. Recently I replayed the game and finished it (for the first time since I was younger actually lol). Hearing that song play as I listened to the final chapters of Rosalina’s storybook, made me remember my experience of the game. Thank you for making this video.
God tier cover of lumas theme, I wasn't expecting a history lesson with good editing but in my soul it's what I wanted all along, you just got a subscribe.
This game's soundtrack literally makes me wanna cry. It's one of the most memorable games I've played and still enjoy playing to this day. Unfortunately, my Wii has officially died so I can no longer play the sequel. But, I'm so glad that the Nintendo Switch now has at least the first one available. Along with Mario Sunshine and Mario 64 of course!
I really hate myself so much for revisiting what was once my favorite game and just finding it "good" now. I wish i enjoyed platformers as much as i used to...
But that’s completely fine. Tastes change and at least you can look back fondly of the game and still appreciate it but may be in a different way then you used to before.
To be honest I 100% agree with the luma’s theme being the most beautiful, no amount of music has ever been able to bring me to tears but this one from but nostalgia and bliss
I think that's because it's kind of standard Mario stuff at that point. It's the silly classic MIDI-styled music you'd expect from a Mario game. They're not bad, they're just... typical.
Okay, when I started the video I was thinking It had to be Rosalina's Observatory, or The Luma Theme. I was correct with the Luma Theme. Props to you playing the keyboard, you play very well, the only thing I can play is für elise. Space Fantasy is by far my favorite song from any Mario game.
This is the theme that represents the difference between Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. While the sequel has more polish and better gameplay, the first is infused with so much heart and soul.
THIS!
Well, mostly yes, luckily galaxy 2 did have some very atmospheric galaxies as well

Best theme of both galaxy and galaxy 2 in my opinion, also one of the best galaxies at the same time.
Also “Sad Girl”! One of my favorite tracks from the game and I love how it goes with this song!
Your vids have been consistently recommended to me this last week and I’m glad I finally clicked one. Great, informative stuff, props on the beautiful piano playing as well
Thomas, please keep making content. You're excellent at piano, have a pretty relaxing voice, and you're good at distributing information with a very nice scrapbook/history-ish editing style. Fits the vids perfectly. Can't wait to see you get to 100k+! Cheers
Lumas theme is the only music I liked out of any Mario soundtrack because it was peaceful and it reminds me of my childhood so even right now I’m crying to this day of how beautiful it was🤧
dangit, Luma's theme shouldn't always make me cry, but it does. I weep like a friggin baby every time I hear it.
Bravo, you played that well.
Similarly, I think the track called "To the Gateway", or "The Bunnies" (unsure which is the correct name) is beautiful and understated. I think it also lands well because you only hear it once in a playthrough.
You actually hear it again when you get a star from one of the Hungry Luma galaxies.
Gives me such a hard nostalgia trip that I’m tearing up
Thank you for playing this for me, it brought me back to my childhood
"I want to go home! I want to go home right now!"
You'll remember how the music goes at this part of the story.... Still gives me shivers
I was hoping for this song and it's what I got.
Thank you tremendously.
God tier cover of lumas theme, I wasn't expecting a history lesson with good editing but in my soul it's what I wanted all along, you just got a subscribe.
After hearing this song again after so many years it sent goosebumps of joy through my spine

Now, you can appreciate it for the depths of the storyline, such plot depth was never seen in a Mario main title and wasn't seen again.
I'm tearing up here. Not only a beautiful piece of music which was deftly played but also a fantastically done video with great setup.
The Luma theme was the first thing that came to my mind when you crossed off Gusty Gardens ^-^
I think the star festival is really high up there because it sounds both emotional and really upbeat at the same time
Wow!! You're such an amazing piano player!!
Aw, thank you!
To be honest I 100% agree with the luma’s theme being the most beautiful, no amount of music has ever been able to bring me to tears but this one from but nostalgia and bliss
all mario music is so nostalgic on top of it being such a great series i really wish that Nintendo also made songs for more than video games
You are always so kind Thomas Game Docs
why does no one talk about his synthesizer music like the shadow clone and underground remix and smb3 athletic music remix! no one talks aboutit
I think that's because it's kind of standard Mario stuff at that point. It's the silly classic MIDI-styled music you'd expect from a Mario game. They're not bad, they're just... typical.
Oh my gosh!! Why am i crying??? It's so beautiful.
Okay, when I started the video I was thinking It had to be Rosalina's Observatory, or The Luma Theme. I was correct with the Luma Theme. Props to you playing the keyboard, you play very well, the only thing I can play is für elise.
Edit: I can play other songs with one hand, but für elise, and little bit of Rosalina's Observatory is what I can play with two. Again, you play very well and have real cool nintendo videos with an amazing editing style. You totally need more subs!
Thats a brilliant composition and a wonderful play through of it. You did it justice man and was able to evoke the feeling in the notes.
The Most Beautiful Mario Song Is The Hotel Mario Theme
That's not TOO far fetched actually, it's an arrangement of a track from the movie Little Women, composed by Max Steiner
@@Plasmariel CDI >>>>>>>>> sh!tty switch
hi thanks for making me cry.
legit you played the song so well, and that one in particular always happens to make me tear up. instead of just simply tearing up i actually started crying haha.
anways, great video. keep up the good work!
Luma's Theme always makes me cry. I'm actually crying as I type this! 😭😭😭
Grow a pair
Uno reverse bro why do this? Why be rude.. it’s really not cool if he cried he cried.
@@thereisnopandemic A real man is unafraid to express emotion.
THAT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL at the end omg you play that song really well
Is there anywhere to listen to the original "cute" theme that he composed? I'm curious to hear it!
I believe that was good egg galaxy what still got accepted not sure tho
@@chadihamidi3572 No, Good Egg Galaxy was the one that Koji Kondo composed
@@adiazrue5776 yeah but got first rejected for being too cutr
@@chadihamidi3572 No seriously it's not Good Egg Galaxy lmao. The "cute" theme wasn't used
@@chadihamidi3572 Not to be rude but personally Good Egg Galaxy doesn't seem cute, in fact, as Thomas stated, it was the one that did get exceptes
Mario galaxy is my opinion the best Mario game ever made with awesome soundtrack and challenging gameplay with a wonderful story unlike “the princess is in another castle”. The game itself is very nostalgic, it’s already been 14 yrs old
When the violins come in on “the wish” just wow
How a 2007 game could bring sadness and happiness is crazy....i will never forget it
Woah you play the piano so well
Haha, thanks!
We all grew up with Mario galaxy. Oh how beautiful those times where.
1:32 Your emulator is always off in the sound department. When you play back the music from older games there's always a channel missing. In this instance, it's the lead instrument that plays main melody.
So. Many. Memories of this music. And you're spot on. That storybook theme is teary good!!!!
I can't honestly say Luma's Theme is my favorite piece of Mario music.... But I honestly have to say that yeah; it's probably the most "beautiful" of the pieces.
That's true, some of the more energetic songs are great too! I love that one single series has both songs like Bo-Bomb Battlefield, as well as Luma's Theme. I love the variety!
@@ThomasGameDocs Agreed :) My personal favorites are usually the more jazzy pieces, but that's perhaps because of my personal musical tastes.
Though a not jazzy but upbeat tune I especially love from Galaxy 2 is Puzzle Plank; one I don't hear too much about typically.
I just relistened to Puzzle Plank and now I have it stuck in my head, haha! Oh, and if we're talking jazzy, I absolutely adore the Staff Roll song from Mario 3d World! Regardless of your personal feeling towards the game, it had a brilliantly jazzy soundtrack!
@@ThomasGameDocs hahaha... Your welcome ;)
Also, the 3D World Staff Credits were incredible; my favorite tune from a game with probably my favorite Mario soundtrack. The game as a whole is rather controversial- I love it, definitely in my top 3 Mario games, but many found it underwhelming- but I haven't heard anyone complain about the soundtrack on all my time on the net. :)
First thing I heard the song you played so many memories of playing Galaxy when I was a kid flooded back. Really beautiful piece
I’m still confused in the fact that you’re only one year older than me but you’re work so good
Haha, thank you so much! I definitely have weaknesses though (you wouldn't wanna see my drawings!)
Thomas Game Docs It is definitely impossible that your drawings are worse than mine. The hardest thing I can draw is an amputated stick man lol
This video was so good, I'm liking and subscribing without watching the rest of your stuff. Fantastic.
I play the super Mario galaxy soundtrack at work and everyone loves it
i always thought that it was the most beautiful soundtrack ever since i was 6 years old playing the game, the ending with the lumas energy hit just as harder when that music played. Amazing game man, itll stick with me to the day i die.
i prefer the credits theme from mario 64
All credits themes from mairo games are beautiful, even the super mario land one
@@gamermapper correction all the music
but the m64 got that sweet spot
@@weshuiz1325 same
that one was probably the most cinematic feeling one to close out the game
@@gamermapper the super mario land credit music is infamous for being an amazing peice of music tho.
Thank you for uploading this, it really cheered me up this morning.
Everyone's saying space junk Galaxy theme is underrated, but I think that buoy base Galaxy is underrated
Thank you man, for giving me this idea to use this music. Thank you with all my heart. Great video!
If my feelings towards the mario series was song it would be Lumas theme!
You my friend are a fantastic piano player, I genuinely got chills from these piano renditions of Mario music.
did you know that smg 1 and 2's game covers have easter eggs?
the sparkly letters on smg 1 say U R MR GAY
and the letters on smg2 say YA I AM R U backwards
LMAO this is true :D
But hey! That just a theory, A GAME THEORY!
@@imthebanana1055 *gay theory
This is such a unique and superb informative video. Loved every second
I disagree, space junk galaxy is the best theme of all time from SMG in my opinion.
@@LeithDaBeef of course, I agree, but space junk galaxy is my personal favourite from the soundtrack as a whole
The best in terms on beautiful sounding, or just your favourite?
@@Srcsqwrn both
This is awesome! I love your accent and as a musician myself, your piano skills are amazing!
Super mario galaxy’s soundtrack is the best and id gladly argue with anyone this point
Paper Mario (the first one) has a better soundtrack. As does its sequel and Super Mario 3D Land
Anon they are good sound tracks not gonna lie, but i can close my eyes and listen to the super mario galaxy soundtrack and its relaxing, with the other soundtracks i get more of an energized feeling.
@@zackblaster825 Totally fair enough, they both definitely provide something different and at the end of the day it's all subjective. Mario music overall is just awesome
@@Ravel327 agreed
5:54 this soug all ways makes me cry because when I was like 4 I first beat Mario galaxy and the ending was the most sad thing Iv ever seen then and I still cry when I hear the song
whats going on with your hands in the intro lol
He could be shy or something shhh
Not only was the luma's theme such a beautiful song, but it also captured the story and the sadness behind it
is this just a subtle way to flex being able to play piano? 😂 jk it's great nonetheless
I am so glad one of your videos found their way into my recommended.
this brings back so much nostalgia omg. my Wii came with the galaxy soundtrack CD (that still works to this day) and i used to listen to it all the time
something about luma's theme, at least at the beginning gives me literal goosebumps. It's a quiet exhale away from the action and warmhearted activity mario is. Thanks for reminding me of that masterpiece.
Hey Thomas, whatever you're going through, I hope it gets resolved soon! keep pushing through man, and get some sleep
Thought for sure it was gonna be Space Junk Road, but Luma's theme is also incredibly beautiful and powerful. Your playing was beautiful as well! And that was a wonderful melancholy rendition of Gusty Garden's theme, too.
